I think the German people still remember the holocaust without statues of Hitler. Education is more important than a statue. Move them all to civil war museums and battlefields, they shouldn’t be on the middle of cities or names of schools. In my opinion.

@@mrasmussen90 why do we have statues of the baphomet? The Confederate statues are all reminders of who fought to end slavery. You might remember the holocaust but you should see how many dont, they dont teach about it in the west hardly at all. Maryann Deweerd to me there’s just no place for them in public spaces. I can make 100 analogies about how it would be similar to have statues of British Kings up in the US, that’s part of our history right? Monuments just look stupid.

How was slavery legal in the first place? Because slavery existed for thousands of years and was common place in every society. Even Africa. yes some of the people that where brought over to America to be slaves were already slaves to begin with. And don't forget, people in the North also owned slaves long before the Civil War. George Washington had slaves, Thomas Jefferson claimed all Men are created equal. He was not talking about black slaves when he said that. You do know that he also owned slaves, don't you., Stop thinking that only the leaders and Generals from the South on the Confederate side were terrible slave owners. Many never owned slaves.
We need to remember the past, So we don't make the same mistakes. We can not simply whip it out just because you don't agree with it.

I was surprised to learn that the monument debate wasn't isolated to the US. The exact same thing is going on in the UK and other countries with their own historical figures. It's like the same playbook is being used over and over regardless of the local specifics. Only the name of the local object of outrage changes from place to place. I find this very unusual. It makes me wonder if the instigators are truly upset about historical monuments or if they are just feigning outrage over whatever is locally available to complain about according to their script.

I don't understand the idea of not teaching history to the children. The future leaders of the world have history to help guide their decisions. most of the issues that we deal with today are not newly invented, I guarantee people leading these campaigns are looking at history to make their decisions.

Agreed. Every man has something bad they've done. Instead of focusing on the bad. Let's focus on the good these men have done and use the good as an example for us. Robert E Lees story is actually really inspiring. It's a true American tale. A man who felt like he had to fight for his beliefs. The wrong side i think. But still honorable none the less. People respect Rommel a German tank commander. I dont agree with the Confederate side but i can respect a man fighting for his cause. These people trying to erase our history, if they succeed, we will forget it and we will be doomed to repeat it.

What some uneducated people fail understand that parts in American history is very violent and sometimes racist, which is why we need to keep these statues so they don't repeat themselves. If you don't like the monuments, just don't look at them, and at the very worse they should be put in museum for those who want to see men who didn't want to be pushed around buy the North.

Be they a Tyrant, label them a tyrant and why for people to learn. 'Learning' from history is important. monuments aren't history (we have museums, documents, teaching, and even the internet for that), especially when they were created to intimidate black people during the jim crow and civil rights eras, which many confederate monuments were. most of those monuments weren't created to commemorate unbiased history...it was to celebrate their racist points of view to discourage civil growth (there was a spike in confederate monument the year the KKK was formed, for example). the purpose of removing these monuments isn't to erase history, its to undo the racist intent they were created to satisfy. since you are an outsider i can see how you wouldn't understand that. hopefully, this helps.

The Rebel Flag and all of these Confederate monuments have nothing to do with American history if you look back into history. One will see that America broke apart, and that flag represented a whole different country technically. Since the south broke apart from the north. Also, the problem with this confederate stuff is the history and racism that will haunt the Confederate legacy forever. that is why they watch what you do, because it will eventually come back to haunt you in the past, and this confederate stuff is a prime example.

    • @WFJ1974
      @WFJ1974 5 лет назад +3

Number one rebel flag had nothing to do with the Confederacy in the first place. The rebel flag was West Virginia regiment Battle Flag it was never flown as a flag for the Confederacy. Civil War and the Confederacy has a lot to do with American history just as the Revolutionary War had a lot to do with American history. As far as the South being racist and owning slaves the North had slaves and we're just as racist. George Washington had slaves Benjamin Franklin had slaves General Grant head of the Union Army took his slaves in the battle. Two northern states would never even recognize the Emancipation Proclamation. There were northern states that only freed slaves after they turn the age of 18. These monuments such as Stonewall Jackson should stay up Stonewall Jackson was a hero to a lot of slaves. Stonewall Jackson educated African-Americans at the time that it was actually illegal in Lexington and in Virginia to even educate a Slave. He started the Lexington Presbyterian Sunday School where he taught in African Americans who were slaves how to read and write after he join the Confederacy and went to war he would send money home so that those African Americans could afford to buy Bibles and hymnals. In my opinion Thomas Stonewall Jackson was a big part not only the Confederacy but American history and African American history. there was nothing racist about that man. People need to learn their history studying and read get educated before that make comments.

