Great video James, I purchased a version 1 and 2 as gifts. The big issue with the original watch that this homages is the movement was a lemon and the company tried to claim it was designed that way! With this one you get the looks and a solid movement at a third of the price. The controversy was a homage of a microbrand, interesting times 🤔
I brought the same version with the same swiss movement as you when they first came out. I was in two minds and previously almost brought the serica. I liked it to a degree. I loved the bracelet, but I'm glad I did as I couldn't get on with it in the end, so I ended up flipping it. I had no problem with the watch, but it wasn't for me, so i'm glad I didn't spend all that money on the serica. Keep up the great content 👍
I bought my version over 12 months ago. I went with the PT5000 & the reason being is, I’ve got other watches with that movement. Never had an issue to date. I couldn’t justify the extra money for the SW200. Aside from that they are a very well made watch, lume is fantastic, mesh bracelet is very good too. Although a little awkward fitting it. I also considered the Serica but got turned off with the movement they use & their reported lack of backup service. I think recently they have upgraded the movement.
Excellent review/discussion of an attractive watch. I bought the Tandorio 40mm version with NH35A movement which of course is a homage of a homage. It doesn't have a date window or that ace mesh strap, but for $72 on a rubber strap it was a bargain and is a delight to wear.
Thanks for your thoughts on it. On its own, it’s a brilliant watch even though it’s a blatant homage/copy. But I think Serica left a bad taste in people’s mouths because they put out a bad product (initially) and doubled down on why they did it instead of addressing it. Which is a shame because the design is fantastic.
@@PocketUau Warning, long Post ahead. When Serica first launched their 5303, which this IX&DAO watch is based on, they put a SOPROD Newton Movement that had some pretty serious issues, and when customers complained, instead of apologizing or addressing it, Serica doubled down and said they put that movement in the watch on purpose and all the problems (such as the hacking feature NOT working) were just “features” of the movement. So people got a bad taste in their mouths and then of course IX&DAO almost immediately came out with this version with better (or working) movements. It also didn’t help the original doesn’t have their logo or name on the watch so IX&DAO’s version looked almost like a blatant counterfeit. So the hard core Homage haters really voiced their dislike for the IX&DAO. Jody from Just One More Watch has two good videos on it. One, a year ago addressing the problem and two a more recent one where Serica put in a different movement, but there are issues with that one also. 🤷🏻♂️
@@PocketUauthey released the watch with a terrible movement with big QC issue. Wouldn't hack or crown wouldn't engage I think. They claimed it was a feature not a bug.
Precisely, it's not a homage, it is a copy, plain and simple, I love the design, would have bought the V1 but wouldn't risk a faulty movement as a "design feature", idiotic brand owner response!
Good job, James, for featuring this watch despite the controversy. This watch is a direct rip off of another brand. However, that brand was heavily inspired as well. What bothers me is those who own homages of other brands then cry foul when a micro-brand is homaged. That is hypocrisy. I purchased this watch with the Sellita movement, black dial and blue bezel. I am thoroughly enjoying this watch!
A very nice looker! I haven't had enough experience seeing the brand reviewed to buy one. I love the bracelet style which is similar to the San Martin SN0085 original design (which really appeals to me). Maybe you could get one for review 😊
I bought the V3 PT5000. White dial like yours, has less text signed clasp and crown. I really like it, quite classy. I also bought the Tandoorio version in red. The Tandoorio has a terrible dial and crystal.
James - I recommend that you open the back of yours just to ensure it is really an SW200. Your date window font is that of the PT5000. I bought the Sellita on V3 specifically to avoid that date font and mine is indeed different and using the regular Sellita font on the date wheel.
Also, you have the previous v2 version here with “IXDAO & IPOSE” on the dial and three lines of text. With “Fabriqué en Chine” under the 6. The latest v3 was reverted back to two lines of text as per the v1. v1 had “Friends of IPOSE” under the 6, whilst the latest v3 now has “IXDAO Diver” in this position.

Great long term review. Having seen the comparison between this and the original, I think IXDAO improved it by making the dial larger. I think I may be in a minority of one, because I don't like the dial or bracelet design of the original.
That bezel kind of had a Seiko sound to it. It's a great watch, and I think you made a good decision with the SW200. Relatively speaking, that option really isn't that much more on this watch. Great pickup, James!
Great watch I brought the white blue with the SW200, Great Watch brought for £198 in sale. Considering a SW200 will cost well over £100 and a quality mesh £50 the value is huge. My SW200 runs at +5 to +6 and winds a little nicer than the PT5000. The only slight quality control issue is where the Polished lugs meet the brushing the definition could be slightly better. I don’t think the Homage will hurt Serica as the Serica was not well known and can benefit from the attention. Only drawback the mesh can be hard to put on.
Nice review, many thanks. I have had this same watch for a few months and it has become one my clear favourites in my collection. Even the bracelet, which I was hesitant about, has proved to be super comfortable and smart looking on the wrist. The PT 5000 works great as well (staying accurate) and I love the lume. I had never even heard of Serica before seeing this brand on AliExpress, so my question is which watch is the homage version?!! The IX&Dao is the better of the 2 imho.
It's a nicely made watch, but pretty spot on to the original, however, apart from watch enthusiasts like us, very few people know the original as Serica is certainly not a household name and some people might confuse it with the old Al Pacino movie. 😉 I'd wear it but I would like to see a GMT version of this, I'd definitely buy it. Good looking watch, yes a bit controversial, personally think the community as a whole accepts hommages more of the big brands ie rolex etc, but it gets a bit more polarised when they hommage micros. Having said that the watch they've hommaged had a dog of a movement and customer service was dire (they've just bought out another with a better movement, a lot higher priced though). Great reveiw as ever, cheers.
I have one of these with black dial and PT5000. It runs great at around -1 spd on the wrist. Be careful that the latch is secure. I had mine pop open somehow and the watch fell onto the floor. Not sure if I didn't latch it right, or if it got caught on something? Anyway, yes this is a very nice watch.
Possibly the company specializing in dials in PRC gor the ball rolling with this, with ixDao selecting components, assembling & brushing. @WATCHingJames does not at all change that it's a blatant copy of a Serica. The 'changes' you mention are not significant. In my opinion the right way to produce a 'homage' is to come up with a unique design that perhaps borrows a few subtle features (from the Serica in this case). You mention that price did not factor in, but this is total nonsense. If the original was the same price as the Chinese one, you would have bought that (which is fine, just admit that was the primary reason). All the current Serica designs are really great and above watch is just a poor rip off of the 5303. Every one should be ashamed buying this cheap Chinese rip-off designs (5303 with date, they did not understand a thing called symmetry!!).
