One thing that is noteworthy here that she relied on colonial theory to prove Aryans were foreign but yet again and again said that things like oral tradition and mahmud ghazni theories were the works of colonial bosses.

Ms Thapar is a doctrinaire of the West propounded AIT. Eloquent and erudite sounding Western interpretations of Indian History since colonial times, do not render accurate a specious argument. After admitting that archaeologists differ in the way they excavate sites and interpret artifacts, one must make allowance for studies and historical analyses that are contrary to popular accepted opinions of influential historians. It is unfair to brush all new theories as Hindutva propaganda.

Past does not have to appease your theories or be palliative to our current problems. Past is dead and gone and historians should strive to hold themselves to a scientific merit, than an interpretive merit alone.

While there are many areas where I differ with Romila Thapar's interpretations of historical events, there is ONE CLEAR POINT about Indian History in general (except for the Indus Valley Civilization that is still being literally unearthed) that seems valid. And, that point is: Our current narratives of Indian History are entirely based on British and Upper Caste Hindu views of India.
    One may ask, "How so?"
When the British established themselves as our colonial masters, the Hindu upper caste sucked up to them for one simple reason. Enemy (the British) of their enemy (the Muslim rulers) was their (upper caste Hindu's) friend. For the British this was a big boon to establish their lordship over our vast land and population. (There are details of why Muslims shunned away from British rulers because for them it was a major loss when the British arrived and displaced the Muslim rulers.)
The British gathered historical anecdotes from this Hindu upper caste and created a colonial narrative that painted India as a land of snake charmers and spiritualism. The upper caste Hindu found solace in this interpretation because they could, at least, claim that India was superior in one area (religion / spiritualism). These two forces played into each other's hands and they served each other very well.
As a result of this collusion of interest between British colonial masters and the Hindu upper caste real India was forgotten and waylaid.
What was lost in the process was the progress that Indian mathematics, science and technology had made prior to British colonialism. Huge monuments - of which there were galore (Red Fort, Qutab Minar, Taj Mahal, Ajanta caves, Surya Mandir at Konarak, etc) - Indian steel sold in Europe as Damask steel, were not products of spiritualism or snake charming. They were solidly rooted in Indian science and technology, which was at par with British science and technology on the eve of the famous 1757 battle of Plassey (Palashi in Bengali). After that watershed event British economy as well as British science and technology took off - to be sure, riding on the back of wealth moved by East India Company from India to Britain.

At 14:38 she says 'historians don't cause controversies' and later she says 'historians only give an alternative explanation.' An alternative explanation is a cause for controversy, isn't it? Finally at 18:45 about the Ram Temple the question if there was a temple before the Babri mosque? The archaeology department dug out a structure beneath the mosque, isn't it the job of the historians to conclude what this structure was? Was it a huge temple or something else. The structure was an ancient structure but it was destroyed recently and on top of it was built a mosque? If historians like this Romila can't solve a recent such a recent event, how will she throw light on the ancient Aryan theory?

history written at the time of a ruler will be written with the full account of the good, depicted through out his life time. this will be recorded and will be well preserved as a needed, by his courtiers or else historians life will be short.this will be our future, firm evidence available. when rani padmini of Rjastan was to be abducted by the mughal king to be taken to his harem, a small incident is mentioned about the johar committed by the females of the palace, by meer khusrow that too in a poetical style or else fearing the wrath of his ruler.. the story remains mainly in the local folklore of Rajastan only, naturally they have no place in history but only in the village ballads sung by them.looks like fiction to a historian, will remain in the confinement of a village only, with no impotence about the valour shown by the the population of the time. looks like historically dead people should come alive and give evidence to their life lived. historians will need mathematical proof to their work while most of it is, surface dug on assumptions and circumstantial imagination. what to be included will depend upon the need of the time, suiting their positions. then why not mention all possibilities.

Guys are making a big mistake. There was never a country called Inida. The Vedic religion was practiced mostly in what we now call Pakistan, Afganistan, central Asia, Iran and probably in latter times in North western India.
The above is basically evident from linguistic and genetic patterns.
Rest of what we now call India consists of various populations who adopted to this religion at varying degrees with passage of time.
If anybody wants to dispute this, they have to say why the poets of Rig Vedam did not mention Kaveri or Krishna. They did not know "India" and that is the reason.

That is why I used the word if. Glad to know that your criticisms do not stem from a nationalistic point of view. Victor Sarianidi's findings in Turkmenistan also point towards the migration theory although I am aware of the criticisms BB lal has made on Sarianidi's claims. One sees the aryans as a linguistic group rather than a race because the Rig Vedic sanskrit(1500 BCE) language has a very close resemblance with the Indo-Eurpoean family tree.

But instead, she goes to the British library to copy paste Indian history written by Brits. She is not even fit to be my college librarian.

Romila Thapar is a anti-hindu historian who denigrates ancient India ,but panders to the muslim rule in the middle ages. She is the worst kind of "historian",so-called. I have read the Rig Veda and nowhere in those 11,000 hymns authored by more than 300 poets ever mention any place other than the land of seven rivers ,which is northern , western India and Eastern Pakistan. Are you accusing those poets of some kind of amnesia about their past? Or are you implying that all of them are liars ? The likes of Romila Thapar are the worst distorters of history. She is a stooge of muslims and the western powers. Her scholarship is dubious.

While commenting on her works about the question of Ghazni invading India, she suggests that she has adhered to the best practices that a historian should do by interpretation of diverse sources.
On the question of Ram Mandir, she suggests that interpretations of archaeological finds could be inconclusive and misleading.
Is she trying to put across that she has accomplished her findings with utmost probity and professionalism that the archaeologists are not capable of?

Thapar has condoned the aryan invasion theory and she has been taking this position in all her talks. You should provide a reference to show specifically when she has supported the invasion theory. I think the issue is between migration and whether the aryans were indigenous. Mainstream linguists agree tht the evidence points towards migration specifically due to the similarities of latin and greek with sanskrit, the former being a kind of cousins and not a derivative.

    • @viswaghosh1

Part of the reason being, neither do we have a "present" to boast of nor a "future" that appears very golden. Also, these backward-facing forces who try to glorify the "past" on false grounds are the folks who have always lived off others' labors. They are not the hard working, toiling masses who are capable of building India from ground up.
I must admit that I too think of many glorious things in our past - Indus Valley Civilization being one of them, which has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE Vedic and Brahmanical traditions. My focus is entirely on our scientific, mathematical, and technological achievements (not the Modi-type claims which explains Ganesha as a creation of vedic plastic surgery (sic!)) and also recognize the fact that our scientists from the first millennia onward were HOUNDED by the brahmanical religious traditions, which started more than a 1000 year before Giordano Bruno was burnt at the stakes by the Church, while Copernicus and Galileo were made to recant their cosmological theories.
In a similar manner, our scientists and mathematicians - such as, Brahma Gupta (6th ~ 7th century AD) and Varahamihira (6th century AD) - were forced to first pay obeissance to the Rahu-Ketu nonsense before they carefully and guardedly explained lunar and solar eclipses in the correct scientific manner.
