"So you walk eternally through the shadow realms, standing against evil where all others falter. May your thirst for retribution never quench, may the blood on your sword never dry, and may we never need you again."
Blasphemous is a real piece of a game, building it's world upon both real life religion and it's historical portrayal into one twisted abomination of dystopia
Just religion in general. I meant, that usually religion preaches about these allpowerfull beings, that control every aspect of life, control all the little things in the world, they appear in any and every religion around the world in uncountable numbers, from fae and gnomes to angels and God-creator, from forest gatherings of humble satyrs to mighty pantheons of personified natural disasters. From religious point of view there's rhyme and reason to everything, and human has a necessary role in it, however miniscule it might be, and so we all must continue moving forward in accordance with the will of the gods. But once you start digging into what religion actually was, all that comes up are humanity's sins. Bloody sacrifices, govermental control, extortion, constraints, personal over communal, wars, pillaging and robbery - despite such highly dignified and exalted portrayal, every religion is tainted to some degree. After all, we romanticize crusaders - well, at least, I do, knights are fucking cool - but looking at their crusades it's hard not to ask "How are they different from nazis?". Well, for one, they were victorious and wrote their story as merely a fulfillment of God's will. Deus vult, brother. And Blasphemous manages to unite these two sides of religion into the worst possible scenario of gods *actually* willing all that blood and murder, of gods infighting for power and ranks, of humans at authority gaining godly abilities and using them in personal interests - all the while it's staged as something grandious and outside of humans' meddling. It's not a new idea or setting, but Blasphemous just keeps the bar high in the sky all throughout it's story, there are no sudden unnecessary elements, no "Ah, it's all bad, because demons were decieving humanity", nor "Actually, gods are kinda aliens and they just harvest humans" and neither "Gods were humans once, and as such they can't be perfect". The gods in Blasphemous are inherently flawed just because they are, no reason is needed, and that's just terrifying to think about, that something what shouldn't be questioned, the axioms of nature itself are wrong. And when they aren't true... what is? And that's another part, where many stories fail, but Blasphemous manages to get it. Most often in such corrupted worlds a hero suddenly rises to overthrow old order and set things right, bringing in morals we know to be proper in real world. But regardless if armies march after them or if they romantically rebel against the world alone, how do these heroes even know what is right? If their whole life they only knew their world, how can they tell what's bad and what's good, how can they match our understanding of correct order? Well, the Penitent One, the player, doesn't, they are just following will of The Miracle, playing their miniscule part in the world. They set out on their journey not because of rights or wrongs, but because that's what they were told to do by people responsible before The Miracle. And even killing gods on their way, Penitent One doesn't feel special, as they emerge from corpse pile of what's left from their former bretheren only to succumb to the pile of ash, having their helmet placed alongside others. How many had failed, before Penitent One came here? How many will come here, after you fail? How many died on their way and how many became gods you slay on your way? It matters not, for there will always be another Penitent One to replace the fallen. An always alone soldier of infinite army, ready to face selfish gods of the world. P.S.: A-a-and if you were asking what religion the game itself is actually based upon, many people seem to agree it is medieval spanish catholicism, aka "Nobody expects spanish inquisition!".
@@Orange_Tree_ "How are they are different from nazis?" The crusaders actually did fucked up things but comparing to nazis is a bit over the top. Anyway thanks for the insight on the game lore.
