@@Thfoxpz Yeah... that's where Outlast failed at me... too many jump scares, too many places where I didn't really felt the threat but it was there and died again and again and again... Yes, dying is part of the games and I definitely was bad at Outlast. But I couldn't really get immersed. I felt I had to mention that game. Amnesia is a masterpiece with its setting, sound design, music, simple gameplay mechanics. Physics added a lot to it too. It was a very easy game. It gave you the clue all the time if you are in danger. But also when you weren't. It gave such false sense of danger many times. It sucked me in so easily. Checked every corners, every places because I wasn't sure if it's safe. When it was obvious something is lurking, it was always dangerous but avoidable. I died twice on my first playthrough of The Dark Descent. Once by a monster, the other time was falling from height. But that's how the game felt right. Starting from beginning to end, not going back because of dying. I might sound like I like easy games. The opposite. But Amnesia was difficult because of overcoming fear. Not because it was easy to die. It felt like a seamless journey. A story unfolding, while trying to survive, solve puzzles, etc... I wish more horror games chose that way of story telling and gameplay. SOMA was fantastic too. Less scary but damn, so immersive and what an emotional rollercoaster.
@ Well said, I only finished Outlast when I played it because I wanted to see the character finally escape and I was kinda hooked into the whole Walrider Project thing, but we all know the ending, and the documents leave more questions than answers sometimes. In my opinion the DLC did way better in terms of creepiness. As for SOMA, it felt like Frictional wanted to try to raise moral questions for the players but went way overboard with it. And left the "horror" part just to sell the game to people. I still enjoyed it nonetheless, but for different reasons. Amnesia Rebirth was a way more good example of 50/50'ing a game with half horror, half moral dillemas.
The ball of light in the hallway at 15:28 gave me strong Metro vibes. it was very similar to the anomalies, except that little ball wasn’t crackling with electricity.
Man, the map was spooky from the start. I'm solidly convinced and have been for quite some time that audio may actually be more important than visuals (just slightly) for making a scary atmosphere real.
I've been tossing around the idea of horror games employing "ghost" NPCs. Not in-universe ghosts, but rather NPCs that are invisible and intangible, but still make noises the player can hear. Have them walk around near the player making noises, but go silent if they get too close, or the player gets line of sight on them. You could make them use unique sounds, making the player feel like some... *thing* is present, that they never actually see or interact with. And the NPC's random AI would mean they'd never hear it in quite the same position, each playthrough. Or the NPC could use the same sounds as actual enemies, making the player think an enemy is present, and even nearby, when it isn't. Or even let actual enemies shift in and out of this ghost mode randomly, but never attack while ghosted. So the player is never sure where the enemies actually are, or if they're even a threat right now. Oh, and maybe let these ghosts interact with physics objects somehow. Nothing special - maybe once or twice every few minutes, they apply a little force to a random object within a radius. Enough to make it topple over, or make a noise. Which would confuse the player even more, when they hear something fall off a table in another room, that they thought for sure was empty.
A lot of these sounds are roalty free spooky sounds or overused sounds from other games, really threw me out of it most of the time when I heard something. Wasn't impressed with this map. I prefer silent maps he expored before more
It definitely is. What you can't see but have to imagine will always be scarier than what you can. Especially in games. Once you see the jankiness of the NPC coming towards you, the fear is gone.
I used to think it was exaggerated when horror characters did the whole fading away huffing like 21:59, but I guess people actually do that! Also I got so upset with that final room. I spent something like 15-20 minutes just checking EVERY SINGLE ROOM thinking that there'd be something or an exit, and the only way down there to my knowledge is that one top room. Really soured the experience, glad you found the exit in good time.
20:41 From a mod I had when playing this map it made that guy in the corner actually run towards me and was like "Oh my god, gordan freeman!" I think seeing the man run from the darkness towards me was more scary than that.
i really like how you can immediately elaborate on any irrational fear you get while playing a game, often using a great deal of imagination to describe scenarios that your brain must be trying to protect you from on a primal level.
As cliche as that distant scream at 3:49 was, it definitely gave me chills and made me tear up a little bit. Definitely bone chilling and eerie as hell.

(I've toggled god mode in my instance since I find dying in a map to be distracting and immersion breaking.) But uh... The black dude that just flies at you down the one tunnel... That made my entire body have the shivers as soon as I heard and saw it coming towards me.
You should play Phasmophobia for a Halloween video. I'm sure you've heard of it, but in case you haven't, you play as a ghost hunter with various tools gadgets. It has VR support. Although its best played with friends, there are some small maps which are manageable in singleplayer.
