    H/H match update:
    ...
Here we go with week 132 of 291 for our favorite classic game show. These episodes were taped on January 25, 1976 and first aired in late February and early March of 1976.
Our three stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces.
Semi-regular Patti Deutsch is back in the sixth seat after four weeks (we last saw her in 636-640). When it comes to the head-to-head match, she's one for two so far.
Kate Jackson returns for her second and final week, having first appeared in episode 511. She hasn't had a shot at the H/H yet.
And Jimmie Walker joins the party for his fifth week (of seven). He most recently played the week of 626-630, plus two extra days (646 & 647) sitting in for CNR in the third seat. Jimmie has been chosen for the head-to-head once, but didn't match.
The past two weeks have been all Richard as far as the head-to-head match goes. He played all 11 times, and matched six of them. (An excellent performance for those two weeks.)
Will Richard make it three weeks in a row? Or will Kate catch someone's eye before the week is out? Will Patti get another shot? Will Jimmie finally score his first H/H match?
    Stay tuned!
    Today's action:
A new champion makes her way to center stage.
Today's audience match question: "Needle _______"
The celebs: Richard (point), Brett (and thread), and Jimmie (park -- "The Panic in Needle Park" is a 1971 Al Pacino film )
    The choice: Point
The answers: in a haystack, and thread, point
Alright, now for the champion's $5000 choice...
    She opts for Richard.
    Today's H/H question: "_______ Jelly"
I would say Peanut Butter and Jelly.
Richard doesn't have an immediate response. He scratches and ponders for a moment and looks both right and left as if in search of inspiration.
The champion says "grape," but doesn't sound too convinced that she has the right answer. I personally hate grape jelly, but it sounds like a strong possibility for the definitive answer.
Richard's poker face convinced the champ that she'd lost, but he reveals: "Grape" -- and the contestant is excited to say the least!
Richard scores his 154th H/H match.
Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
    Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts).
    Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts).
TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    Fannie - 52.6% (10 wins in 19 attempts).
    Betty - 50% (17 wins in 34 attempts).
    Charles - 47.7% (21 wins in 44 attempts).
Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts).
    Richard - 40.8% (154 wins in 377 attempts).
    Brett - 38.5% (20 wins in 52 attempts).
    Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts).
*These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 656, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

Gene Rayburn lived in New York for decades and saw the demise of the City over the sixties. BTW, for those of you who don't know, "Needle Park" is now the very toney Bryant Park. It was nicknamed Needle Park in the bad old days of NYC because it was notorious as a location where heroin addicts used. A Faye Dunaway film, Panic in Needle Park (1971) memorializes that sad time.

@@DavidLEzellMore commonly, Needle Park, was, as Gene said, at 72nd and Bway, Verdi Square. Bryant Park, behind the library at 42nd and 5th (nowhere near), seems to have had the name, too, but wasn't the one in the movie, and I'd never heard of that before.

I think Richard got a little help on the Grape Jelly answer. The English don't even use the word jelly but that usually doesn't stop Richard since he is the most Americanized Englishman ever.

    • @jjryan1352
      @jjryan1352 3 года назад

      Language lesson:
American "jelly" = jam without the chunky parts
British "jelly" = American jell-o (gelatin)
But isn't there such a thing as jam without the chunky parts in England? Why yes, it's called "jelly" of all things: red current jelly, cranberry jelly, mint jelly, sweet chilli jelly, and bramble jelly (from the Tesco list). It turns out that the first three are considered savoury condiments and used quite differently from jam or American sweet jelly. Bramble jelly is sweet jelly like American jelly; seems it is the only one made as jelly rather than jam because the fruit is so intractable.
American English seems more precise because we have three different terms to differentiate jam, jelly and jell-o, while the English terms jam and jelly have to cover all three products. In both cases though, 'jelly' has to cover two different products: American jelly both sweet and savoury, and British jelly both gelatin and savoury jelly.

@@MooncricketsInc Gary is legit annoying, much different than his acting roles. Walker is doing the schtick that made him famous in the 1970s, just like Kevin Hart does today. He's there because the public likes that schtick. Just because YOU can't identify with "ghetto humor" you put it down as annoying. Guess what, things were happening with race in the 70s, it's only a "new" thing to closet racists. Good Times was the first sitcom with an African-American nuclear family. This whole show was very open with guests and panelists of all races, even having interracial kissing, which was taboo just a decade earlier.
