My friend can relate to finding a home in Japan. She's a teacher there, has been living out there for years, is fluent in the language (reading, writing and speaking), she even has citizenship there and has no intentions on leaving but she's still considered a foreigner so it's difficult to get a place.

Fun fact: here in Germany you have the same thing, you cant find one big duvet cover, only the fitted sheets are big for the hole bed but every Person has their own duvet set. So you basically get two Single bedding

Xenophobia is definitely a thing in Japan and nobody can tell me that it should be legal for landlords to deny you just for the fact alone that you are a foreigner. That's not a thing in most if not all other developed countries and absolutely is discrimination.

But even she still has some issues when it came to finding a home according to some of her videos. They had to ask permission if she could move in with her Japanese husband because she was a foreigner. Like, it's so insane. Things are slowly changing though, in Tokyo at least. There seems to be more places for foreigners to live.
Dude I'm half Japanese, have a completely Japanese name, speak read and write the language fluently and even I have had repeated problems being accepted for an apartment. One of the many reasons I'm thinking of leaving Japan. There's no future for a country that overall doesn't respect basic human rights one of which is to not be discriminated against due to ethnicity.

I went from a queen sized bed to a twin but my cats didn’t like that there wasn’t enough room for too. It only lasted a month before I had to get a queen bed again ahaha. They have their half and I have mine.

Omg the window corner in the apartment. I feel like it would be the worst and best idea to have a bed in that corner. Sleeping there while the soft rain rolls down the windows, ambient sounds galore.
Regarding the apartment process, that was one of the more disappointing aspects of moving here. Being turned down again and again simply because you are not Japanese feels and is wrong. I get that immigrants and non-natives can be flighty and carry the reputation of being bad tenants but most of us are just good people trying to earn a living and enjoy Japan. I think it is even harder for those of us who are Asian transplants since the stigma can often be more critical.
Why exactly do they discriminate? Flighty as in you will suddenly leave with outstanding back rent or something? I assume Japan is like most major cities where demands are much more than supplies? They would have no problem finding new tenants. Or they are just discriminatory like most countries, especially Japan?
I feel like this is always the argument against foreigners in Japan but how common actually is that? And by "afraid they won't pay" do they really mean afraid a foreigner will push back on the countless security deposits, thank you fees, etc.?
I'm from the UK, I have a double and my partner has a single duvet. It works out really well, I like to be a cosy burrito and he hates too much duvet. Saved a lot of arguments for sure!
When it comes to support a charity or cause, I just tend toward maybe adoptions and maybe adopt a pet because there are a lot of strays. My main social issues are clean drinking water, food scarcity, clean abundant energy, and natural disasters. And I want to support solutions for things like that.

an AirBNB I stayed in had a nitori folding couch/futon that was the _most comfortable_ thing I'd slept in ever. tragically I couldn't get one shipped to nyc :/ I still think about it on occasion...

This is stupid, but I spent 3 months looking for the "slim" spice racks and nobody had them and one day I angrily purchased a rack for glue from a hardware store. Not only does it fit 3 times more spices in a better way, but also it was 70% cheaper. Sadly it does look like a rack for industrial-strength glue (which is what it is) but I live alone and have no one. soooooo.....
My dog used to be the same way about bags. She assumed if we left the house for awhile and came back that there must be something for her in there for her, because we had been getting her a lot of stuff since we had just gotten her and were trying to figure out what she liked.

Here in Scandinavia, we use two singles so each person has their own blanket. It is really amazing.

The US has something similar. I think it's cubes and you switch them around to make it what you want. Forgot the name though.

I don't think she is? I think she's just looking for a larger space that's not in Morioka, but still in the north of Japan. That's the impression I got, anyway.
I think she's said before that one day she'll move back to Canada, but she's not ready to leave Japan any time soon