That thing at 6:48 really gave me the jumps.. Even though The Librarian didn't see it. But it was just so creepy to see something staring from the dark doorway.
32:10 It's either the weird default Source cubemap or they didn't add any nearby cubemap objects. Source Engine's cubemaps look odd if they're captured with lights on then they're turned off; I know that from an old map I made, a (bad) recreation of a house I used to live in, with controllable lights in each room, I think.
As a person who did many playthroughs of this map, there seem to be a few things you missed (spoilers?) In one of the bathroom stalls you get transported into a narrow hallway with a crouched rebel model leading to another loud jumps are. In one of the rooms with the fuel tank, if you approach the tank, you hear banging from inside, and in the room with the windows to another room, there's a pair of glowing eyes but since you're in front you might have triggered them to disappear early. As for some explanations for a few things, the wood dragging noise is because of a plank was basically clipped into the ground with physics enabled onto it. Apparently the map is supposed to be an asylum where patients were mistreated. A lot of the ambience/soundtracks were mostly from Amnesia, I think a few from Cry of Fear and Maybe one from SOMA. As for the two entrances to the lower maze, I did some noclipping because why not and found out the room with the locked door in the first maze was just the same as the unlocked one, hole and all. I think I've probably missed some things as well, I'm no dev of the map or anything, just someone who spends too much time on this map and Gmod in general. I wish I was able to make maps for Gmod because I would definitely takes some notes on this.
You know what I would love to see in a map like this with the audio? When you're inside a dark hallway with limited light, play a running sound toward the player and have it be out of left field. Would scare someone in VR so good. (Too good even? 😆) Awesome video anyway.
This dudes a legend I'm probs his biggest fan and have watched almost all of his videos, he is so brave and he has the audacity to play these games. I don't even have the nerve to play.
Aside from those few cheap jump scares this was a solidly-made horror map. Kudos to the creator! I think the part with the man facing the wall would have been more effective if the man instead just de-spawned as the player rounds the corner to get a better look at him, or just keep it as-is except replace the scream with something more subtle, like a whisper or a noise from somewhere else.
The spund around 9:50 iz actually from the game Imscared! It's actually the sound of the spectre inhabiting the game trying to hum the main theme of the game
I feel like maybe that corny beginning was there to disarm you lull you into a false sense of security or even slight annoyance so that when things actually take a creepy turn it lands better. If you've let your guard down a bit because you're prepared for a PNG screamer fest and then you hear a very realistic whisper in your here it feels super real because it doesn't seem like something the game would do based on what you already know and then when you realize it's completely unpredictable after you had a sense of understanding it that adds another layer of unease
Watched the first minute or so of this video, then decided to go explore it in VR with my friend. Best decision I've ever made. No horror map made me feel as much fear as this one did. And only ONE jpeg scare. Impressive.
I’m probably reaching but I remember playing this map for the first time and getting super scared when I heard chains and crying going downstairs like somebody was going upstairs This map is pretty immersive and puts noises in the right places it made me feel like there was real ghosts lost here
I’d like to think that there are two devs on this map, one who understands the intricacies of the flashlight as well as placing sound ques just beyond the players line of sight, and the other who thinks the only way to scare the player is with a loud noise accompanying a jpeg of Jeff the killer.
Amnesia soundtrack is thrilling, this one is probably one of the creepiest and disturbing. I think it was in Justine addon rather than in original game 20:42 is just ugh
Though I really like Amnesia's soundtrack, I don't think it worked amazingly well here. It can be a tad overwhelming in several areas of the map, as well as kinda feel like like it doesn't really 'match' the feel the map wants to give. Amnesia's ambience and soundtrack is much more suited for gothic horror, and when you put it up against certain environments in this map, it kinda clashes I guess? Other than that, the map could've probably been much creepier with little to no ambient sound, just silence. Though if you haven't listened to Amnesia's OST, I strongly recommend it! A lot of it is very atmospheric and at times even a little cozy, in a strange way.
In half life 2, that Huffing and panting sound affect might have played in RavenHolm for their there are all sorts of horror noises and creepy sounds. Most of the Valve Horror sounds come from that one Chapter of HL2.
Also If i am correct, Cry of fear was made using something to do with Valve so those sound affects may have been heard in COF, but may have originated from HL.
you totally should try *INFRA* . it will be fitting for your channel . not only it's a source game but also it got the best feel real environment out there. I know you do urban exploration irl, so i am sure you will love INFRA .
