  • Stuart Twin Victoria - Some Ideas To Improve The Way It Runs. Recently I rebuilt a Factory Machined Kit of a Stuart Twin Victoria and featured it in a series called "A Collection of Stuart Engines and some other Nice Things". The Pre Machined Kit was fine but the assembly was not so good. After a complete rebuild here are some simple tasks to make it run smoothly with even exhaust beats and without making knocking or tapping noises. These techniques apply to almost all Miniature Steam Engines especially Twin Cylinder Models.

"In certain areas I will feel it necessary to say something." Sounds very familiar.

Superb..!! Great work, Keith! The Twin or Single Victoria makes a most elegantly proportioned engine.

Thanks Keith, lovely engine. Do you have any plans to run it on steam? It'sd be great to see.

I see that the two cylinders are running at about 90° apart. Why are they not set up at 180° apart? It seems o me like that would minimize the tendency for the engine to pitch left to right as viewed from the side.

Some people keep asking me this, and I really don't understand . . . . . if you put the cranks at 180 degrees, how is it going to be self starting? Have you never seen any other Steam Engines and Steam Locomotives - the pistons are double acting and they have 90 degree Crankpins.

I watched a steam engine team at our local train museum while rhey prepared this locomotive for a day's run. They inserted a large solid cylinder of lubricant into a case on one side. Is such solid lubricant which melts at heat used in model steam use?

It was probably Tallow type lubrication which isn't used in Model Steam Engines, or if it is I have never seen it.

Keith; I has become abundantly clear to me that rebuilding, finding flaws, repairing, and perfecting small steam engines is what you prefer, rather than building a new one. Thus we get a video series like this.
I don't remember if you mentioned it, but what is the horse power rating for the "Twin Victoria" ? I still think it could be the basis for a very nice "free lance" locomotive. I know, perish that thought, right?
Great series. I'm loo0king forward to what is coming. ;-)

Robert, I am pleased that it has become abundantly clear to you that rebuilding, finding flaws, repairing, and perfecting small steam engines is what I prefer, rather than building a new one. Thus we get a video series like this. Although personally the real reason is that generally I get paid money to repair customer's steam engines. Which along with the support from my kind Patrons via www.patreon.com/keithappleton allows me to have the time to make the videos (currently the videos take over 45 hours per week of my time) - not including actually doing the work. The RUclips free views come nowhere near to covering my costs....... Try it yourself and you will soon see that it is not easy, especially when I create a video almost every day, and that is why it is wholly impractical for me to carry out new builds, which also take an extraordinary long time to complete. Have you ever built one? The Victoria is a Mill type engine and as such it is unsuitable in my opinion for any kind of locomotive. I don't know how powerful it is, (2 x 1 inch bore cylinders) Stuart Models may know though ....