I'm Turkish and I have great interest in history. I'm really having difficulty understanding Americans tearing down statues of historical figures. I thought Robert E. Lee was personally against fighting but went back to Virginia because Lincoln was raising an army to invade his own country. He was a wise man and a great general. He wasn't a slavery supporter. I also personally believe that slavery would die out itself when the south would have equal industry compared to north. You simply can't ask a country to stop it's industry all at once. Maybe the North should have invested more in South before becoming hypocrites half way through the war. If it was really about slavery, why didn't Lincoln issue Emancipation Proclamation before he raised an army with defined purpose of "Rooting out rebellion"? And don't even present Fort Sumpter as an example because Lincoln was clearly fortifying it to antagonize the southerners.

As a former Virginia resident, I'm looking forward to see how far both the Virginia's Tourist
Industry and Virginia's Quality of Living tank when they start tearing down
monuments. Since the Virginia Tourist Industry has little to offer outside the state's
history, Virginia's downward spiral into poverty/ high taxes due to the loss of
tourist dollars should be quick and painless- if not an enjoyable one to watch.
As a current North Carolina resident, the thought of North Carolina's tourist
industry picking up on behalf of Virginia's Governor Ralph Northam pleases me
especially if the average North Carolina tax payer receives a tax break on
behalf of Virginia and the state's tax payers. This situation will be a win-win
for everyone involved. North Carolina experiences an increased cash flow from
its booming tourist industry while Virginia gets to wonder what went wrong. On
that final note, if Democrats really want to tear down monuments to "White
Supremacy" let's start where white supremacy began "The Cash Cow that
forms the Historic Triangle of Colonial Williamsburg/ Jamestown/ and
Yorktown." Let's really show who is boss by tearing down every historical
monument residing in Virginia (Including Colonial Williamsburg, the Natural
Bridge, Monticello, and University of Virginia) thus bankrupting the state in a
fashion that it deserves. North Carolina Tourist Industry and Tax Payers are
    counting on it.

Not a single one of my ancestors was a Confederate nor a slave owner. Most of those monuments were erected by widows and orphans and public donations, while the grandest of the statues nearly all commissioned through public subscription, and they once played the biggest part of the healing of a very divided nation. The South was and still is the most patriotic region of Americans, based on military enlistments from all the world wars. Polls show the majority of Americans don't favor removing any of these statues, though many should be reconsidered for moving to a museum, battlefield park or cemetery. But it's absurd for the former Confederate capitols like Richmond and Montgomery to remove theirs and try to kill their tourist industry.

