I loved the analogy between hanging out with the team accountant or with the head of player personnel. Who would help with building the best team? That HR should be a people person who wants to see people grow and you have a winning HR department.

Summary: Company’s success depends on its team. CEO thinks that since HR is the driving force behind creating and developing winning teams, HR is the #1 function in his company. He also adds that HR is to make sure to recruit, pastor and parent best team and not merely for employee activities such as compensation, benefits and recreation

Far too often, in companies I have worked for, the HR group are primarily advocates for the company first and the employees are way down the line of their priorities. They are, first and foremost, more often seen as an entity to manage payroll costs and provide support solely to the Executives of the company. Companies will benefit far more if HR is challenged by management to create developmental programs and to have closer relationships with the organization such that they truly understand what drives the business and what motivates the people who support the business. HR needs to be more of an advocate of the employees, and not just a corporate entity that looks at the cost of the organization.

@Dave Sanborn valid statements ... unfortunately though, the business and industry is all for profits of the ownership and HR departments are to serve those purposes more than anything else, especially when the HR departments' perssonel in majority of companies are assigned by shareholders as owners" of the comopany! and in a job market where supply from the job-seekers is much higher than the demand by the job-owners, it's obvious that the HR department actually prefers the employees to quit, be fired or even laid off rather than kept for longer periods of time, ending up to retirement, at least half of which costs the company has to pay!

My best & most supportive manager in my career told me that the HR drpartment is not your friend or councilor.
The main purpose of HR is to keep the company from being sued.

By Jack and Suzy Welch We've always said that human resources ... and talking to business groups, it is that HR rarely functions as it should.

I wonder how many professionals and leaders can testify to actually having had HR or Talent Development teams that had integrity and functioned independently rather than with political motives. Probably few, very few. As a result, we tend to see teams and people suffer the consequences, and even see how talent tracks are derailed. Discrimination in an organisation is often also seeded by HR acting as a political agent.

What's unfortunate is that HR, more often than not, is exactly what Jack says it shouldn't be. More often than not, HR functions for benefits administration, parties, training on employment laws, etc, but also to support / justify managers in their roles. They are there to back-up managers, keep them in their roles not matter what and to protect the business from legal risks. They don't work to support creation of a diverse team of the best available employees (players) with individual talents who can function as a cohesive unit. Instead, they seem to like to field a team of lower-cost players with redundant talents...a team of second basemen...a low cost, predictable but non-winning team. Who's our next Jack Welch to lead the recovery from this bean-counter mentality?

In my experience, HRs vision, as inspiring as it maybe, is limited. Many middle managers do not implement the vision HR speaks of about the business. And senior managers don't track that either to ensure middle management is on point.

I agree that HR is a driving force in a company's success. However, from experience I feel that the CEO's of company's have a greater impact on choosing the players on the field, even if HR could make the better decision.

I have experienced that HR is more a role to be mastered by all chiefs, anjd HR area is aimed to facilitate best practices relatedto deveolp needed Talent.
Many times too much power in HR department is not good!
