I enjoyed watching your video 😊 I came to find a recipe to make for my 85 year old dad, who has a keto diet (no sugar). I added no sugar but reduced my tomatoes further which made it sweet. Dad is enjoying the ketchup 😊 Thanks & much 💙 from Australia 🌏
I just learned to make ketchup. My hubs is diabetic so no sugar, no thickener. It is very thick and flavorful. So glad! no more additives in his ketchup. He is one that likes a little food with his ketchup
Oh may goodness it's so nice of you to be teaching us novices how to save the goodness of mother nature. WASTE NOT WANT NOT. Nothing goes to waste. YOUR GRACE AND GOD SENT. SO MUCHLY APPRECIATE THANK YOU!!!!😁😁😁😁
I made home-made ketchup many years ago when we first got married (46 years ago!). The recipe is called "Blender Ketchup". You've inspired me to dig out the recipe and try it again. 🍅🍅🍅 BTW, Mom taught me do "open-kettle" canning and I've done a lot of it.
I know this video is a year old and I am so grateful for your channel and your willingness to share your recipes! Can I suggest that when you write your recipes for us that you put your logo as a header? I like to print recipes out and keep them in a binder and I especially like to know where or who created it for me to use. Thank you, Ruthanne, for this channel.
RuthAnn you are so inspiring and a great teacher. The more I watch you the more videos I want to watch. Also you look so much like my cousin I had to look twice. Hope y’all have a great weekend. God’s Blessings and Peace to you all. 🌻 🍂🍁
GOD is indeed very good. I love learning a more traditional way of doing things, so I come to your channel. Thank you for sharing, I love your videos so much, and you.
Thanki you for sharing this open kettle method and your ketchup recipe. This method is definitely not something they teach anymore, but my mom used to do this with her hot pepper jelly. Thanks for such a thorough explanation.
Ketchup is a perfect example of open-kettle canning. We used to cover with towels and set the jars upside down after a few hours. Many Italians still use the open-kettle method for pasta sauce, salsas and bruschetta.
My mom-in-luv, showed me to use hot water about an inch or so in any type of pan with higher sides, and as we put the hot foods inside the containers, it would help to also seal the jars. So much easier. This looks even easier, Thk you. Also, here in Canada, Ketchup is very expensive…$5.99/bottle with inflation, but before even $3.98-$4.99. So again, Thk u!!!❤
I'm making this recipe this week...years ago I went with ex to one of his hauls to a ketchup plant. You should have seen all the flies and maggots on the tomatoes!! I haven't ate it since but sure do miss it!
I absolutely love your videos ! How old was Kendrick when yall adopted him ! He absolutely loves your cooking ❤as does all your family so comforting and informative
My grandfather also did open kettle canning but his method involved boiling the jars and lids so that they were also hot. He would take the hot jars and fill them with the hot food before putting the hot lids on top and turning the jars upside down. Rarely he would end up with a jar here or there that didn’t seal and he would either use that jar mediately or if there were a lot of them empty it back into the container that he was cooking in, bring it back up to a boil, and then wash and re-boil the jars and lids. Almost never did he have any failures after a second attempt to can them.
Your grandfathers method is what I was taught. Ive had a couple of jars that might not seal, I would use it or redo it. Ive never made ketchup because my husband and I dont care for it! I may try a small run for the grandkids when they come visit.
@balthizarlucienclan. Hi. The newer lids shouldn't be boiled as they're not made the same as they used to be ( they're using cheaper materials & sealing part isn't as great as it was - expect some jars to NOT seal - put those in fridge to use 1st). Wash & dry them & keep in hot water - not boiling
How did your family like this new recipe for ketchup? I am a fan of store bought as well and haven’t found a recipe that comes close as of yet…Thanks for sharing all the canning tips! I have learned a lot from watching you. I have been on this canning journey for two decades and have had my share of youtube time trying to find ways to preserve the food I grow…Last year I followed your directions and dry canned potatoes and we like those. This year I plan to make my pickles like you suggested so they stay crunchy.
Thank you for your hard work. Love the idea of making my own ketchup! My husband is diabetic and I have been buying special no sugar ketchup for him (very expensive). But now I can make up two batches (one reg for me and one no sugar for him). I'll let you know how it turns out. I always write your name at the top of the recipe so I know where it came from.
I've wanted to make ketchup but have always been afraid no one would like it and then that would have been a waste of my tomatoes and time. I'm curious to see what your kids think when you pop open a jar. Thank you for sharing your recipe. Blessings to you and the family!
I remember my Grandma’s homemade ketchup. It’s been a long time, but I loved the sweet, cinnamon taste. One day I will make some. Great video! I think the pigs need to learn some table manners, though. 😂
I love your apron, super cute. Thanks for showing your method for ketchup. I would like to try that someday. I am growing lots of roma tomatoes this year for sauce.
Today my roaster is filled with tomato sauce that is going to be canned up as spaghetti sauce. Last of my ripe tomatoes! Then on to the green tomatoes for salsa verde and green enchilada sauce.
Question I don't want or have clear gel. Can I just use a regular cornstarch slurry to thicken it, or can I just leave it on the heat longer to reduce it to thicken it.
What beautiful shelves of jars ! You are so inspiring with your videos. My mom made sauerkraut and green Beans all the time! Your name is German last name !
I have just discovered your channel in the last week or so and have been binge watching you. I love watching you. I can see God working through you. May he continue to bless you and everyone watching. There is another homesteading channel that has a copycat recipe for the ketchup you buy. From what I understand it’s spot on. Not sure how you would feel about sharing the link for them in the comments. If you would like a link let me know
I love your video’s! They have inspired me to make more from scratch, and I love that I have control of what goes into my food. Just a question, clear gel isn’t available in Australia. Is there a way to make it without?
Other reasons to make your own ketchup: better variety of tomatoes, organic (not sprayed with chemicals) ingredients, no high fructose corn syrup, etc! My husband would say it’s not worth my time to make it when it’s so cheap at the store. But he doesn’t care as much about the quality & health values of his food as I do.
I’m still trying to get through all your videos. lol. I made ketchup once. It just seemed like more work than it was worth …and we all love the store bought more. But at least I can say I did it once lol. Love all your videos. And your family is just lovely 🥰 What is that cactus plant on your windowsill? I have to have one! Can you let me know about it ?
I have had (still have) multiple 22 quart roasters and I LOVE THEM. I am curious though how you keep the acid from tomatoes and such from eating the finish in the roasting pan? Every one I’ve had ends up with the finish flaking off and I have to toss it and buy a new pan, but that gets expensive! Any tips?
You mentioned in your tomato sauce recipe video that you had trouble with the open kettle ones staying sealed long-term? Do you feel that the ketchup is different? Love your content! Thank you so much for all the helpful information! (I open kettled all of my tomatoes this year, so I'm hoping for the best 😅)
I enjoyed watching your video 😊