@@midoevil7 K, I'll admit I should have mentioned more than just crusaders, but thing is, it's not just about catholicism. Be it aztec priests demanding human sacrifices to keep people afraid of their authority, or scandinavian raiders convincing themselves that Odin wants to see them pillage innocent people, or some people twisting words of Quran to make enemies out of anybody with different beliefs - humans been using religion to justify their most vile actions throughout history. Of course, such bullshit was never reserved for just the religion, some people even use their status alone to sell their atrocities as benevolence, as we have seen with certain russian president. But at least you expect a politician to be a bag full of shit so it's not really disappointing when they turn out to be one. However, when it comes religion, to words of God or gods, which are supposed to shape entire reality and your own life by extension, it hurts much more by sheer contrast to learn they were false. One thing I'm sure of, is that if there is a God or gods, they wouldn't want their children to rip each other's guts out just because ome side was "wrong". If there is a conflict, there must be a way to solve it peacefully, and that's what, in my understanding, religion is supposed to be about
My guess is that the High Will act behind the Miracle, bring down both bless and punishment. But by the time of the Penintent One, mostly the High Will bend everything to penancy, sacrifire just so everyone can only earn peace in death (the other side of the dream). - They bend Crisanta will and mind with chain, blind her from the fact the High Will is behind everything. - They take the body of the sister of Esdras, make them barely able to comunicate so that the High Will can control him to do their biding. (If you find the sister tomb, she will tell you that her souless body is taken, she cant tell her brother what is truly happening.) - Even though the turned throne event cast down penance everywhere to punish those blaphemies, it is a long time ago but affliction, diseases still show up everywhere. Monster all over the place, diseases in innocent village like Albero, many people go on penancy like Redento but they only find peace in death. The High Will does not seem like they gonna stop these thing any time soon. ---> This lead to the secret ending, where the Penitent One decide to kill the High Will, free everything from its Work, from its chain, from its rule. To be able to do this, first Penitent One must realize what is truly the cause of all this, know something wrong from Perpetva (sister of Esdras) warning, know the truth and receive the special blade from the golden face under the Knot of the Three World tree. Using the blade to free Critsanta's will, she is able to tell Penitent One where to find the High Will, protect him and bring him back from death where no little angel can help him. The moment he able to kill the High Will, they curse him to be dead, unable to return, to be forever forgotten, nothing can save him from this penancy. I dont really know about that heart in the sky in the end of the ending. Maybe it the Miracle free from the High Will chain? Or Penitent One somehow by all the suffering he endure, all the thing he took upon himself to free the other, all of those have finally paid off, and in return the salvation come, he become the next Miracle? It is just my wild guess so dont pay much mind to a random stranger like me. :)
@@LuckyLiarK The High Wills commanded the power that would be known to those within Cvstodia as The Miracle. Dialogue from Deogracias in The Knot of the Three Words outright states that the young man who would become The Twisted One begged the High Wills for punishment. They answered his prayers, causing him to be malformed into his twisted state, demonstrating the first manifestation of The Miracle. The High Wills commanding The Miracle also explains what Jibrael meant when he claimed that The Miracle was jealous of Laudes passionate devotion to The Twisted One. Draining her passion to create the four Amanecidas worked too well since people focused more on her, and The Twisted One, than the High Wills, and they wanted all of that devotion to themselves. She was punished by being sealed in that mirror, while her Amanecidas were sealed within glass sarcophagi, burying them deep to be forgotten until they were needed. By slaying the High Wills, The Miracle can no longer manifest because they were the ones who commanded the power that gave it function.
As simple as I can make it, the first ending is you taking on the sins of all of humanity stopping people from becoming monsters by punishing themselves. This ending, you are cursed to be forgotten completely if you defeat the three wills, but you choose to anyways and end the three wills of the miracle and become the new will.

I played this game when it launched. Did not care for it. Came back recently and it's a 10/10 one of the best games of all time. Unbelievable how they tweaked the backgrounds and the new areas and bosses. Also I love the new filters you can pick. I change them up during the runs. Not only that a reason to play NG+ immediately. I'm just so in love with it now. The music and the lore is stuck in my head and I can't believe the devs did all this stuff for free. I was talking to a guy at work and he mentioned he did the same as me. Played it at launch but didn't like it. Told him that so far this is my new fav metroidvania game. He said he remembers me saying I didn't like it. Told him to get the update and play it again. 100% love it now .When the game first launched it felt repetitive for the first half and easy. The second half felt confusing. Some of the stages looked half baked. They def reworked the areas and I love the backtracking. Plus some of the greatest pixel art I ever seen. So many good reasons to play this game.
