  • Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen, both are my favorite space sims, and in this video I am comparing the Aegis Gladius in Star Citizen with the Eagle Mark II in Elite Dangerous, not intending to say which game is better the other, but to simple express my opinion about which game is better at what. Enjoy!

On the point of details on the ships themselves, all ED ships have heat dissipation panels that light up depending on heat level (that's what those two large oranges pieces on top of the Eagle are for). Lots of details on ED aren't immediately visible or notable, but there are a lot of them. The Anaconda, for example, has a unique damage model, where individual panels can break on damage (all other ships get the more generic treatment, with battle scars from laser and bullet being basically decals). It's just a pity that only the Anaconda gets this treatment.
Also, ED ship's internals actually exist inside the models. The site Elite Dangerous Ship Anatomy (got re-hosted from teall to siriuscorp) show where each component exists on the ship itself (for large pad ones). Targeting internals individually via the sub-targeting menu will give you an idea where they are situated. The Type-10 and Type-9 for example are quite ganged up on because their Power Plants are basically in the center of the ship, meaning that even default targeting hits it quite often, while most ships offset it from center quite a lot.
And dang, the Gladius looks fine. Even while headbanging on the dock pad xD
Would try SC for it, if I could afford.
Welcome back, and hopeful for the next one!

Very detailed explanation, thank you. Indeed I've noticed even the eagle has this heat vent on top of the ship, and it opens up once in a while to dissipate the heat. Definitely looks better with this little detail on ED ships.

A starter pack for Star Citizen is only $40-$60 dollars (depending on which ship you chose). Since all ships can be earned in-game, you don't have to spend any more. There is also no monthly subscription needed.

Nice comparison! You forgot to mention that in Star Citizen, once you destroy the enemy ship, you can go back to the wreck and take its components with the tractor beam to sell or use on your own ship if they fit (they also used to have cargo you could take, but that got nerfed into the ground).

    • @Foxyloxy.X

Captain foxy is important to remember that whether you can walk a ship interior or have a camera view of detailed non-walkable interiors, it’s just a tiny part of the experience of what a space MMO is supposed to be. for example if you are touring one of the most scenic highways in America it’s not gonna make any difference whether you do it sitting down in your seat or getting up and walking from one part of the bus to the other. You’re there for the experience of the view in that example and it’s the same thing with these games, you’re there for the experience of what you see with your eyes in the galaxy.

i agre with you on the example you make. The thing i don't agree with however is the fact that the immesrion is a lot better when you have to walk through your ship (for a bigger ship than those shown here of course) to get to the pilot seat, instead of just teleporting to it, it really makes a big difference in my opinion
for example, when you go for a fps mission, you can go grab your weapon on a rack on your way out of the ship, it really makes immersion better
i do agree with you on the fact that it's obviously not the biggest part of any space sim MMO, but it shouldn't be neglected entirely

Pretty sure the panel behind the ladder on the Gladius is a connection port to download system status information or some such. At least that's what's usually in a spot like that on real fighters and while I'm not sure if Star Citizen would ever make use of it, I could see Squadron 42 using it for cinematic deck animation immersion-ness. We'll have to see though. Someday. Maybe. They really need to add step ladder platforms to pull high mounted equipment too.

I played Elite for a few hundred hours then i started Star citizen and i cant go back. Ive been spoiled by how good flying feels in sc and now even the eagle feels like a turtle. Elite for sure has a better trade system, mining is closing in but elite is still better but im a combat pilot at heart and between these two ships the comparison isnt even close. Granted ive never engineered a thing and never will or want to it just seems like a multi month fetch quest that I dont wanna do to meta game. Yes elite has far more systems planets and whatnot but in 400 hours of online play i didnt meet a single person, sc actually feels alive and im excited to see it grow as we get the addition of all those missing systems

Minor correction: players don't have to buy ARX, those are earned just by playing the game. I did buy them, but I wasn't required to.
The big one: there is absolutely no need to engineer a ship for weeks or months. As long as mats are chosen as mission rewards, you quickly *drown* in them in just 2-3 sessions. I actually lost lots of them because I was lazy to engineer the ship and had to trade up/down to have enough space for them.
Mat rewards really balances the game: by having too much money, players ends with too many ships, too quickly. But by having slower progress, they make things much more rewarding and interesting.
For example: you have 2B in cache and 5B credits worth fleet carrier; that's a lot of money. If you had picked mat rewards, you would have less money but fully engineered Eagle.
I think FD really made a perfect balance here because money was always too easy to earn. But FD *really* messed when they didn't put some sort of guide or adviser to explain it in some believable way. Like having mission givers and bartenders tell players what to focus on, instead of quick hint when loading the game (which no one reads anyway).

Making materials a secondary currency was a good idea. I haven't played Elite for a while (from what I've seen in the past couple of days I might be going back), but last time I played you could become a billionaire after just a few weeks, making credits a pretty useless measure of progression. Materials fixed that. Is engineering still RNG based so you need to keep trying over and over and over to get the effect you want, or did fdev change that aspect of it?