For a map recommendation, I'd give the map Runaway : 911 a try in VR if you haven't played it already, it's a very well made horror map with puzzle elements in it and I think it'd make a good video.
the random woman crying was coming from inside the broken cabinet its pretty realistic and is actually scary when you realize it can jump out at any second
hi librarian. i had an idea. next time you go on another irl exploration of abandoned stuff, bring a detailed dummy to leave behind, best place to leave it would probably be facing a corner. that way the next explorers get a laugh. or a fright.
I love maps that just suggest that they MIGHT do something, like when you are in a hallway/maze and you can just barely make out footsteps coming up behind you, but you aren't 100% sure they are footsteps.
While watching this I thought "Damn he might enjoy Lost in Vivo" and then I saw that one of the suggested games was Lost in Vivo from your video yesterday I hope I was right
I remember playing gmod a long time ago and every time i launched the game it would be luigi and mario talking in the menu about something and it really horrified me as a kid, i still have no idea what its about and it honestly still scares to this day
The scary part in your videos is when your walking in a dark abandon place then you just stop talking and point your flashlight everywhere and we don’t know what’s going on
I want a game where your a burgalar, good sound, good graphics, looting a house for money. There’s nothing actually in the house, just ambient sounds. There’s no music. There’s no time limit, you can leave when you want. Just a dark, quiet house that you’re looting. The floorboards creaking.
I saw the name of the map on the upload and immediately downloaded it and tried it before watching you. As I watched you move closer to the scary bits a big CREEPY sadistic grin crawled across my face. _If you noclip out of the map there's a room that's well lit._ *DON'T FLY THROUGH IT.* You should host a scary haunted map on a server, there's one I tried called "The Accident" it's very long and I couldn't complete it. But it's quite eerie and very deep. It would probably make for an hour+ of gameplay.

Source Engine's cubemaps look odd if they're captured with lights on then they're turned off; I know that from an old map I made, a (bad) recreation of a house I used to live in, with controllable lights in each room, I think.
25:41 I'm pretty sure you're in Silent Hill now...
As a person who did many playthroughs of this map, there seem to be a few things you missed
(spoilers?)
In one of the bathroom stalls you get transported into a narrow hallway with a crouched rebel model leading to another loud jumps are.
7:34 scared the absolute shit right out of me goodness
The scream that sounds from when the wood on the door breaks is actually from a creature from the game SOMA, made by the same people who made Amnesia.
You know what I would love to see in a map like this with the audio? When you're inside a dark hallway with limited light, play a running sound toward the player and have it be out of left field. Would scare someone in VR so good. (Too good even? 😆)
Awesome video anyway.
that ambient music is from the amnesia the dark descent game! you should totally play the frictional games collection! you wont regret it.
IMO I'd stick to Dark Descent and Soma. The two Amnesia sequels, especially the second one, were pretty boring.
the doors plank breaking followed with a unidentifiable screech and quick running is scary
This dudes a legend I'm probs his biggest fan and have watched almost all of his videos, he is so brave and he has the audacity to play these
games.
I think i just found the perfect youtuber because your voice is not annoying, your gameplay is amazing and the reactions are genuine
The spund around 9:50 iz actually from the game Imscared! It's actually the sound of the spectre inhabiting the game trying to hum the main theme of the game
the multiple mentions of "(being the) horror movie white guy" really makes this funnier
I watch your vr horror vids like a TV show. Keep them coming. :)
I just crapped myself at 21:58 my I feel u dude
Considering Cry of Fear is known for having lifted a lot of sound effects from Half Life 2, it's funny that's where you know them from
For those of you wondering the ambient sound on 14:42 it’s amnesia dark decent- basement storage
Watched the first minute or so of this video, then decided to go explore it in VR with my friend. Best decision I've ever made. No horror map made me feel as much fear as this one did. And only ONE jpeg scare. Impressive.
I love that they used audio from SOMA. Truly some of the scariest sounds in any situation.
I’m probably reaching but I remember playing this map for the first time and getting super scared when I heard chains and crying going downstairs like somebody was going upstairs This map is pretty immersive and puts noises in the right places it made me feel like there was real ghosts lost here
I’d like to think that there are two devs on this map, one who understands the intricacies of the flashlight as well as placing sound ques just beyond the players line of sight, and the other who thinks the only way to
scare the player is with a loud noise accompanying a jpeg of Jeff the killer.
10:20 isn't that Amnesia music? :) nice video btw
Loving your content!
Amnesia soundtrack is thrilling, this one is probably one of the creepiest and disturbing. I think it was in Justine addon rather than in original game
20:42 is just ugh
This video/map has some great examples of how various rooms can strike different kinds of fears in our hearts, *_and I love it!_*
I like the SOMA proxy sounds that is used. Scary as hell dude.