"And those, the Heresy of the Miracle has been stop, his preacher, silenced, his churchs, destroyed, and his books, burned, and a new day brights in the holy lands of Custodia, and the pain finally cease, and the sins finally are forgive and the guilt... finally stopped, and the penance... Accomplished."
How you did this is beyond me. I barely beat Isidora and Crisanta's phase 2 (or phase 3 if you count how her attacks change during the first encounter). I did manage to beat Escribar's third phase on my first attempt, but hitless? Never gonna happen. Good work!
Guess they realize no power can stop the one that had gone through all kind of penance, all bosses with all kind of power and none can stop him. So yeah pretty much they use their last power to curse him to be forever forgotten, truly dead that no little angel or Critsanta is able to bring him back from death.

Funny thing about Crisanta's true ending fight, you still get the money for beating her first phase even in the true ending path. because of this i was able to get enough really easily for the alms for oblivion achievement and outfit by just failing to beat her 2nd phase for a while.
This game is just art. I don't have the words to describe how I love this game. I completed the Good and Bad Ending, now I need to unlock this endind, and play Blasphemous 2, but because of school I haven't been able to play this masterpiece again. "Because mysterious are the ways of the Miracle"
Yes. the Pentitent One was resurrected by the Miracle, and when the High Wills were destroyed, so was all that was created and preserved by the Miracle, so the Penitent One's extended life ceased.
I'm surprised after all that big talk, and the hype moment Crisanta stands back up for round two.. they allowed her to kneel for free hits? I would have expected the fight to be merciless to the player.
So, what would you have if you mixed some screwed up fantasy, Dark Souls, disturbing artstyle and religious leitmotifs? You'll get Blasphemous. I'm scared of this game, but at the same time - I am in awe. This is gonna become a masterpiece, a hidden gem buried under the heap of mediocre indie-games.
Hey so i have a very good game sudgestion for you. Deaths Gambit Afterlife. In the game you actually get rewards for doing (most) heroic bosses (which are the harder versions of the bosses) without taking any damage. So you will have a great time helping us out with learning if the final bosses do actually have a no hit reward. But either way it would be great if you played the game as it has a great story and great everything else.

@@Orange_Tree_
Well, thanks for the description, is that how many atheists view religion ? It is more just like being anti-catholicism
If there is a conflict, there must be a way to solve it peacefully, and that's what, in my understanding, religion is supposed to be about
FFS, I barely understood the last ending, now this one is even MORE incomprehensible. Great video though
Im pretty sure we just killed the miricle, or at least its current expression.
(If you find the sister tomb, she will tell you that her souless body is taken, she cant tell her brother what is truly happening.)
- Even though the turned throne event cast down penance everywhere to punish those blaphemies, it is a long time ago but affliction, diseases still show up everywhere.
This is amazing.
felicidades compañero, la gran mayoría prefiere matarla con full hechizos lo mas rápido posible pero allí no se disfruta el enfrentamiento con el jefe...felicidades nuevamente y saludos desde PERÚ.
I came here to tell you CONGRATULATIONS for getting 200K subs 🎉 :^)
Just put 15 hours into a new playthrough to get the new ending only to find out if you fight Crisanta before delivering the Traitor's eyes, you can't complete the quest. Thanks for uploading this bc otherwise I wouldn't have seen the canon ending. Ngl, I'm pissed at the devs for that move, especially after busting my ass to beat Isidora and Sierpes. A warning would have been nice...
the sierpes fight looks like a true test of endurance
23:51 Deogracias at least is helping XD
Is Crisanta Blasphemous' Hornet? Will Blasphemous 2 main character be Crisanta XD?
Hollow Blasfemus "Silk prayer"
If she is the main character, the only thing we will see is a completely black screen.
Crisanta: "Shaw" . Apperantly
What if you could do:
Intresting story about how Miracle is not a Perfect God that knows everything and just wanted to give humanity what they wanted (punishment) but by seeing how much suffering it caused he seends his son (penitent one) to show them the act of true selfless love
OR
Make a story into generic JRPG
The team Had shown US.
