My short Story with Huub in German and English.
In Erinnerung an Huub Janssen (Niederländischer Jazz Schlagzeuger / 1937 bis 2008). Ich filmte eines von Huubs legendären Drumsolos in den 90´er Jahren und möchte mit diesem Video an ihn erinnern. Hier eine überarbeitete Version mit neuem Schnitt, neuem Sound und besserer Auflösung. Huub war mein Freund und Lehrer (über eine Zeit von 16 zu kurzen Jahren). Heute ist mein Schlagzeugspiel & Unterricht von seinen Methoden inspiriert. Huub verstarb im Januar 2008.
In memory of Huub Janssen (Dutch jazz drummer / 1937 to 2008). I filmed one of Huub's legendary drum solos in the 90's and want to remember him with this video. Here is an edited version with new cut, new sound and better resolution. Huub was my friend and teacher (over a period of 16 to short years). Today my drumming & teaching is inspired by his methods. Huub passed away in January 2008.

One of the best drummers ever lived
For all, who didn't know him before: long time he was the drummer of the Dutch Swing College Band, but founded also his own jazz-band. A legend in Holland. Many dutch drummers, who are still busy - for example Pierre van der Linden (Focus), were teached by him. I saw him several times. Only amazing and a drummer with an individual style!
Many times when he had free time from the swing college band he played in my father's place together with his friend Jan gorissen I adored him
Huub, after this solo you are for me the number one of the jazz drummers , followed by Buddy Rich and Charlie Antollini. Greetings from a Heavy Metal fan to heaven from Germany : - )
There is so much talk about Buddy Rich, Neil Part, Vinnie Coluita etc etc...but my oh my..then we Have Huub l, who IMO clearly just broke took things to a whole other level.
The emotion and finesse at which he articulates the dynamics and feel as he expresses himselfnwith his uncanny ability is 2nd to none and upon me coming across this video, at which I've never even heard of Huub, has just blown mind and again in my most humble opinion, the most underatted drummerbof all time. Simply put..this solo is fricken smoking!!! ❤❤👏👏 RIP Huub!!
My dad was a trumpet player and played with Huub. My first drumkit came from him.

Stick control is everything. The dude isn’t even tired nor sweating and he’s wearing a tie, long sleeve and a suit!
The best drummer I have ever seen
I'm almost ashamed to say I've never heard of this guy! :( however, that being said, I am most humbled to have come across this amazing musician! He is extraordinary, unique, and masterful. His eloquent style is beyond compare! A true joy to watch, as I have watched this video over a dozen times already! I am truly sadden to know he is no longer with us, but I will mention and post this video on my channel for all to marvel! I will try to incorporate a little of your style into my solos as homage to you. Thank Mr. Janssen! Thank you for sharing your an amazing moments with us (although posted by someone else :) )
Barry, I agree with you. Where has this guy been all my life? He is absolutely amazing and that's putting it lightly. Super clean and the technique, style, and feel makes for one monster combination and enjoyable viewing as well as listening. I will certainly be searching for more vids of his. Thanks for your comments they are spot on.

I think this is the best drumming i’ve ever seen
Heavily modified traditional grip, left stance and the stick is caught between the middle finger and forefinger, and the result is amazing. Very very difficult staging. Nowadays, only a few of the best drummers could handle this to some degree! The technique, speed and pace and precision are at a unique level.
HOW HAVE I NEVER HEARD OF THIS MAN!!!! He sounds like a heavier Rich with a little more edge. I love him

WHAT A DRUMMER!! I CAN ACTUALLY HEAR THE TEMPO AND RHYTHM AS IF OTHER MUSICIANS WERE PLAYING ALONG WITIH HIM. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I EVER HEARD OF THIS MAN AND HIS MUSIC. HE WAS SO GOOD. I REALLY ENJOYED LISTENING TO HIM. I AM SORRY HE IS NO LONGER WITH US. WITH GRATITUDE FOR HIS STUDYING SO LONG AND HARD TO BE ABLE TO PLAY LIKE THIS!

Them toms be tuned to ACTUAL pitches! Not just randomness. They're melodic in what they bring forth; not just rhythmic. It's amazing!
Wow!! Now THAT is old school showmanship. His dexterity, facial expressions, control, flair, are utterly amazing. Nice single stick roll on the snare! (No cheating by skipping it off the rim!!)

Vergeet nooit hoe hij vroeger in ons Café binnenkwam. Hij had altijd z’n stokken in z’n binnenzak. Mijn moeder was een nicht van hem en dan zei hij “Doortje mag ik drummer” en natuurlijk deed hij dat. Tafels, stoelen en alles kwam te voorschijn. Ik heb m’n hele leven fijne herinneringen aan hem. Zal hem nooit vergeten. ❤️

So clean. So, so clean. Each note was so well defined. A true lesson in hand technique. Make you go back and work on stick control or just working on very clean singles and doubles.

Buddy Rich is probably one of the most overrated drummers in the business. Janssen and Charly Antolini are much better than Rich. At least in my opinion

The Netherlands best drummer ever!!! Saw him once in Eindhoven (must have been around 95' ) , he played there with his band, it was an amazing experience to witness his greatness on the instrument.
Forget it...he leaves everyone else for dead. This cat is unbfknbleavable!!!!!
I am blown away...first time i see a solo from that crazy holland drumming god. I thoug i saw all the great drummers ....buddy rich, charlie antolini, thpmas lang, vinnie colaiuto and many more..... now i realized, huub belongs to the top drummers of all time too

Phenomenal! Buddy’s “ideas” and coordination were unsurpassed. This guy is close.
Very great playing here, he seems to sit very high over the drum kit, playing downward more than most drummers, also his arm movement is very exaggerated but gets incredible speed anyway. Love watching him play, great skill along with showmanship.

Nothing against Buddy but this man would totally outplay him in a drumbattle imo: much more variation, musicality, cleaner strokes, better sound and showmanship, more control and effortless faster than Buddy.
