- Most ancient board games, and indeed most abstract strategy games, are for two players. The game of Mehen "the coiled snake" appears to be the oldest multi-player board game ever discovered. The game is will over 4000 years old and embodies aspects of early Egyptian religion.
There are many and varied guesses about how the game was actually played in the time of the Pharaohs. We included a likely set of rules in the Peg Pastimes version of the game, but more can be found in your local library and of course on line. Speculative rules range from straight race games to more complex games of position and capture.
This is part of our "Games of Ancient Egypt" set which includes four other ancient games from the area. You can get your copy of the game here:

If you wrote a book on the history of games I would buy it.
Love you videos and history on the game.
Actually, I did! Check on my website and click the "buy now" button!
@@NewVentureGames is that the Peg Pastimes one?
@@me_fault Yes indeed it is. I will be working on a sequel later this year, too.
@@DavidMMcCord BTW - Peg Pastimes volume 2 is done, plus a biography of Alex Randolph, one of the great game designers of the 20th century.
This is the clearest explanation of this game I've heard.
How interesting! Imagine all the wonderful games that have been lost over time
That's what most of this RUclips Channel is about - ancient, antique, vintage and obscure games that most people never heard of! Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@NewVentureGames You're doing an awesome job!
Love these ancient games. To bad we don't know how they originally played them.
Increible video, gracias
Great idea
New video!!!!! Looks interesting
Great video as always. But why is there 7 minutes of black screen at the end?
Oops. Thanks for catching that! I just fixed it... might take a while for RUclips to post the trimmed version.
I've seen a break down of Men (know that's not the right name) using concepts from Dr Nim. But the guy who did it just called it his dowel game. You won if you picked up the last dowel.
Have you seen what the arguments about what the Phaistos Disc is?
What is the name of the second board game from the intro with apes and a temple?
It's 'Apex Escape from the Apes' by NewVenture Games. I don't know if it's out of print or just a concept.
Does this same relate to the Phaistos Disc?
I don't think there's any relationship there.
What is the name of the game that has the 4 lions facing each other, that was in the painting?
six lions? they are the Mehen pieces
@@me_fault, thank you.
