  • Jason Wilhelm is considered one of Australia's most successful impoundment barramundi guides and anglers. He guided his charter clients to thousands of metre-plus barra during his 10-year professional guiding career and is now passing that knowledge to anglers who have joined his Impoundment Barra Mastery online course. We were fortunate enough to ride along with Jase to do some filming for his course and while we can't reveal all the secrets that his students are receiving here, there is definitely still some great information to help those struggling to piece to together the puzzle that is impoundment barramundi fishing.

    Great video guys. Jase is still the master and the way he talked you through that epic Barra through the timber he was hooked up too was a great lesson for everyone.

    What brand is the landing net? Looks like a beauty

      It is a Frabill and is handy in small boats but i won't be using it again on barra. Jase highly recommends that a knotless net like the Environet is far better for looking after the fish prior to release.

      It is a Frabill mate - had it for years so not sure if still available. JM Gillies were the importer back in the day. Had lots of enquiry about that net including from Tackle World Lawnton so maybe hit them up. Very handy net for storage but probably better for fish you plan to keep rather than release as it isn't knotless. Jase wasn't a fan and i will be using environet on barra from now on.

    just dont understand why people dont use baitcasters in these situations. a push of a button is quicker n easier than trying to open a bail arm wen the braid/line is under pressure. dont get me wrong i use spin reels as well but for barra n cod fishing its baitcasters all the way. really gud to c n listen to Jase agian.

    • @Coastwatch1
      @Coastwatch1  2 года назад +2

      Yeah personal choice i guess. Jase prefers spin gear - particularly for casting distance. As you saw it was foreign to me and i probably made it look harder than it should be.

      With all due respect Stephen, my experience has a much different perspective to yours when it comes to using Baitcasters. Try free spooling a BC under heavy load and heavy drag. By the time you have, it’s all over. Thread lines will always be a vastly more efficient tool when it comes to fishing standing timber. It is a very simple process to open a bail arm compared to trying to free spool a BC that has heavy drag and braid is coming off the barrel hard. By their very nature, BC’s are extremely difficult to free spool in these circumstances, not only that there is a very high percentage of over run/backlash that will see a shock break of your braid in a nano second.
      Everything I do is done for a reason, and is based on thousands of days fishing for these fish in every habitat they live in. With that said, use what works for you mate. Dave had trouble with the threadline because it was the first time he had fished for Barra this way. His frustration wasn’t due to using a threadline, it was due to the pressure associated with mastering a new method in a very short space of time. Dave knows exactly why a threadline is used in this application, I’m sure if you ask him he won’t use a BC in that arena.
      BC’s have their time and place. No question there. But the timber is the absolute last place I or my clients will ever use one, especially when casting plastics in the standing forests.

    It sure is a misery lake, worst fishing spot in the world, even worse than the Fitzroy River @ Rockhampton. Pure shitshow.
