Thnk you Adam. I am an 86 yr old,, Parkinson's patient, and you have given me a neat way to play music.. I learnt to play as a boy, but couldn't continue. Now I hve a way .!
That's very kind of you Melissa - I'm so pleased you found it helpful! Do download the Lesson Book as well - everything is written down in there to help you work through it all at your own pace. Thanks for the support!
it is just a grace of God,to drop at your channel,i was blind about melody and chord how they work together, but now i see.just like the song is. thanks very,i see now and i have been struggling on that point but now i see.
Adam, your teaching videos are a gold mine finding to me! They can free me up from playing on arranged music sheets only. Your advice on approaching chords by chord numbers instead of chord names frees me up from playing songs out of chord chart of a song that is written for one key only. I will be able to transpose the chords to any other keys! This is very exciting to me alrhough I know I have a ling way to go to be able to do it until I am totally comfortable with all the chords. Love your lessons! You are also generous to share your kessons in free downloadable pdf.
For anyone searching for a great piano lesson that puts it together ! ( this is it ) this has been completely helpful and informative just what I have been searching for ... I kinda had an idea about melody but a guess I thought I was doing something wrong.. This video answered my questions about melody & chords together. Melody in the pinky genius! The feeling of being wrong disappeared I feel so freed up.. Can't wait to view more lessons.. Ms Lee 8-8-2024
After playing piano for 60 years, I can still only sight read. I’m pretty good at it, but it’s like reading a story, and not really understanding the plot! Your videos are very entertaining. I haven’t really had a chance to apply the things I’ve watched yet. My theory is weak, but I’m refreshing my memory on the scales and chords. I hope in the very near future that I will have a better understanding and I will be able to apply some of the really cool things you are doing in your videos. Thank you for putting yourself out there! I’m totally enjoying watching your videos. Kudos to you!
Brilliant tutorial! I’ve only known how to use lead sheets for chords which is disappointing as it’s not often recognisable. To be provided with logical steps to link melody to chords is very useful!!! Now to 1) properly learn what you have shown here 2) to try and apply the logical steps to another song if I can! I guess the proof …..will be in the listening to how it sounds 😂. Thank you!
Adam, this is brilliant!! Using a known tune to teach this method was such a great idea. This concept has given me an intro to hamonizing and how the top note really carries the melody.....outstanding and professional video and written material........keep them coming!
Very good. I started recently to teach this in my guitar lessons - the i Iv V approach. Its like learning the formula to get to the answers instead of always being told the answers. Thanks
So meticulous..Keys Coach. You r the amazing grace. I play too but the more I see yr videos there's more ad more i wl learn. M frm India ad hav a Clavinova....luv it. Luvvvvv music. Always more to learn everyday😊😊😊
Oh man you are a great teacher you take your time to do what you are doing. What i like too is that your videos are long enough so i can learn a lot of your stuff. Many many thanks my friend GodBless you forever.
Hi Adam! I just recently discovered your channel. I'm working my way through a bout of covid so I have time on my hands as I sit around feeling like crap. I happened upon your channel and you seem to be teaching EXACTLY at the level I need. I'm self taught and while I do OK with the basics there's a level that I've been stuck at. I know some theory but not enough to be able to rely on it fully. I write some music and my friends who do know everything about music say I have a gift for finding interesting and nice chord progressions to go with my melodies. Once I get feeling better I'm going to start going through your videos because I'm sure you're going to be able to help me get to the next level. Great job! Oh BTW, I had to laugh when you were referencing the McCartney run down. The latest song I wrote that we are starting to work with has that run down in it! I put it in without consciously realizing it. When I played it for my friends one of them said 'oo that sounded Beatle-ish! Then it hit me! Lol...thanks!
Thanks so much Kev! haha that's funny about the McCartney rundown - that's the way I've always thought of that progression. Thanks for checking out the vids!
How long have I waited for someone who could teach this. If I know a song I can play it by ear, but the finishing riffs and fills with both hands is what I needed. Thank you so much!
Adam, I am so glad I saw this video today. I have always had the ability, to change up the music I am playing, and it always sounded good. But being self-taught, I would chastise myself for doing this for accuracy. Thank you for sharing this with me. Richard B
Ah Richard that's so great to hear you're a 'changer-upper!' I guess it's important to be in control of what you're playing as well - it's all about balance isn't it! So glad you enjoyed the video!
Hey I have to say that this is an excellent lesson well explained and easy to follow. I have only been trying piano for a while now and mainly play guitar and have been for the past many decades. I am I think ok with most of the music theory ref keys, scales, chords, triads, modes etc and I find it fairly easy to apply to the keyboard. So your teaching style is ideal for me and the pdf's and backing tracks are great and slowing down your lessons works well for me. So thanks again for your channel.
Congratulations. Thanks for sharing this tutorial. I like the way you teach your students, it is clear and easy to understand and use. This Tune, Chord, Tune, Chord trick, is so so simple, but never heard about this tip before. Amazing grace normally is beautifull with a deep lyrics but the backing track kindly you gave became much more beautifull. Greetings from Brazil.
