Doesn't matter. If he is a historical figure that played a large role in our nation's history we have every right to remember that history in many different ways including erecting a statue.

@@quintessentialnobody1320 Yes but most statues put up to honor members of the confederacy either aren't historically accurate, relevant or have no relationship to history at all, most Confederate statues are American mythology not history because they were put up during the 1920s through 1960s in regions of oppression and to make statements to people who should have "stayed in they're place" and try to put a positive spin on the confederacy

@@Dasanie I would respond to you and others but, every time I respond with a comment explaining American History, the Civil War; the importance of remembering our history, world history, World War II history, anything of that nature, RUclips fails to post my comment. So you go ahead and think however you want to think, getting nice n' cozy in those safe groups of yours, and forget...try to forget everything; or never learn it, because every time you turn your head towards history of any kind you're going to be offended, and it's going to hurt your feelings. So here is some advice: go find a box and shove your head in it, and never pull it out, and don't forget the earplugs, because RUclips doesn't seem to have a problem with us insulting each other, but it sure as hell does if we try to start educating each other.

June 16, 1914"My dear Madam: I am going to take up very carefully the matter of the Confederate Monument about which you wrote me, and see if I can find someone to give the money that is still needed. I am very much interested in the matter and thank you for writing me. During the summer months people with money are very much away from home and it is hard to reach them, so it may be I may not be able to do anything about it until fall. I want to say again how very much we all appreciate the visit of [former Confederate] General George Paul Harrison to Tuskegee. We all realize more and more that men like him are the TRUE FRIENDS of our race, and that any Monument that will keep the fine character of such heroes before the public will prove helpful to both races in the South.Yours truly,Booker T. I’ll tell you what, I’m a Man of Color and I respect the legacy of Robert E. Lee. He seems like a reluctant participant in that “Great War” and regardless of who’s side he was on, if one views him strictly from the way he conducted himself on the field of battle, he was honorable to his states cause. I’m not debating whether he was a “Traitor or not. He was a Superior Soldier and for that deserves acknowledgement. At the end of the day, he had enough conscience to surrender when the time came, opposed to allowing even more young men to die for a cause that can only be changed in the hearts of men and women, by only their free will. An individual must, on their own, alone and with the God they Pray too,Recognize, entertain and resolve their feelings on the issue of “Race”. Until each and every single individual addresses this first is honest with themselves, makes a conscience effort to “do unto others as they would have done to them”. Until this happens, there will continue to be unease and unrest. There is no quick fix to an over 400 year old problem. Please break the cycle.! It would mean so much to so many. Be well. Stay safe.

A lot of black soldiers, in the 1980. Complained about. Robert E Lee name on the main front gate at. FT Bliss. Now we known why. But we didn't know. The 9th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers, was stationed here. AMEN
From 1861 to 1862, Texas Confederates seized Fort Bliss after Texas withdrew from the Union. The fort was used to support the New Mexico Campaign, an effort to pull that territory out of the Union. The Confederates were forced to leave by a force of Californian Union troops in 1862, who used the fort as an occasional operating base.
In 1868 the fort was flooded by the Rio Grande, and a new fort built nearby. This fort was used until 1876, when it was briefly abandoned, then returned to active duty in 1878 as a permanent post for several infantry and cavalry units, including the 9th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers, an all-black cavalry unit of the Old West. This post continued until 1893, when the fort was relocated to its current headquarters site.

America is the best nation because of this and because we as people, as a nation, have the ability to discuss all aspects of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness without violence and without destruction. I struggle with this issue. I think this isn't fair to remove the monuments. The monuments were erected to honor deceased soldiers by their families. I also think the Lost Cause Mythology was the worst legacy to leave anyone. The Confederacy was a shameful & hateful legacy to leave anyone. Emmett Till's story made me realize there were 2 South's that existed. I will never view the South again the same way because of Till's story. I cried when I learned about him. I never doubted slavery was evil. It was evil and should never have happened. Robert E Lee chose to fight for the South because it was his home. He was very divided about which side to join.

He’s an evangelist. If anyone understands the psychological influence of a crowd it would be him.
Lee didn’t “choose” to secede. The Virginia legislature voted to secede and the Colonel chose not to draw his sword against his home state, where his wife and children, friends and legacy all remained. Lee wrote a letter to his wife and son about his views on slavery. He believed that slavery was a sin in the eyes of god and that the best outcome for everyone was to let it die out of natural causes. How anyone, much less a member of his lineage can call the man a traitor I do not know. However, the victors write the history books and unfortunately a man who lived a life of virtue in every regard is overshadowed by a notorious drunk. I for one will not forget my heritage and the efforts of my ancestors who fought for freedom.

I am surprised when he called Gen Lee a traitor. I don't think so. I understand that the "country" of Gen Lee is Virginia, not United States which was still a plural in the 1860s. In the 1860s, Virginia still had its sovereignty, and Gen Lee was a Virginian first and then an American.
I believe Rev. Robert Lee IV loves The United State which is a singular now since 1865. How strong is his loyalty to his current country The United State? He should apply that feeling to Gen Lee in 1861 but regarding Virginia.
While I admit the chaos and the condition of "fog of war" at that time, my understanding is:
    - 1861/04/04: Virginia voted against secession.
    - 1861/04/17: Virginia voted to declare secession after U.S President Abraham Lincoln called for troops.
    - 1861/04/20: Gen Lee sent his resignation letter to U.S Secretary of War, after turning down the offer of Abraham Lincoln to become the senior commander of Union troops, as "how can I draw my sword upon Virginia, my native state?"
    - 1861/04/23: Virginia offered Gen Lee the commander position of its state forces.
I think Gen Lee is a symbol of loyalty as a Virginian. Wherever Virginia goes, he would follow suit, even when Virginia was badly defeated in 1865, he chose "I must abide her fortune, and share her fate."
Last but not least, I understand Gen Lee considered himself as a soldier, not a politician. He had but little intention to interfere Virginia's politic policies. He just followed the duty of a soldier by honor.

Yes, the South had slaves, and at the start of the war the Union supported slavery. If the Civil war was just over slavery then Lincoln would have freed them at the on set. The war was over states rights...yes I know its hard to swallow. Would 700K men leave their families and jobs just to keep people enslaved? I say no! The south was full of good people who were also against it but felt their land was being envaded. I believe the south would have freed slaves on their own. Slavery wasn't made an issue until after the battle of Sharpsburg 1862...several years after the start of the war.