Gellot is my Lord...! Good Job...! I'm waiting to watch Blasphemous II in 2023.
Crisanta ost is my new jam
Awesome video!
15:09 The moment Escribar became Eskuribaru
From seeing everything with “No Damage”, you are a certified pro gamer.
I was so worried the snake was going to be underwater. that'd have been awful.
That true guilt aspect looks badass, so freakin' cool
Sierpe’s soundtrack is so good !!
Accomplished."
or is it?
whoever put that sword spear into sierpes head is a beast
The serpent reminds me of the 2-headed dragon boss in Bloodstained, at least in design concept. But Sierpes is a way more rad design though.
Considering Miriam already made a cameo in this game, that inspiration isn't farfetched at all
How you did this is beyond me. I barely beat Isidora and Crisanta's phase 2 (or phase 3 if you count how her attacks change during the first encounter). I did manage to beat Escribar's third phase on my first attempt, but hitless? Never gonna happen. Good work!
This is beautiful!
22:45 Why wasn't this the final boss?
I would like to know, too.
Agree, it would have been way cooler
Guess they realize no power can stop the one that had gone through all kind of penance, all bosses with all kind of power and none can stop him. So yeah pretty much they use their last power to curse him to be forever forgotten, truly dead that no little angel or Critsanta is able to bring him back from death.
They are string pullers, not direct fighters. That is why they chose escribar as their champion.
There is a reason why Escribar was his guardian.
Yoooo, watch the animation on the tears of the High Wills closely in the ending. It's mesmerizing. This art is outstanding.
List of things I'll never accomplish: This.
I have been eyeing this game since it came out and honestly watching this video was pretty cool. Kinda won me over a little more.
Also. I had to scroll through the comments and see what the deal was with this Crisanta character and watching that fight gave me killer Devil May Cry 3 - Dante vs Virgil vibes holy cow
All is silent and calm. Hushed and empty is the womb of the sky.
This game is a masterpiece
it truly is a Masterpiece. Its beautiful, unique and powerful. This game is a work of art and easily one of my favorites of all time.
“Babe, wake up. Gellot just uploaded.”
Sierpes is like a snake with Kars' DNA
oh my god.. no hesitation will buy this game on steam
Funny thing about Crisanta's true ending fight, you still get the money for beating her first phase even in the true ending path. because of this i was able to get enough really easily for the alms for oblivion achievement and outfit by just failing to beat her 2nd phase for a while.
Holy fuck the music in the 2nd fight with Crisanta. ❤
Yup getting this game now.
Chrisanta theme gives real boss fight vibes
I absolutely adore the aesthetics of this game
13:40 When a girl tries to hit you hard, but you are going for "no hit" ✋
This game looks awesome thank you
Tbh I just like that they changed Crisanta's va
Bro This is too beautiful The new blasphemous update completely blew my mind 🤯with the new bosses and the new soundtracks 😍
This game is just art. I don't have the words to describe how I love this game. I completed the Good and Bad Ending, now I need to unlock this endind, and play Blasphemous 2, but because of school I haven't been able to play this masterpiece again.
"Because mysterious are the ways of the Miracle"
14:18 "No, be free of your veiled agony and see the truth"
So... the player freed everyone from the miracle, but in return died? And then was laid to rest
Yes. the Pentitent One was resurrected by the Miracle, and when the High Wills were destroyed, so was all that was created and preserved by the Miracle, so the Penitent One's extended life ceased.
Hello, how do you do the skill at minute 3:29 on the controller? Do you have to carry a prayer or rosary bead equipped?
The soundtrack in this game is so damn godlike
Wow boy you’re amazing!
This game's song is incredibly good
I had to meditate and formulate a battleplan during a shower to beat Isidora. This dudes crazy
The music in this game 100/10
next to SOTN this game is the best. I really REALLY hope they make some sort of animated show - those cut scenes are gorgeous.
What a fantastic game
I got this game on sale before the DLC was released. Aside from some difficulty balance this game was a ton of fun.
