    For those of you who are middle aged or older: don't be afraid to try something like this, the key is establishing a daily habit, not accomplishing some specific run time or distance. I'm 59 years old, and I started running in March of 2020. For the first few days and weeks it consisted of a comically slow shuffle for 10 minutes or so, sometimes 20. I tried to put my vanity to the side (there were always other folks passing me as they ran, sometimes even the fast walkers) and just concentrate on my breath and on extending the length of the run a little bit each day. The hardest part was actually establishing the habit to get up and out of the house each morning, as early as possible. I guarantee that if you can establish the habit your speed and distance will improve automatically. At this point I run 25-30 miles a week, generally. My average mile has gone from 15+ minutes down to around 12-minutes. Compared to others I'm still a pretty slow runner but I don't care. I treasure the hour I get to spend most mornings listening to music and running for an hour in all kinds of weather. It's made a huge difference in my physical and emotional health.

      I am in my 40s and I have started running 15 minutes and walking 10 minutes every other day. About 2 months ago I was struggling to keep up with even 5 minutes of running. I am feeling good about the increase of running time . Going to work towards making it an every day habit and increasing time as I go . I think it is great that you are doing so well can't wait to hopefully get there myself one day.

    • @johnPhilipKing
      @johnPhilipKing Год назад +1

      @@candidawojcik6356 That's fantastic, Candida! Good for you. Personally I think just establishing the habit of getting out of the house several days a week to walk or run is a notable accomplishment, no matter the actual mileage. I hope you enjoy it, and I wish you the best.

    I am 43 now, and when I am not traveling, or staying at large congested areas in cities that have heavy traffic pollution and particulate matter (Mumbai, Bengaluru, etc.) where there are virtually very few unobstructed/uninterrupted long distance running paths/roads, I have been regularly clocking 5-7km every alternate day (I know it's not that much) for nearly the past 10 years. There have been ups and downs, and moments of lull, when I am moving cities, houses, working of jobs that are all-round-the-clock schedules, however, I have attempted to keep a regular routine as much as possible. The conclusion. Nothing can substitute a healthy routine that you stick to with discipline and integrity. It builds your mental health, your physical health and makes you into a psychologically strong individual who can take the challenges of life when they present themselves, and come they will.

    I did something similar and at the end of year one I wondered if I should do a year and a day, two years or 500 days, 501 or 1,000 days etc. Then a friend of mine pointed out that asking myself if I would do more was the wrong question. It is taking the default point of view that on an ordinary day I would not run and then, instead, deciding to go for a run. The real question isn't one of why I should carry on until I have completed a pre-determined duration or distance or checking each day if I wanted to carry on but simply asking why I should not run? Then in the absence of a reason why I shouldn't run, my default is to go for a run. It is then no longer a decision I have to make, it is my default setting unless I have some reason to decide otherwise. Coming up to eight years now (should be over twelve but I was knocked off my bike and the nurse wouldn't let me pop out for a "walk") and I still never regret a run and therefore see no reason to stop so I say that people should ensure that they are asking the correct questions of themselves and if there is no reason not to run, keep running.

    I got hooked turning the doorknob during covid after never being a runner before, just an athlete. Never really enjoyed going out on runs before, now it's a part of my everyday routine. Started taking it seriously this past October and it's incredible what the body is capable of with consistency & maintenance. Ran my first race/ultra in late December and not looking back! Looking to embark on this every day journey in 2022. Cheers to everyone on their New Years Resolution, and stick with it!

    What an achievement! Thank you as always for showing us how it’s done. You inspired me last year to do the same, however it was unfortunately short lived. I broke my streak in mid February after developing shin splints earlier that month. I over did it. It killed me to have to stop but despite persisting through the pain it only made things worse so it was health over pride. I kept going out after a few days break trying to minimise the length of my rest but in the end two weeks were necessary. Even though I failed my daily goal I still continued with smaller goals and my fitness and times improved drastically! I am still really proud of what I achieved last year but this year I shall try again on the daily run and 1000 miles. Happy New Year, Göran!

    Great video so inspiring. I always told myself I wasn't a runner as I hated it in school and I'm slightly overweight and had previous knee injury. I told myself It just wasn't for me. I said I don't have a runner's physique it's only for certain people. One day I booked a ticket for a 10k race here in beautiful New Zealand as a crazy way of setting myself a goal. I posted it on Facebook as a way of people holding me accountable and set about running. I had never run before and nobody showed me what to do and as I was running along the waterfront one day, I spotted a running club and decided to run behind them. Not realizing they were more experienced I felt I needed to keep up the same pace and after 2 km I stopped completely out of breath. Moments later I injured myself and was out of action for a couple of months. I went to the 10k race in the hope of walking it but somehow ran my first ever 10k in 1hr 20 minutes. After this a friend of mine who ran the Marathon, the same day said hey James guess what you are a runner. He taught me how to run slowly but for longer. Now I've run almost 10 x 10k and realised that almost anyone can run. I stopped comparing myself others and ran my own pace and before I knew it I loved running. It's like my mind was transformed and I took up running at the age of 46. Amazing.

    I have a lot of excuses to keep me indoors in the winter: snow; icy roads; cold temps; fleeting daylight. However, if i want to do that 50 mile race in 2023, i will have to push that stuff aside and establish a routine. I accept the Goran Winblad challenge.

    Sorry to hear about your injury but now you are better which is great! I"m on the other end of the exercise scale where I try to keep walks 3 times a week but stopped for a few weeks and will start back up. Also, I started avoiding activities with elevated injury risk, which includes cycling. I don't have a bike right now, and that's another reason for quitting =D A bike is extremely useful in certain situations like riding to work, to the store and such if possible, but walking if practical a practical distance is also good.

    Göran, well done and thank you. Your video from last year inspired me to run every day too, which I have succeeded in doing (bar three days when I was recovering from a bad fall in the mountains). The greatest thing about it is, having been plagued by calf injuries, running everyday actually cured me of them and I’ve been far happier in general as a result. Thank you and happy new year!

    Inspiring video! I am in the process of daily runs for a month, half way through, good times so far! One question coming to my mind watching this video is "how many of those daily habits can we do until it gets too much?". 20mn running daily seems doable... but I also have 30mn of language learning for the last 10 years, 20mn guitar practice, weekly gym sessions, and now the daily running. I guess I could still squeeze one or two daily habits though, with commitment and time optimization 😊

    I’m inspired by your video. I just started my physical activity like almost 2 weeks now, but its just simply walking and not running. I need to reduce my weight and feel better. I have been making an average of 9K steps for 5 miles daily. Never too late for a change.
