For me, Kone is too high on this list. He’s got great potential and has had some terrific games, but then he goes missing. Davies should be higher than Kone as should Shaffelburg who consistently impacts the game and delivers important goals. Davies could be much better, but his quality is truly impactful.
This is a great list! Jonathan David and Allistar Johnston being one and two is quite obvious. I saw a comment in this section critiquing Johnston's year. He was one of Canada's best at Copa America, and he is one of best players in the Scottish Premiership. There is nothing you can do to critique him for. In my unpopular opinion, if there is a player on this list that is underappreciated, it's not Shaffelburg, but it's Cornelius. I am also disappointed on how Eustaquio is being utilized at Porto. He has been there for a while and he is being used as a rotational player like Caldwell stated. Maybe it's time for him to find a new challenge.
He's actually one of the best players in Celtic and the Scottish Premiership. Allistar is also one of their captains. Give it time, and Johnston's stock is rising.
Wow, Steven Caldwell, your ratings are so inconsistent! On one hand you say that Shaffelburg, rated #7, was lower down on your list because of his inconsistency with his club team; but then you have Kone at #4, despite his getting benched with his club team. Without any doubt, Shaffelburg was the better player for Canada this year. Remember, we are not talking about long term potential here. Using your club criteria, Max Crepeau, who was excellent in the Copa, should have been listed lower at 9th or 10th, not to mention the fact that he was benched for Canada's last 2 matches too. Your rating of Alphonso Davies @ #5 is absolutely ridiculous!!! You said that he hasn't had a great year. What are you talking about??? His coach at Bayern has consistently said that Davies has been terrific! Marsch clearly has asked Davies to play a much more defensive game & he has done a wonderful job of it. Forget about being flashy!!! Since Canada lost vs the Netherlands, Canada has had 6 clean sheets. Apart from allowing 2 goals in 2 games vs Messi & Argentina, Canada only allowed more than 1 goal once to Uruguay & they only got their 2nd goal very late in that match. Their defence was one of the best in the Copa & is the best in CONCACAF too, in large part because of the excellent defence of Alphonso Davies. Listen, I love Alistair Johnston's game as much as anyone; but there is no way in hell that he rates above Alphonso Davies, or Moise Bombito. You were really showing your Scottish bias there! Steven Caldwell, you were really off your game big time on making this list.
Do you feel better that you got that off your chest? AJ's played a blinder this year!! Alphonso's always injured or driving impaired.Wise up and stick to hockey.
If there is a player who I think is Canada's best in terms of the national side, it's Bonbito for me. I do think he's a little harsh on Davies because, in my opinion, he's Bayern's best defender. It's between him and Upamecano at Bayern, but Davies gets the edge for me. I also think you have undervalued Allistar Johnston. He's one of the best players in the Scottish Premiership, and he was arguably Canada's best players at Copa America.
@Luso00_ , actually I don't undervalue Alistair at all. I think that he is very good & I love his style of play; however, we gave to also acknowledge that the Scottish league soccer is not at the same level as the German, French, Italian & Spanish leagues. I would definitely rate Davies & Bombito (and David) ahead of him. And if it was only for performances with the National team in 2024, I would place Shaffelburg ahead of him too. I also think that Eustaquio is much more valuable to this team than many give him credit for. At this point, people are starting to take him for granted
@jrcanuck1 A lot of leagues are like the Scottish league, where there is a gap between the championship contenders and then the rest. Celtic is a quality team whether the league is subpar. Is PSG weak because they dominate France almost every year? No, but they have to perform to stay on form. Alistair is probably a top 2-3 player at Celtic. If you think he needs to move on, that's your opinion. But his performances are clear, and he deserves the recognition. If we're talking about Eustaquio, I think his club playing time and performances are affecting his performance on the national side. He's been playing in Porto for some time, and he's a rotational player. Eustaquio needs first-team minutes.
David, Davies and Kone all moved to Canada in their formative youth years so not sure what that has to do with your point here. They all have spent the majority of their lives living in Canada. That is what is called immigration.

My vote is for “cheeky boy”. Who you say? Visualize a photo of Alistair Johnston when he was 10 years old. I’ll bet he was a mischievous cheeky boy.
This is a great list!

Need more of these two! One soccer tries but these two have been there and done that.Proper analysis 👍Merry Christmas,Fvck the Huns.🍀
top 5 shld be 5. crepeau or shaff, 4. johnston, 3. bombito, 2. david and 1. davies. always davies number 1, he is world class
Niko Sigur !
Johnston?? Really? One of the players who always struggles. If he’s that good, why aren’t European clubs going after him.
Thats where he is.... Nominated for best defender in the world too

@sean367 , LoL! I wasn't talking about hockey; but then you may not understand the difference.
I just told the truth.
You should try it some time.

How many of them are actually Canadian though?
I mean they live in Canada so that means they are.
Only three of them were born outside Canada, and one of them, Jonathan David, was actually born in New York-he's American, lol.
David been in Ottawa since he was 5, Davies in Edmonton since 6, and Kone in Montreal since 7
Ya this narrative doesn’t apply to the Canadian team. Look at the U.S. squad or other national teams if u wanna play that game.
David, Davies and Kone all moved to Canada in their formative youth years so not sure what that has to do with your point here. They all have spent the majority of their lives living in Canada. That is what is called immigration.