Hi Adam. Been away from my laptop so I have missed a few of your vids and have just caught up. Really missed you and your vids actually. Another great lesson. I am really looking forward to the Q&A. So glad you've gone full time here although our gain your old job's loss. Really have learnt a lot and can't wait for the community and your lessons to advance and cover more advanced tips and tricks. Fills and runs and other ways to flesh out any chord chart and also improvisation technique. Hope it's going to not just be a beginners and or all the beginners out there are able to advance and enjoy the more advanced methods. It's been and will continue to be a pleasure being here and growing with the community. And being part of it from the beginning and watching the channel and community evolve is just beyond words. Thank you Adam so much.
Yeah, I feel you. But you know, I change things up everytime I play because mainly I can't remember how I played something before 'cause I thrown so much into the pot.
I have watched several of your videos… I am an adult learner who got to intermediate level after taking lessons but gave up as I got stuck and I felt I wasn’t playing what I wanted to play play. Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge.

Thank you so much Adam! I'm so glad I stumbled onto this video. I bought a keyboard 4 years ago and have been teaching myself to play. This song has special meaning because I made a video with my siblings the day after my father passed January 24, 2023. I played piano and my siblings sang while gathered around my mom. But I played single note melody. (you can see the video if you want). I will have to do this song again with your tips. By the way, I did the Benny Hill Theme Song at Costco which sounds better at 1.5 x speed. Just subscribed. 🎹 👍
This is exactly what I was looking for. This surely will help . Thankyou so so so so so much. Looking forward for some more lessons similar to this that would help in church piano playing 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Great video, especially the first part. Since I’m trying to learn basic triads and building up my keyboard skills. I can always come back to this, which is a promise. I’m learning Thoroughbass, or Ground Bass. I see that the goal of this education is to play like you’re doing. This video gives me hope and my teacher is very supportive.
Awesome! Thanks, Lawrence! Basic triads are honestly the most important thing to learn. I know so many piano players who jump straight to the complex chords, but everything is based on triads. Even the most sophisticated, rich, extended chords can be broken down into combinations of major and minor triads. From teaching Music Theory and Musicianship to postgrads here in the UK, I've seen that people often skip over the basics and then run into problems further down the line because they aren't 100% secure on their major and minor triads in every key. Get these under your fingers, and it's a complete game-changer that will serve you well in the future. I'm going to make more videos about this soon! Thanks for all the support!
Get ready for a whole new influx of subscribers! Just subscribed... Bless you mate. PS Inversions are a key part of this technique where the melody is kept on top. Thank you so much. I recently returned to the piano after being stuck at grade 4 for over 50 years! The way I had been taught was really old school. No cheats. No improvisation. Play only the notes, read all the notes. Well you can imagine how my sight reading deteriorated over the years. In the end I only played a few classical exam pieces that I could remember from those days. I gave up, my playing was repetitive and limited. A couple of weeks ago, after watching a few youtube tutorials, your being among them, I learned about simple chords…chords I knew, and had played over the years without connecting the dots. I had a true aha moment and suddenly it all made sense. I found myself playing nonstop. I played for four hours that day. Everything I could get my hands on. Popular songs, Christmas carols, classical, folk. You name it. It was as though a door had been unlocked and I could now play everything. Like wow!! I played more songs that one day than I had played all my life!! Even my husband asked what had happened! The piano had been silent for years, sat there tuned, but gathering dust. After a few days I found just playing the chords, incredibly flat. I couldn’t get past how to add the melody to it. I could see it, but couldn’t unlock it. You have just added that to my education. This is wonderful. I’m off to practise what you have just taught me!! Tune chord tune chord…genius! Will also learn the I V VI thingy. I did wonder why some said that. I’ve subscribed, liked, done the notification bell, and just downloaded your book. I can’t wait to see what other gems you have shared. I’m going to watch all of your videos at some point. Working on this first!! Thank you again xxx ❤❤❤❤❤
Adam, I can’t wait to work on this lesson! I’ve heard this hymn so many ways but you put so much soul into it! I was almost in tears. Thanks you for your generous offer of the pdf with backing tracks. God bless you and may your channel be a huge success, you’re well on your way!!
Really great lesson, Adam, thanks a lot. Congrats on the 20k! You are definitely correct about the need for a slightly different approach to the traditional way of teaching piano. I think - and this is just my opinion - there is a need to teach people in a way that they can go out and play music with others, as opposed to playing at home, and often Classical music. I think of my hands as divided into two by a vertical line between the ring and middle fingers. On the right hand the outer 2 fingers play melody and the inner 3 (2 + thumb, hopefully!!) play harmony, adding rhythm. On the left hand the inner 3 play harmony + rhythm and the outer 2 play bass notes. It's good to play small counter melodies/rhythm with the inner 3 fingers of each hand, between melodies. This is quite challenging but can be done in stages. Adding simple chord tones in a rhythm might be the easiest way to start!
Ah thank you so much! You're spot on about being able to play with others. The moment you start playing with other musicians - it's a complete game-changer. There will be lots of updates coming out on the channel in the coming months, so will keep you posted on how things develop! That's a great way to think about dividing your hands - I have a similar system for seventh chord voicings, but I'll save that for another video! Thanks once again for all the support!
Broo this is so good. Never learned ski much in one video. Very well narrated with smiley face too thanks. You can do the exact same thing with different songs too. İ would watch all of them
Yeah, I feel you. But you know, I change things up everytime I play because mainly I can't remember how I played something before 'cause I thrown so much into the pot. By the way, you make me want to sway from side-to-side.😊😊😊😊

Love that Dm7 flava.
