  • THINGS TO KNOW WHEN CHOOSING AN ULTRASOUND SCHOOL OR SONOGRAPHY PROGRAM
    Welcome back to the channel, RUclips fam! Thank you so much for coming back! If you're a newbie, thank you so much for clicking on this video! I'm Geselle, a registered ultrasound technologist who works in a hospital and outpatient setting. I strive to create videos to spread PAWSitivity and spread ultrasound awareness! I hope you find some of my videos helpful especially if you're on your own ultrasound journey!
    Today's video consists of 5 things you NEED TO KOW before CONSIDERING and CHOOSING an ultrasound school! I hope you find this information helpful because many people do not do their research prior to going into this field and end up with regret or having a hard time after school finding a job. Use these tips and information to help you find a school that fits you!
    ‼️ Things you need to understand when choosing a school: ‼️
    Ultrasound school costs time, money, and effort.
    It is very competitive, some take less than 10 people, some take once a year.
    Some programs have waiting lists.
    There are many ultrasound programs, both non-accredited and accredited.
    I suggest using CAAHEP.org to find an accredited school near you.
    There are three different options you can go toward: certification, associate's degree, and bachelor's degree.
    There are three ultrasound types of concentrations: echo, vascular, general (which includes OB, small parts and abdomen and abdomen)
    In the USA, you must be able to sit for ARDMS to become a "registered diagnostic medical sonographer, RDMS" / "registered diagnostic cardiac sonographer, RDCS" / "registered vascular technologist, RVT"
    ARDMS board exam types: SPI (physics), abdomen, ob/gyn, vascular, pediatric, echo, fetal echo, musculoskeletal, breast
    When doing research, find others who went to the school you're looking at and ask them how it went for them/ if they were able to sit for board exams afterward/ and how long it took to find their first job.

    Hi Geselle! Neurosonography really sparked my interest, but the ARDMS website says that specialty was put on hold several years ago. Do neuro positions even exist anymore? And if I wanted to get the most neuro opportunities, should I do RDMS or RVT? Any and all info on neuro would be so much appreciated! Thank you for all that you do!!

    • @lolgeselle
      @lolgeselle  3 года назад +1

      Hi! If you want to neuro you typically need to work in a hospital with a neuro ICU! They do TCDs. I don't know of many private offices or outpatients that offer neuro. Neuro is usually done where there is a trauma center as well. So you'll have to go somewhere where they can train you in it! Your best bet is to learn general/vascular. And get trained in TCDs, however, call different hospitals and clinical sites around you to see who has neuro in their locations. I would also ask your mentors or advisors from your programs. :) Thanks for watching!

If you already have a bachelors you don't need to go to an accredited school, but it will help to go to an accredited school. • @lolgeselle
      @lolgeselle  3 года назад +2

      Hi! You’ll have to weigh your pros and cons for this certificate program. So long as they allow you to sit for SPI, ARDMS, specialty exams.. and they get you to becoming a registered sonographer, then that’s a choice up to you! But I’ve seen many who already have a bachelors go for the Associates route or return for another bachelors. It’s all up to you! Idk how certificate programs work with ARDMS but most people will tell you to go with the degree. Majority of jobs in the USA just requires you to be registered in ARDMS. Is a certificate can get you to becoming ARDMS, I don’t see why not. Try to find someone who’s gotten a certificate! Hope this helps.

      It depends on the school and program. My program for example had classes twice a week, and the classes were only 1.5 hours long. We only had 5 ultrasound classes. Other programs are all day from like 8am-3pm.. it just depends. Many of them are equivalent to a full time job.

    Do departments typically sponsor additional certifications for technologists, or is it something the technologist opts for on their own? I'm curious because I would like to end up with at least two specialties. Thank you!

    • @lolgeselle
      @lolgeselle  4 года назад +2

      Hi!!! It’s usually up to the technologists! Some hospitals and companies will not pay for the registries, some will give you refunds or some will pay a portion if you pass.. it depends on your place of employment! But typically it’s up to you if you want to go for more registries! I always say, GO FOR IT!

    what do you think the average of tuition for this field ? how much did you pay for your schooling? I’ve been looking at multiple schools and they are all different!

    • @lolgeselle
      @lolgeselle  3 года назад +2

      yes! they're all different ranges. I think it depends on the school and what you get out of it. If you know you can get in and become successful, quicker.. sometimes those are more expensive. But then again it depends on the degree type and where you will be attending. I went to a university and it was cheaper than a private school. Some private schools are easier to get into than a university so some people have to spend more. It just truly depends on you and what you see as your pros and cons. Average sounds like anywhere between 10,000-30,000. The higher ends being 40,000 (private schools).

      You’ll have to check with that program’s policies on how you can take ARDMS afterwards. I’d say email them to find out the steps if you can sit for ARDMS SPI after taking ultrasound physics. CAAHEP is the more known accreditation, but I know there are others. Just gotta find out if anyone else has graduated from that school and also has been successful.

    Hi Im a registered ARRT Radiologic technologist. Two questions, one is it harder to find a job if only taking the 2 years cardiovascular option and two, should my schooling be shorter because i am an X-ray tech. Thanks

    • @lolgeselle
      @lolgeselle  3 года назад +1

      Hi! The thing that will make it hard is the job options and cities. You have to do your research to see who has openings and what not. I believe schooling can be less if they take your prior classes but you still have to get your degree in sonography! Whether it be associates or bachelors and also take the ARDMS board exams.

      Hi Daniela. So long that you’ll be able to sit for ARDMS board exams and be able to register in SPI, and a specialty board exam, I don’t see why not. A registry in ARDMS is the most important aspect of getting hired in the US. Have you spoken with your program directors or know/ been in contact with anyone who’s already been through the program?