    • @vcc_pdr
      @vcc_pdr 5 месяцев назад

@@fnunez No RNG, or it is marginal and I didn't pay attention. It is pretty straightforward: the more mats you put, the better graded it becomes.
About currency: try to use mats as primary currency and credits as secondary. It really changed the game for me, I had many restarts before because of no challenge. With mats, the challenge is to unlock the engineers and then do lots of different types of missions to collect the mats (I prefer stealth with no killing). This approach to the game eliminated the boredom, and there is always some nearby plant that needs scanning, or some raw mat calling your name, or POI on cool looking planet...

    • @fnunez

Star Citizen doesn't qualify for a "space sim" in any way
In the category "close to realistic" spacegames, Elite Odyssey (EDO) has virtually no competition at all
EDO is a massive sandbox game with an entire 1:1 fullscale realistic Milkyway galaxy where players do have complete freedom to move around
Milkyway galaxy stats in EDO as well as in reality:
    100.000 ly diameter
4*10^11 starsystems, with planets, moons, ringsystems etc.
Orbital mechanics, simulation of gravity of celestial bodies etc.
It's a sandbox game, so we aren't bound to any storyline
    >20.000 populated starsystems with approx 275.000 stations, in human populated region "the bubble", a little spec in our galaxy, just 1000 ly across
SC is just some kind of "cyperpunk" game, less than 100 static starsystems and even scaled down, no orbital mechanics
In other way not really a spacegame, sorry to say
I can imagine that many with some knowledge about astrophysics and spacetravel as it could be in a distant future, initially inspired by Star Trek series back in the days, would value a realistic spacesim with a good simulation of our own galaxy (the milkyway), including orbital mechanics according to the Newtonian law of gravitation
    EDO is the only option
Some planets/ moons even tidal locked to their star/ planet as in reality
In EDO you would recognize stars from our visible night sky (Stellarium link), as well as known stars from the ESA mission's Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues are included
Elite Dangerous contains a vast 1:1 scale simulation of the Milky Way galaxy based on real scientific principles

So by your reasoning wing commander, privaater, freelancer are not Space games because they do not have 1:1 scaled universe and orbiting stations ?
You clearly have no clue on what you're talking about
SC is definitly a Space sim and even more since it's driven by systemic gameplay mechanics
If you want to talk about realism
Yes the ED map universe scale is more realistic but there is no atmospheric Flight in ED, there is no force reaction, there is no physicalized components , no Hull damage impacting the ship attitude
      Cargo are only virtual
ED fps gameplay is so far less realistic and detailed than the SC one
To resume : ED is more realistic by its Map universe model and scale
But SC is more realistic by its gameplay mechanics and interactions

    • @Kurayami_13
      @Kurayami_13 5 месяцев назад

so elite have a whole load of nothing which you traverse in a ship working on some sci-fi (which already disqualifies it from being SpAcE SiM) sure its space aspect is way way more realistic than SC but there is a fine balance between realism and fun and having "real" universe is clearly not fun.
as for "space games" - its in space, so its a space game. freelancer, starlancer, descents etc all of those were and are good space games without "1:1 fullscale realistic Milkyway galaxy" and "Orbital mechanics, simulation of gravity of celestial bodies etc." again - first and foremost its a GAME, game supposed to be FUN and believe it or not hardcore realism is not what most of the people consider fun otherwise both projects would just die while everyone played some suped up version of orbiter or kerbal.

11:27 this is not a lot of health... Youre going to have hard time surviving.
Armour in eagle is mostly taken in case your target has turrets installed. And you're already propably faster than most of medium/large ships, and packing enough to quickly get the small ones. I would've taken one or two module reinforcements, shield generator, and the rest would've packed with hull reinforcements. That's usually enough to stay long enough in 1v1 engagement to kill an opponent.
If I take powerfull weapons it's usually enough to get a kill before my shields drop (I'm going with 3a prismatics, with reinforces and i think hi-cap)

Let's hope CIG have the same freedom planned, cause the current system is pathetic.

      @Kurayami_13 5 месяцев назад +1

unless something seriously changed engineering in elite is "spending ugnodly amount of time doing mindnumbing stuff to get ahead of powercreep" sure you can make what you want like said eagle can be hp tank (WHY?) or armor tank (?!) or "were did that bastard with mines go?" or most logical speedster but there are always be ships better fitted to some roles so its not that much of "engineer my dream ship" unless your dream ship is some dysfunctional cadaver as "get something that at top engineering can resemble my dream ship and be viable"
SC have the same "powercreep", same problem of troops transport not being able to become "fastest smuggler in universe" (unless you use 0 point teleportation exploit) but faster and with a twist. your ship can use t3 gen but comes with t2 stock? get those credits ready and fast. you want stealth ship? stealth components exists. pedal to the metal? high power thrusters and generator plus cooling just dont be surprised that someone locked on you from a surface of planet. guns blazing? there are some mill spec components lying around. sure they cost twice as much and just activating them hurts your ingame bank account (also someone will try to steal them so not dropping shields on non secured landings EVER) but hey - guns blazing! etc etc basically unless you are really picky SC customization is enough as long as we are talking about systems and weaponry. visual customization is close to nonexistent.