A lot of it is very atmospheric and at times even a little cozy, in a strange way.
great content, brother! love to have your insights on horror in general because it feels like more than just a let's play.
That is the fastest I’ve ever seen someone turn😂
Fastest turn in the abandoned west
3:33, my man turned into flash, also you made me fucking die man 💀
Completely forget this game is almost 2 decades old sometimes
good video!
also thanks for putting the links in description, unlike some people.
it's he second video i watch from him and he is my number 1 youtuber
In half life 2, that Huffing and panting sound affect might have played in RavenHolm for their there are all sorts of horror noises and creepy sounds. Most of the Valve Horror sounds come from that one Chapter of HL2.
Also If i am correct, Cry of fear was made using something to do with Valve so those sound affects may have been heard in COF, but may have originated from HL.
The fact that you probably missed many jumpscares and only heard them is what made the map feel even scarier
you totally should try *INFRA* . it will be fitting for your channel . not only it's a source game but also it got the best feel real environment out there. I know you do urban exploration irl, so i am sure you will love INFRA .
For a map recommendation, I'd give the map Runaway : 911 a try in VR if you haven't played it already, it's a very well made horror map with puzzle elements in it and I think it'd make a good video.
3:45 he turned and stopped so fucking quickly
Oh the good old Amnesia ambience, brings back some fine memories! Keep doing what your doing my dude!
I think you should play Monstrum :D the monster is so freaky and has good atmosphere too
Love these kinds of videos! Keep up the awesome work bro!
I gotta say, he really does do a good job of mentioning everything you're thinking about...
the random woman crying was coming from inside the broken cabinet its pretty realistic and is actually scary when you realize it can jump out at any second
hi librarian. i had an idea. next time you go on another irl exploration of abandoned stuff, bring a detailed dummy to leave behind, best place to leave it would probably be facing a corner. that way the next explorers get a laugh. or a fright.
I love maps that just suggest that they MIGHT do something, like when you are in a hallway/maze and you can just barely make out footsteps coming up behind you, but you aren't 100% sure they are footsteps.
You got the full Roblox horror game experience with this one
this dude is really underrated his content is so good i love watching these videos they are so entertaining keep up the good work man :)
While watching this I thought "Damn he might enjoy Lost in Vivo" and then I saw that one of the suggested games was Lost in Vivo from your video yesterday
I hope I was right
I feel like you'd get a kick out of Doom 3 in VR or this little indie game called IMSCARED (Not VR compatible sadly but the tricks make up for it)
The start is very dying light feeling, anyone who’s played that game and the part about getting to old town understand what I’m saying.
Its a very good game
I love when they place sounds like "PSSSSST" or just one word behind objects, that really raises my hairs
I remember playing gmod a long time ago and every time i launched the game it would be luigi and mario talking in the menu about something and it really horrified me as a kid, i still have no idea what its about and it honestly still scares to this day
4:17
This hit me so differently, i haven't laughed like this in a while.
Good shit. Glad i found this channel 2 weeks ago. 🤣
The scary part in your videos is when your walking in a dark abandon place then you just stop talking and point your flashlight everywhere and we don’t know what’s going on
Im convinced the first part of the map was an attempted to subvert expectation and put you in a false sense of security
"time to become a white guy...!" is one of the most realistic things youve said so far.
"That sounded like some rattling bones" that sounded like a lightbulb dying. Which it was :P
What was that little turn at 12:31 when the orb flew by?
Man, at this point I'd really like to see a T-shirt with a Glock on it that simply says "Safety Glock".
im entertained by the content this man makes
Most of the sounds on this map are from Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Really good though.
I want a game where your a burgalar, good sound, good graphics, looting a house for money. There’s nothing actually in the house, just ambient sounds. There’s no music. There’s no time limit, you can leave when you want. Just a dark, quiet house that you’re looting. The floorboards creaking.
Good sound
i love these kind of videos, keep it up
damn i love your channel
These maps are so well crafted. Especially the liminal space ones. They have me getting scared by RUclips premium ads 😂
I saw the name of the map on the upload and immediately downloaded it and tried it before watching you.
As I watched you move closer to the scary bits a big CREEPY sadistic grin crawled across my face.
_If you noclip out of the map there's a room that's well lit._ *DON'T FLY THROUGH IT.*
You should host a scary haunted map on a server, there's one I tried called "The Accident" it's very long and I couldn't complete it. But it's quite eerie and very deep. It would probably make for an hour+ of gameplay.
Also; I feel you in the geriatric knees my guy. Love your vids ♥️🏳️🌈
In the middle video an ad popped up and this scared me more than everything else