I would also like that recipe please.

Adjust your children's pallet by mixing 1/2 &1/2 store bought in store bottle. It never gets empty.
watching this a year later and ketchup has doubled in price, will be making our own, thank you for sharing your knowledge, can't put a price tag on that❤
Same

GOD is indeed very good. I love learning a more traditional way of doing things, so I come to your channel. Thank you for sharing, I love your videos so much, and you.
I made ketchup last year. It was delish. Enjoying all your videos and your family
I have never tried to make ketchup, but after watching this video I will. Love your channel. Have a blessed day.
Thanki you for sharing this open kettle method and your ketchup recipe. This method is definitely not something they teach anymore, but my mom used to do this with her hot pepper jelly. Thanks for such a thorough explanation.
My grandmother who was raised Amish but left in later life made her own ketchup and tomato paste. Delicious.
Thanks so much for sharing! Now if only I could get a tomato harvest like you. Happy canning. ❤️🇨🇦

I canned your catsup recipe yesterday! Love the simplicity of it !!

Just found this video. Thank you for sharing the recipe and the process. Can’t wait to try this next season!
I’m going to try your recipe for ketchup, have already got the baked beans on making that. LOVE your recipes! Thank you so much!❤
Wow the flowers around the house are pretty
I absolutely love your videos ! How old was Kendrick when yall adopted him ! He absolutely loves your cooking ❤as does all your family so comforting and informative
Absolutely love this, I told my husband im going to try this, he said as long as it tast like Heinz lol.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience and family with us! I love your videos and always learn something.
That was great! And such a great idea tasting the store-bought while you cooked it to get the taste right 👍
I watched a video from Living Traditions Homestead, she has a recipe that tastes like Heinz. I've tried it and my family likes it.
Your landscaping really turned out beautiful 😍
Great video ❤️ Sarah, from Living Traditions homestead has a great Heinz ketchup recipe in her videos
If you put some ground cloves in with the cinnamon it will elevate the flavour big time.
Your home and the sunrise was sooo beautiful. 😊

Those tomatoes look delicious. My first time here.

