After having done BJJ for a little less than a year, I got into a situation last February at a party with a drunk individual who threw several punches at me - after the second punch, I did the arm drag to RNC and safely brought him back to his senses... he slept it off and there was no need to finish the choke. This move is money!!!
Awesome! I'm a blue belt myself. BJJ is the one art where you can learn to be effective after just a few months of training. Love it! Do you still train?
I like the way you describe that an arm drag may be the opponent moving toward you or if they are "bigger/stronger" you enter toward them to complete the technique. Many systems make an assumption that when you do "this" the opponent will always do "that." Adaptation is key.
Actually it’s about sensitivity... If you go for the arm drag and you’re bigger than the other guy. It’s a small guy resists hard to the arm drag. you just turn your body into his back it all depends Connection. And resistance
I'm an Italian driver and bjj practitioner. What makes me? I fall down from the chair hearing you say " like Italian driver" with umbrella move...always nice video full of details as usual...
the point is you grab the arm they telegraph first. They're not gonna think to switch arms fast enough if your offensive planned out attack is quicker than their defensive reaction response which it should be if you drill it.
You never wrestled? Most people are right handed, if he was left handed he naturally would reach with that. This arm drags goes with an outside step now way he can swing across his body with any power. More than likely, they would turn to reface you
@@hectormunoz6498 he's open for an easy KO via the left hook, and even untrained street fighters know how to throw a left hook. I would not use this arm drag in a street fight.
interesting ... will experiment with this during next cross-sparring. As an aikido-guy, immediately thought of the tenchi nage throw, but the "italian" way you showed seems equally lovely.
Grabbing someone’s wrist is one of the most difficult things to do. It’s like trying to catch the end of a whip. It’s the fastest part of the arm as it’s moving. You are much better off going for the elbow in most maneuvers because it moves four times slower than the fist.
Excellent Technique! I always thought of this Tech. ever since I was a kid. I saw an old WWII movie with William Bendix, called the "Fighting Seabees".Bendix used this exact tech. on a Boxer To show him how vulnerable he was if he left his jab out too long. I always thought it was a good tech. but the way you do it by pulling yourself instead of pulling him makes it so much better to me. Thanks for the video.
Bodylock -> mount -> take back when opponent inevitably tries to get up -> RNC. Might not even need to go the whole way if you drop them hard enough with the takedown.
This is my childhood in one video - pulling myself behind people and choking them out. The only difference is that I would jump on their back and wrap both legs around the torso. It's actually kind of dangerous because they end up falling down and they might land face first because their arms are trying to stop the choke.
Sir Rivet true. I’m fortunate to have 2 Gracie Barras. An MMA gym that has made champions and a ufc gym. A few others knocking about too. But you can still get a good school miles away its all about commitment I guess
You join a school like Gracie Academy, Gracie Humaita, Pedro Sauer Federation or JJGF/Rickson, etc. Try and get as close to the OG Gracies as you can, as their schools still focus on self-defense. Alternatively keep training and join Gracie University remotely. That's what my current teacher did, so he was still learning BJJ while filling in the self-defense stuff on the side. Now he runs his own school that's purely street BJJ.
@bowmanpwner You don't need most of that, though. Just gotta learn how to defend against shitty mounts and how to get in on people throwing haymakers, etc. MMA schools are good for that if self-defence BJJ is hard to come by.
Agreed. Aiming for the big KO is really dangerous for YOU, because if you do knock out your opponent and he does break his head on the pavement then he's going to the hospital or the morgue but you're going to jail. I've got another video on the Self Defense Tutorials channel about exactly this danger if you're interested...

Yeah, I have been watching Troy Price and company, and they do a lot of the arm dragging into head locks, etc. I like the way they incorporate karate with Bagua and other internal arts, makes a good fusion of techniques.
