Woodturning - Stunning Color and Grain!

- In this week’s woodturning video, I will turn a blank of Red Gum Eucalyptus into a unique bowl with square wings.
After seeing the amazing color and texture of the wood grain, I just had to leave some wings on this piece to show more of the figure!
I mount the piece initially between centers on the wood lathe, then turn a tenon and mount on my chuck.

Yeah! I really like this bowl! Eucalyptus trees also make really good firewood,which burns hot: Great on a cold day!

Awesome nice bowl.
When I see the four wings, I must think of a jacuzzi for Harry. Mount a headrest on one wing then he can put his feet up high on the opposite side. The then left and right wings are useful for putting a nice drink and a little bowl of delicious shavings on.
Remember it's getting summer and you don't want your beaver to overheat.
That is an excellent idea! Harry would love it! You're right...a sweaty beaver is the worst!

Beautiful work. Only the second piece of Red Gum I’ve ever seen. My Dad had a lifelong friend that was a carpenter. The entire mantle over his fireplace was built from Red Gum and was amazing.

Beautiful job Robert! I live in Australia and have turned some Redgum and have a dining table made of Redgum. It certainly is a beautiful wood and I think it is a little under appreciated here. Your tools must be nice and sharp as it is a very hard wood. I love what you did with the bowl, and thanks for sharing this video.

That came out awesome! Always forget to ask, what's the tool set you have with the quick change shanks?
Thanks! The modular tool handles are collets which connect to the gouges are made by Stuart Batty. As far as I know the only place to buy them at the moment is online at Woodworker's Emporium but they have limited supply as Stuart Batty has stopped manufacturing at the moment. The last I've heard is that he's looking at opening a manufacturing facility later this year in Colorado. So I've got my fingers crossed!
@@HodgePodgeWoodWorks they seem extremely handy, especially during production runs... I hate having 3 or more tools laying on my bedway... need a better solution now that I've upgrade to a proper lathe
Yeah they are especially great when it comes to sharpening. Much easier to swing the tool around and not have to deal with a cumbersome handle in the way.

PS what finish did you use?
I used General Finishes sanding sealer first (not a big fan of it, just trying to use what I've got left) and then applied Deft Gloss Lacquer.