GOD is good, all the time!! Thank you for the recipe
Your house and homestead are so pretty.
Thank you, now I understand my hotdog relish method from my mother. It does not get hot bathed either.
I noticed you use Rada knives! I think they are one of the best kitchen utensils.
Yes my favorite
I've wanted to make ketchup but have always been afraid no one would like it and then that would have been a waste of my tomatoes and time. I'm curious to see what your kids think when you pop open a jar. Thank you for sharing your recipe. Blessings to you and the family!
You can always make a small batch using canned tomatoes. See if they like it, then you can make big batches and can them when they do 😊
Love this. Thank you very much for sharing this recipe with us.. our chickens and turkeys would love the tomato scraps
I remember my Grandma’s homemade ketchup. It’s been a long time, but I loved the sweet, cinnamon taste. One day I will make some.
Great video! I think the pigs need to learn some table manners, though. 😂
Thankyou for sharing this. I have never made ketchup but an keen to try after seeing your demonstration.
Yes on question 3. Only citizens should vote. Thank you.
My mom always made ketchup. It was the best
Thanks!
Oh your cat looks just like mine😸love the video been wanting a good recipe 👍 Blessings to you and your family
Why would any woman want straight hair when they could have beautiful curly wavey hair like yours! ❤
I’m definitely trying this! Thank you 😊
Your home and gardens are beautiful.
Thank you so much!
Totally agree. I have tomatoes from my garden. Plus I want to know what's in my ketchup. Thank you!
I love your apron, super cute. Thanks for showing your method for ketchup. I would like to try that someday. I am growing lots of roma tomatoes this year for sauce.
Ruthann sells the pattern for her apron on her website, and has a great video on how to make it. She’s great, isn’t she!
Loved seeing how you make ketchup, thank you! (I have a thrifted roaster just like that and it wobbles too, just like yours! 😅)
Roaster twins
Today my roaster is filled with tomato sauce that is going to be canned up as spaghetti sauce. Last of my ripe tomatoes! Then on to the green tomatoes for salsa verde and green enchilada sauce.
Thanks for this recipe! God IS good!
I found your ketchup recipe! Thanks.
Easy, simple. Thank you.
German Ketchup is sweet compared to the US tile catch ups we lived in Baumholder Germany for two years I loved it
Question I don't want or have clear gel. Can I just use a regular cornstarch slurry to thicken it, or can I just leave it on the heat longer to reduce it to thicken it.
This is awesome! I'm definitely going to try this!
Love this method.😊❤
What beautiful shelves of jars !
You are so inspiring with your videos. My mom made sauerkraut and green Beans all the time! Your name is German last name !
Thank you for this video.

my mom always added nutmeg as a secret ingredient and nowadays I understand why. It just do the trick in any dish with a tomato base to round it out.
Thanks saved recipe love to watch you.
Thanks for sharing! Let us know how everyone liked it!
I love your video’s! They have inspired me to make more from scratch, and I love that I have control of what goes into my food.
Just a question, clear gel isn’t available in Australia. Is there a way to make it without?
You must have the best tasting hams!!!
If I'm uncomfortable with open kettle can this ketchup be pressure canned or is it too thick for that?
Thank you for sharing!! How would I make this spicy? My husband loves spicy ketchup. Thank you!!!
I’m still trying to get through all your videos. lol. I made ketchup once. It just seemed like more work than it was worth …and we all love the store bought more. But at least I can say I did it once lol. Love all your videos. And your family is just lovely 🥰
What is that cactus plant on your windowsill? I have to have one! Can you let me know about it ?
You have some awesome recipes. Do you just cook the ketchup down more if you don’t want to add sure gel? Maybe 1/2 way? Thanks.
Hello! Could you share where that lovely large wooden paddle stirring spoon came from? Thank you for the video!
@Ruthannzimm
Any tips?
While you are making the ketchup, you say 2 onions per gallon, but the recipe says 1 onion. Which is correct?
Can I do this in crockpot? I don’t have roaster😞
Looks great to me!
I have a roaster like that. It was my mother in loves❤
Don’t know if you’ll ever read this, but had to try…could you have washed , than froze them, & done them once unthawed, at a later date?
That's a mighty big spoon! Lol lol
Where did you get your plates and cups? Cloves are good for flavor is also good.
Any chance of doing video tour of your canning pantry??
You mentioned in your tomato sauce recipe video that you had trouble with the open kettle ones staying sealed long-term? Do you feel that the ketchup is different? Love your content! Thank you so much for all the helpful information! (I open kettled all of my tomatoes this year, so I'm hoping for the best 😅)
I wonder if the ketchup retains the heat longer because it's thicker? Maybe it melts the rings better.
Can I switch out the sugar with xylitol or stevia?
Do you skin your tomatoes or are they ground up with the tomatoes, does it make a difference to the taste
Beautiful home
I'm eager to try this open kettle method. Your way of canning makes so much sense. Thanks for the video! 🪻
The clear jel you used - was it cooked or the instant form?
What can i use that would be just as delicious as tallow. Don't
Have access to tallow or fresh killed beef.
Thank you I found it! I was watching your baked beans recipe so I qanted your ketchup.
I also watched her baked bean recipe and wanted to make her ketchup....yay for finding it!!
Great job I would like to do this, Which Vitamix are you using? I need to get me one.
Of course you thrifted the vintage roaster You're the second hand queen be it yard sales, thrift stores, or auctions!
I am new to canning and have a strange question but would you use your instapot to pressure can anything
@user-us6tl3xz4p. Read your insta pot manual. It will tell you if it's designed to do pressure canning - some are & some are not.
Awesome Homestead
Could you do it without the gels also do you have to have sugar