It s important to set off balamce your oponet so he cant defend also you shpuld low his center of gravity escpecially if you are shorter and if ypu want to make it easier
Real question... What happens when you release the chokehold? Is there a recommended follow up move or just run and hope the guys is too stunned to catch you?
very nice but I like to to take him across on a 45 degree because it helps me stay closer to him to allow a quicker second move i.e. rear chose or body slam
Arm drag is awesome. What that first hand does didn't even really matter much, it's such a simple technique. I kind of do the one arm slaps down one arm slaps up. I love your videos. I love bjj but I'm also interested in self defense.
I like the guy from FunkerTactical (is it ?) A lot of his brute honesty I find truth in. Like, I don't wanna get into rolling around on the street. Similarly I'd add, I don't wanna entertain the chance of you getting hold of me. Ergo, I'm not going to try and get hold of you. 2nd. 90% of thugs are head hunting right handers stood in orthodox stance, not stood in south paw as you demonstrate. That lead right hand is often concealed, dragging the floor for a knockout, hiding dusters, batton, knife etc. He's edging in to see what you got for him. See if you're easy pickings. Unexpected step-in jab - straight right has always worked champion for me. If you see that right hand, you not likely to be putting no tricep pull on the man.
How about, grab their right wrist with your left hand, and as you pull them towards you, you push their left shoulder with your right hand as you step to your left so they are now spinning round, your right arm is now in the position across their upper chest, slide it up to their throat while sliding your left arm to complete the naked choke! I have seen this done on the street and it works a treat.
i would love to learn from you and train with you . you are knowledged but other than that you seem to be a good person and you are very sympathetic . you also have a calming vibe and talk in a way that calms a person. . nice move btw. but it wont work well if the guy is taller
Your other hand MUST anchor onto his lower back MUST if he has any more than 3 stripes on his white belt . Love your stuff sir ... see you inside your website
Quite honestly an arm drag is important and effective, but the first technique in gracie Jiu jitsu for self- defense is not to engage in a fight. Then only when you must, self defense starts with managing distance, not getting punched or stabbed. While you doing the arm drag, your open to both. This is not self defense
I’ve taught this move for almost forty years. We drop into a front or bow stance to break the persons posture. This was called a carotid restraint back in the eighties. It was taught to NYC cops as a method to subdue people on PCP. Unfortunately it was not taught correctly in many cases and people ended up dead or with brain damage from windpipe restriction. The cops were shown to lift suspect off his feet and not release until he stopped kicking. I always reserved this one for my advanced Tae Kwon Do students who could grasp the responsibility and risks associated with it.
Kxe nothing except speed and surprise. theres better way to get to his dead side. use the back of your right hand to to deflect his right hand and slide to his dead side. its done in aikido. check 'hand deflections' videos by lenny sly on rogue warriors channel
Try it in sparring and you'll see that it's all contextual. You're not usually going to be able to pull off an armdrag in a detached situation when everyone is swinging for the fences, however setting one up during the pre-combat phase (for example if someone has their finger in your face) or during the clinching phase is very possible. Also it's worth pointing out that an armdrag with your right hand followed by your own left hook is a great offensive combination.
If they do manage to throw a hook at you when you have their triceps. They're not going to be able to generate much power because you are 1. pulling the off balance, and 2 holding the triceps limits their ability to turn their hips and generate enough power to hurt you.
Because the attacker NEEDS to retract that arm to actually throw the punch. If they can't they can reach out to you with their right, but they can NOT punch you. Try it.
Hmm try showing a shorter person doing that to a taller person. Under hooks also don't work if you're shorter. I think everyone needs to basically build their own game but as a short heavy dude I would favour an ankle pick over that personally.
When you do the drag, is there a purpose to grabbing the inside portion of the arm (between the side of the arm and the body) vs the inside of the elbow (where blood is drawn(
If the guy is the 280 jacked up dude, no fucking way is he going to let a guy 140 get the rear naked choke on him like that. It is going to be very difficult to pull him backwards.
