    Heya Shar UK national here, the reason we get the stigma for poor food is due to post world war 2 rationing led to some weird combos/staples in British cuisine that most people don't eat anymore, other than the comfort foods like sausage and mash or beans on toast. The food that comes through however is gorgeous, a full roast dinner might just be the best versatile plate one can make, kind of like a Thanksgiving meal but better (totally not biased). We have a great food culture here but our propensity to not enjoy anything remotely positive and live our lives completely in satire means we dont like to push the idea that we have excellent and culturally diverse food here due to commonwealth ties, In Bristol, i feel like i can fall out of bed and find any food I want from around the world, insane vege/vegan scene as well! Hope you continue loving your journey and are lucky you got to be here for the Platty Joob.
    Edit: Just got further in and saw you show Fountains Abbey in Harrogate, ITS BEAUTIFUL, I also recommend Harewick house and Blennin Palace, both of which are breathtaking!

So for example, you’ve just got out of surgery and feel like shit you would probably say ‘Yeah not too bad’ about how you feel. Yeah it’s just because Americans like to complain about us but British people don’t boast so it’s not normally correct. We’re generally a pessimistic county. There’s some dodgy food because of the rationing but that’s mostly faded out. Some of the traditional comfort food from that time is still quite popular since sausage and mash and beans and toast were easy to get. So it’s probably somewhat to do with that.

      I think the food was quite bad thirty or forty years back… lots of poverty after the war, and folks got into the habit of eating quite simple stuff. ‘Celebrity Chef’ TV programs became popular from the 80s/90s though, and that’s really educated people to know what good food is. Last 15/20 years people have demanded better and better food in restaurants - so I think these days quality is really high, especially in London. Also London is a massive global city, so we have so many cuisines and choices.

  • @Bobbypinns
    @Bobbypinns Год назад +27

    Hey Sharla Brit here, the food thing comes from the WWII. The American forces got the idea that the food was terrible because it kind of was at the time. Food was rationed and in fact rationing in some lasted until 1954. So a generation of people went back to America with that impression. Given that international travel wasn't common until quite recently there wasn't a lot of first hand experience to dispel that myth in later years.
    Really glad you enjoyed your trip to the UK. Funnily enough we were in Cornwall around the same time!

    Love this! I live near Whitstable and work at one of the universities in Canterbury, so it is do strange seeing you on the streets of my home! So glad you had a nice time, and got to enjoy afternoon tea. Those books look great! There is so much history and things to see in England. Glad you got to dispel some myths about the food and weather!
    Come back again soon! 🇬🇧😍🇬🇧

    As a Brit, it's rather lovely to see the country through someone else's eyes! So glad that the weather has been kind to you. Oh, and don't forget to go to the Cotswolds while you are here - Chipping Camden, Bourton on the Water etc because while they are rather touristy, they are gorgeous. If you can manage to get to the north east, try Bamburgh for a magical coastal village with an incredible castle overlooking the sand dunes, beach and sea.

    You picked a good time to visit, the weather's been very nice there. Your remark at the end about not having that feel of finding new things in Japan after having been there so long and being so excited about exploring England for that reason is one of the key factors as to why travel is so important. I hope the rest of your trip goes as well! (I also want to have a proper creme tea one of these days. 😋)

    When I visited Britain 10 years ago (Damn!) I was also surprised by how good the food was- whether it was steak salad, Costa coffee desserts, Piri-Piri chicken, fish and chips, English breakfast, Cheddar cheese, everything was really delicious. Highly mesmerizing city too, grand and posh. Truly sad to see them split from EU, I was kind of a Brit-nut ever since I was a child.

Next time you're in the UK though I hope you get the chance to visit Scotland! Also glad you enjoyed the food. Britain gets a bad reputation but honestly the food in both England and Scotland is good (can't comment on Wales or Northern Ireland since I've never been there but I'm sure it'll be good too!)

    That was lovely - and the weather was so kind to you LOL
    The British reputation for bad food really developed in the post-War era when the country was undergoing rationing and the food was pretty bad. Dull, beige and tasteless. Obviously, there were traditional 'working class' foods like jellied eels, black pudding, toad-in-the-hole and spotted dick whose names alone sent visitors scurrying for the sick bag, but from the mid 19th century to the late 1920s, Britain's culinary reputation was up there with the French (not least because the English upper and middle classes plundered every alleyway of France for their best chefs and recipes.
    It'll be interesting to see what you make of an Indian (catch-all term for all south Asia) curry.
