The desk in the entrance of the building is not in use anymore. There used to be a guy sitting there in order to allow guests entering the building. He also had other responsibilities, like cleaning the common areas, taking care of the elevator etc... Nowadays this has been replaced by cleaning agents and other companies. You can only find these kind of desks in very old buildings...

Koukaki is actually one of the best areas to stay when you visit Athens, if not the best. It's pretty quiet, really close to the centre of Athens, affordable and actually a really cool area in general. It has hippy vibes and a lot of young people go there to have a drink or eat brunch under the Acropolis. Good choice Mark!

Compared to many European houses/ apartments, this is still pretty modern. The lift may be old, but if it's maintained properly, no harm. Water pressure is a general problem in many southern European countries...

    • @Y4nn1z

The water pressure IS NOT A GENERAL PROBLEM in the Athens. Because it depends from the area. For example, Koukaki has this problem in some buildings up to 5 floor but in the area close to Center (under Polytexneio), the water it's ok.

    •  6 лет назад

Yeah, I live in Czech Republic and a couple of friends I can think of at the moment have lifts like this one. And yeah, this apartment is a good apartment for Europe. He got flat-out robbed for 80 bucks a night though, but it's not a bad place.

0:53 That desk used to be where the man in charge of guarding the entrance would spent his day. His main job was to sit there and watch who comes and goes apart from the residents, lock the front door at night and unlock it in the morning. We no longer have doormen because each appartment has its own security system. Nowdays you can spot them only in movies of the 50s, so you can imagine how old the building must be!

For example, Koukaki has this problem in some buildings over the 5 floor but in the area close to Center (under Polytexneio), the water it's ok and also the apartments rent from €150-250/Month or €25-40/Night (basic furnished)!!!
Koukaki, Pagrati, Kolonaki, even Syntagma, are not so close to Acropolis than Omonia, Monastiraki, Thesio, Plaka, etc but it is difficult to find free apartments to rent!!!
One or two Metro stations from Acropolis, (e.g, Platia Vathis, Larissis Station, Exarchia, etc), you can find apartments with very low prices than €70/per night because are thieves, unless the apartment is fully furnished!!!
*(Area Polytexneio, from Streets Patision, 3rds Septembriou, Acharnon, Alkiviadou, etc, you can find EXACTLY THE SAME buildings/apartments and from balconies you can have a PANORAMIC VIEW of ACROPOLIS. And the nights with all of these lights, makes whole atmosphere MAGIC!!! The Eiffel Tower, is nothing in front of imposing golden lights of the ancient Acropolis!)

Hey Mark, this is actually a typical apartment building from the real estate boom of the 60's and 70's. Most of these buildings were built during that era on top of older, more traditional small houses, in order to compensate for the massive move of people from the more rural places to the urban areas. So it is a typical appartment building built between 1965 and the late '70s

    1. I can´t understand your surprises about the elevator. That was the very normal elevator in the 70-80´s.
Only in the last 15 y. changed the specifications. And there are still some older with wooden walls. As in a movie from 30´s
    2. The toilets are same good as yours (viewers). The forbiddance is to protect them. Its just another practice/custom.
Did you see guys (viewers) the marbles ? This is Dionyssos marble (very white/ no grey shadows AT ALL) 3-4cm thick, which cost now because of the crisis more 130,- eur/m2 3cm thick in the quarry !!! Before > 250-300 eur/m2. Easily 500eur/m2 3cm.
Still the production cannot sutisfy the demand. I bought marble before 6 mounths 3cm for 100eur/m2+ taxes, not perfect. This appartement was on the top in its youth : 70´s. (prices allways+taxes)

If someone want a new elevator for his vacation must go to America or Dubai , not in Greece. This is a real and authentic Athens apartment to live like a local, in Rome we have elevators from before 2ww in a lot of central buildings and I like them very much, someone ask you a coin for working, but italians have a system not to pay. They do a great job, this is important. As Italian may be I would tell something about the bathroom (😳no bidet!!!) , but the balcony is really oversize and relaxing and forget the bathroom with a good metrio frappè

@@lindazahm4599 i would recommend checking on airbnb 1 month in advance, for 30-50€ per night there are decent places! Also if the location is bit a problem you can stay anywhere as far as it was metro line near , or for me the best location is . Kalithea, Tauros, koukaki, 3 stops from the city center

I understand about being quiet around your kid but don't be too quiet. They have to "learn" to sleep when it's a bit noisy. Otherwise you'll be tiptoeing around your house when Mica gets older too. Thanks for another great video. I always enjoy them!

If in Athens or Greece in summer, make sure you have air conditioning otherwise you will be sweating at night! I didn’t have A/C in Barcelona and it was brutal to sleep!

Typical 1960s apartment building, built during the building boom that lasted between the mid 50s to mid 70s. Although the intentions were good (to replace outdated and inadequate housing) it was done without any urban planning or conservation in mind, which meant that neoclassical masterpieces were demolished, not enough open public spaces, parking or urban landscaping. The look of every city is a testament of its history. BTW, love your videos Mark!

Old? Only to someone as young as you. Looks like it was built in the 1960's or 1950's at the earliest. In Greece i suspect old is much older than this.

I can probably tell you the background of those front desks found in 1970's and earlier European apartment buildings. They have to do with airline or travel industry leased buildings for use by their foreign female staff members who are being chaparoned and kept under a curfew at night and under strict no after hours visitor rules.

Consider that airbnb is the main reason we, greek Athens locals, can't find a place to live. It's becoming insane to rent a proper house to stay and try to survive in reasonable price. Add the existent economical crisis and you can imagine the struggle.

hey mark, the water pressure is low probably pecause the owner set up the pressure like this to make sure you use less water, that way he will pay less water bill. You can readjust the pressure of course by yourself

When I was in Athens I was told that the reason you can't throw toilet paper down the toilet was because of the narrow diameter of the pipes, not the low water pressure.
Though in my second hotel it was ok to put toilet paper down the toilet, so I guess they had bigger pipes than in my first hotel. That was a relief, because putting the used TP in the bin is kinda gross.

Mark, the fact that your living room has different flooring shows simply that in the past this big living room was actually 2 separate rooms. The area is good but the flat is old and you payed waaay to much money for this old house. Actually with 300 euros you can pay a month's rent for a better apartment in athens
