- In this video I will do some service on my Technics RS-1500 reel to reel recorder.
I found this footage that I shot in 2017, but I never finished it then.
Now I made a RUclips video of that lost footage.
I hope you will enjoy!
I edited the subtitles, so they are a lot nicer to read!

05:03 speed measurement
06:39 wow and flutter measurement
10:24 capstan pulse adjustment

You have all the required tools to do the job properly, nice!
Great work Philip
Phillip, I was so impressed with the performance of this deck, I bought another one. Great for recording originals and performing post and final productions. That high end response was very impressive. I paid about $900 fro the first one and then when I got the decond one the price went up to $1100 in less than a year.
Very interesting and informative video. 👍
Excellent tutorial.
Thank you, I have same 1506 and now maintence, and your video help me
Great 👍👍👍
Wish you did a second part to this
Wow Flutter shouldn't be fluctuating that much on the meter. Either your tape has drop outs or your tape path has obstruction / dirty. My 1506 is steady on my Kenwood meter at DIN weighted .055 - .065
I am having a problem with the brakes not engaging, i have replaced the pads with cork and i removed the bellows and turned around the rubber orifices about a year ago and it has started doing what described above. Fo i need to do the bellows job again? Has anyone has had this problem before? And how did you resolve it?
Thank you
What does it mean when it says to measure playback frequency against 400Hz. I have a digital ac volt meter and oscilloscope.
The service manual says compare output level with standard frequency 400hz at line out. Does this mean I need to plug a signal generator set to 400hz to line out. But then what value on my meter am I looking at for each frequency ?
Hello, good work. I hope to find a solution, since you have experience with these devices. I have a 1700 model. When I press the play button, the right reel turns against the right direction, as well as the winding. Find the solution for me, where is the problem? Please
When you measure wow & flutter on the same machine as where you're recording the tape, shouldn't you divide the result by 2 because the variations in speed have influence on both the recording and the playback?
I think you are absolutely right there Jac
How do you hookup oscope to the deck is it to the line in or line out. I am learning about this. Just got this same deck and only interested in playback
For the section at 11:10 see the description on screen and in the PDF (TPxxxx), and for the section at 18:00 line out of course.
@@PhilipvanderMatten thanks
Will a dual channel digital oscilloscope work for basic playback check ?
Yes.
Thank you. By far this is the best video on how to setup this deck. I’m getting mine on Tuesday. Can’t wait
Thank you and i have the same machine as well. I also Liked and subscribed.
Here are my questions:
1. Where did you find those test tapes? If I want to buy them what's the term that I should use to refer to these test tapes?
2. Modern tapes can handle much higher fluxivities, if I want to calibrate this machine at 250 or 300 nWb/M then how do I do that?
1. mrltapes.com
2. use an offset and use my claculator www.reeltoreel.nl/flux/
3. google is your friend!
@@PhilipvanderMatten Thank you, on tapeheads forum and the tech near me suggested not to mess with azimuth on older tape heads as tape heads might have physical tape path etched into them. What do you think?
@@vailaruthvik Only if there is a tape path etched into them, it is recommended not to adjust the azimuth. Instead, in that case you will have to relap them. Then the heads will be smooth again.
