I own a 96 GMC Sierra and the steering is bad, I have to hold the wheel at the 10 o' clock position to keep it straight. My brother suggested the steering gear box may be the problem because theirs a lot of play with the steering wheel. Thank you for posting this video it's very helpful.
Check tie rods also pitman arm and idler arms they can cause a lot of dead space in steering I had a Chevy s10 blazer and thought it needed a new gearbox turned out the pitman arm was loose it wasn't fully tightened either from a shop or from factory I pulled the gearbox and just replaced the pitman arm just because but like I said it was just because the pitman arm wasn't torqued down all the way it had an 1/8th of gap and causing dead space when steering left the 2 o'clock position was my center of the steering wheel until I fixed it
If you have an airbag, the first step is to secure the wheel so it doesn't turn. If the wheel gets turned while the job is being done you will need to get a clock spring also.
You forgot to show the steering box left to right travel in total degrees , then Divide in half gives you dead center never just assume the pump is at dead center out of the box just a FYI . Nice job other wise.
Is rebuilding it a reasonable increase in part reliability versus a replacement gearbox such as the brand you mention thats to expensive for some of us. Thank you Sir.
Rebuild kits are relatively inexpensive and it's pretty simple to rebuild a gear box mostly o rings 1 main bearing and some clips a couple videos on RUclips and anyone with the right tools mainly the spanner style wrench to open the gear box but there also inexpensive to buy or easy enough to build if you have a welding machine
Changed mine today and got a new pitman arm while I was at it. Had to use a friends air impact to remove the 34mm nut on the pitman arm... but it took me about 2 and a half hours of work... dirty work 💪
@@cavanyaw so far the truck has been parked since 🤦♂️ Only because I’m finishing up the last bit of my 6” RC lift so I figured I’d tackle the entire project all at once I’m this 👌 close to being done tho maybe tomorrow evening But I don’t imagine anything on the power steering wouldn’t work, or I hope not 😅
i know this is a year old comment but i get all my parts from Detroit Axle through amazon, i just bought a new power steering gear for my 1994 gmc sierra c1500 on June 13th 2022, costed me $199.25 + tax with free shipping on amazon prime. the manufactured part number was 1417GB. hope this helps everyone.
Sounds like something in your front end needs adjustment or maybe damage to your worm gear in your gear box. Take it to a front end shop and have em look at it

Just did this swap in my 95 c1500. Actually made the steering worse because the jeep shaft has a unneeded U joint on the firewall side. Ended up putting the old shaft back in with new rag joint
Highly suggest rebuilding steering pump yourself …. After going through 3 “new” and “rebuilt” pumps that didn’t work …. rebuilt old one myself and works perfectly

Good Job. Explained how to do it well.
Red head power steering boxes are nice as well

Good idea. I wished I knew how to do that

Lee Power Steering, they are out of California. Pricey!
Awesome video sir..thank you!if anyone worked on mine I’d want it to be you lol I like someone with a lil OCD or a lot 😂😂
Awesome video man. I got all new mevotech front end parts and a redhead box for mine
whats the torqe on the pipman arm nut, and how did you bleed the system??
If you have a 95+ with an airbag put the seatbelt through the steering wheel to prevent it from turning so you don't mess up the clock spring.

I have a 1996 k1500 I’m changing the steering gear box in. Will I need to be worried about the steering wheel air bag? Thanks

Those ratcheting wrenches are handy huh
would the steering locking up when turning one direction almost as if there is no power steering be an issue with the gearbox??

Why not just replace the seals? Just curious.
The only thing I see wrong is you didn't follow proper bleed procedure
Great vid.
Are you happy you bought a Chev yet? Lol