This made all Confederate Veterans equal to U.S. Veterans. Before that, under U.S. Public Law 810, Approved by the 17th Congress on 26 Feb 1929 the War Department was directed to erect headstones and recognize Confederate grave sites as U.S. War dead grave sites. Re-purpose them to teach the history of the defeat of Confederacy on the battlefields. Lots of Civil War parks have very few markers, use them to mark surrender sites, retreat routes, headquarters, etc. The Civilian monuments are not as easy to find homes for. Some might go in museums. I was long undecided whether Confederate monuments in the South should be preserved or not. I mean, any decent person would agree that the Confederates were scum... but still, monuments are history, and I don't support the destruction of art or statues no matter how much of a scumbag the subject of the piece was.
We know Nero was a tyrant, we known Henry VIII was voted as the worst monarch in British history for a good reason, we know Genghis Khan was infamous for a reign of terror... but despite all of those personas being absolute degenerates, I doubt anyone would suggest demolishing their monuments, right? I mean, the presence of their monuments does not in any way represent that anyone would like to resurrect them into power today.
However, here is why I've come to the conclusion that Confederate monuments should be demolished. Not only that, but I think the Confederate flag (or flags) should be banned from official use... just like the Nazi flag is not waved around Germany.
See, while the historical figures I've mentioned are well in the past and have no modern ideological claim... the Confederate ideology is still out there. I mean, it started not long after the end of the Civil War, and lasts to this day, the neo-Confederate ideology and the "Lost Cause" nonsense.
I've done my research in various political Facebook groups, and I was horrified to see how much there is an attempt to justify what the Confederacy did. Neo-Confederates attempt to push the "Lost Cause" narrative, claiming the Civil War was not about slavery but about "state rights"... they just omit the part how the "right" they were talking about was mainly the "right" to hold other beings as slaves.
All of the slave women raped, all of the men whipped, all of the abuse, the chains, the humiliation... nope, neo-Confederates conveniently cut it out.
And that ideology never stopped! The lynching continued well into the 20th century. In the 1920, the KKK peaked 6,000,000 members, that was Confederate ideology right there. The horrific segregation laws continued into the 1960s, and same was with the anti-miscegenation laws that literally had humans sent to prison for having interracial relationships.
But that didn't stop in the 1960s! In 2017, a violent rally took part in Charlottsville, Virginia, called "United the Right Rally" against the removal of Confederate monument. In the rally, Confederate and Nazi flags were waved.
The reason I support the removal of Confederate monuments is because that ideology, the horrific and vile ideology of slavery and the subjugating of other human beings, is still there! The dehumanisation of black people is still there. Those monuments are part of that ideology and are used to preserve it.
And you know what? I honestly understand where neo-Confederates are coming from... it's not easy to admit your ancestors were lowlife scum who fought to preserve slavery, so you create a new narrative. Will the descendants of Nazi soldiers try the same in the future? Who knows.
And yes, I know not all Confederate soldiers were for slavery, some were drafted against their will... and? So were many soldiers serving in the German Army in WWII. Your point is...? The ones with a moral compass deserted, and the ones with a moral compass and courage did what the great Newton Knight and the Free State of Jones did, and resisted the Confederate regime.
Those monuments need to be demolished, pretty much as we don't have Nazi monuments around today.
No black child should have to walk past a monument which was the gathering point of those who violently lynched his great uncle, and which still serves as a gathering point for those who lament the loss of the Confederacy and lament the abolition of slavery.

I love all races and it would be great if we could all just get along. If I remember your education right African kings sold their own people to slavery. Now if you want to condemn slavery customer the men who first sold them to the merchants.

Both of which are weak arguments. What's does a dead guy have to do with a statue being taken down? Because slavery is bad Confederate stautes are bad. Therefore all statues are bad because they represent slavery. Also being prideful of something doesn't make ones postion justified. Anyways I know you werent commenting on that. The United States enforced slavery for 85 years under the US flag, while the Confederacy and slavery under the Confederate flag only lasted... 5 years.
If any flag represents slavery more, it's the United States flag, and United States monuments to the founding fathers who were slave owners, and could of freed their slaves at any time if they actually believed the rhethoric they spouted. The United States is hated, and it's time it came down from our government building, and the whole US regime thrown on the trash heap of history, just like Stalinist Russia, Nazi Germany, and the Khmer Rouge rule.
Every time I have to look at a United States flag flying, with it's stars corralled into a corner by prison bars, and see that evil panopticon police state eye atop the pyramid of slavery on the dollar bill, I am completely offended and appalled that I live in a country that tolerates these blatant symbols that are overt affronts upon freedom and liberty......

You don't know much about history, because the Native American tribes had a huge civilization here in North America. They built some pretty large cities all across America. Just off the top of my head... Etowah Mounds, Mesa Verde / Puye Cliff Dwellings, Cahokia Mounds, Taos Pueblo.
You can't just take someone's land or territory if it doesn't belong to you... that's fundamental to all law. You don't have a country, you only have a back yard and a front yard... that doesn't mean I can come and take them both.

I am not arguing the right or wrong of the matter, just the fact.
If you jump around a camp fire wearing a loin cloth and your biggest technological advancement is propelling a sharp stick with a bit of twine.... Then a guy with a repeating rifle that can reach out and talk to you at a 150 yards ➕, and he knows how to use it to boot..... If it wasn't done by the big bad boogie, I mean white man then it probably would have been the Spaniards, or somebody else. The outcome of that is history, PERIOD. Same with slavery, it happened. Good, bad, doesn't matter! It happened and can't be changed till the Indians invent a time machine.
      So get over it!
All we can do is remember the past, learn from it, and do not repeat it. Which is a compelling reason to keep these monuments out so the next generation will see them and ask their parents what they mean.
I am even less apologetic about this statement.
IF YOU HATE THIS COUNTRY than either take it over or MOVE THE F**K OUT!!!
