  • Tonya skates an amazing short program to beat Katarina Witt and take 2nd place behing Midori Ito. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Tonya was the first woman to land a 3lutz/2loop combination and it may have been in this very short program.

    Outstanding skating. She had more spunk and variety in her skating (e.g. the positions in her spins) than she had later in her career, when she became much more conservative in her approach. She seems fearless here, in marked contrast to the last few years of her amateur career (92-94).

    Tonya was judged by her upbringing that she had no control over. So sad. She's still an inspiration to me. Underscored all the time. Like being poor is a crime. Fuck that

    • @flightoflightning2505
      @flightoflightning2505 Месяц назад

      She wasnt underscored because of her upbringing, very little people knew about her abusive mom at his time, she just started her Amateur career in senior comp. The reason why she was scored low was because of reputation, you had Katarina Witt at this competition and Harding was not good at compulsory figures, so she had to start low and build her way up after figures.

    its a shame that she didnt get the marks that she deserved in the 80s because this was her prime. she spent the 90s fighting to make it big which inevitably never happened. its so sad honestly

      She became the first US woman to land a triple axel in competition in 1991, so that's pretty significant.

    She was phenomenal in the late eighties but went down hill because of her lifestyle. Even in 91 when she won the nationals and hit the triple axel she wasn’t as good as she was here. This is prodigy material and great presentation and content. Too bad she couldn’t sustain it. Shows you what happens when you surround yourself with the wrong people

    • @russiaboy58
      @russiaboy58 5 лет назад +4

      46foryounger I partially agree with your comment. There’s no denying, however, that her skating softened and became much more fluid and powerfully artistic into the early 90’s.

    • @gisazurnieden9058
      @gisazurnieden9058 5 лет назад +6

      It is much more difficult to surround yourself with the Right People who are good for you when you have been brought up by totally the wrong People (Tonya's abusive mother). I think without her influence she wouldn't have fallen for someone like Jeff Gillooly (confusing violence with love). Also it is much more difficult to stay focused and maintain the Right Lifestyle if your (home) life is as unstable as hers was. I don't mean that as an excuse for everything that went wrong in her life, but as an Explanation.

    • @lisawood365

      She was raised by a alcoholic sadistic abusive mom. She could not help but b near abusers, her father left her as a young child. You can not blame her for being with a horribly abusive parent

      She had a great choreographer up thru 92 and then that’s when you see her choreography become less inspired and not as challenging.

      She had a run in behind the scenes with a judge, never screamed at them on ice, that was for the film. I’m not sure because she wore multiple pink outfits. Could have been ‘89

    • @flightoflightning2505
      @flightoflightning2505 8 месяцев назад

      She couldnt. The short program changed the jump from loop to toe loop, forcing a different landing. Both Midori and Tonya were forced out of those combinations.

    • @barkingtree88
      @barkingtree88 8 месяцев назад

      @flightoflightning2505 requirements in the short program changed year to year, but it still would have been fun to see her do them in the free skates! She was doing triple loop/double loop in practice for the 1994 FS, but never in competition.

      @@barkingtree88 what happened to her lutz and flip jumps during the 94 season? i know they looked more powerful, but they were way more inconsistent, she even two-footed a double flip during her Olympic SP. I never thought she would screw up a double jump

    @kwadruple: I think the 3lutz/2loop combination was attempted by Kay Thomson in the 1983-1984 season, but I don't know whether she landed it in her Olympic SP as I never saw that performance. I have seen the video of her attempting it in the SP at Worlds in 1984, as far as I can remember it wasn't completely clean - maybe with a turn in between the two jumps, or something like that.

    • @e2theeyepie
      @e2theeyepie 5 лет назад

      You're correct about 1984 Worlds, there was a 3 turn in between the jumps, but she at least kept her free foot off the ice for the entire combo.

    I've commented on many other videos about her abilities and how much I love her but now I want to comment about that being the only cute costume I've ever seen her in ever. Most were just ugly, didn't fit her personality, didn't fit her, made her look washed out, were outdated and and it pisses me off. That and her hair. Yes I know why she had crappy costumes. You can be the best figure skater in the world but if you don't look the part people aren't going to see you as one. Sad. All those things put her at such a disadvantage she was behind before she began. No one not one single person stepped in and offered to help her financially, when it was so obvious she needed it, with equipment and costumes or whatever. Doesn't say much about humanity does it? No wonder she had attitude it was a constant battle. Yes and those scores. What an insult.

      Corruption. By this time, Midori and Tonya were revolutionary but were being held back or suppressed, especially Tonya. Tonya was even mistreated by her own skating federation. Overall, by this point, Midori and Tonya, with Elizabeth Manley, should have already surpassed Katarina.

      Is it harder to live under a bridge during winter, when it's really cold, or summer, when it gets really hot? Is it ever scary when cars drive over the bridge and make it rumble while you're asleep?
