  • In this age of propaganda, we find ourselves influenced not only by the voices of traditional and social media, but by our own inner voices. In this unique piece blending science and inspiration, Psychologist and Performance Poet, Owen Fitzpatrick, shares his own heartfelt journey through depression and low self-esteem. He describes the key to taking back control of our minds and winning the war in our heads.
Owen Fitzpatrick is a globetrotting Psychologist from Dublin, Ireland. He has travelled to more than 92 countries and delivered talks and courses in more than 27 countries helping them to understand more about how their brain works. Owen has a masters in Applied Psychology, had his own television show on RTE ONE for a couple of years and has spoken on stage with the likes of Sir Richard Branson, Seth Godin and Dr Richard Bandler.
He has presented lectures and talks in University College Cork, Trinity College Dublin and the Michael Smurfit Business School. Having travelled as far as countries such as North Korea, Rwanda and Afghanistan for his research, Owen has been fascinated with how propaganda, storytelling and influence works. Co-founder of the Irish Institute of NLP, Owen has spent many years working as a therapist and corporate trainer. A trained actor and screenwriter, he has specialised in the power of stories as a tool to influence.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

You can't rhyme "negatively" with "negatively"!
While we're at it, "machetes" doesn't rhyme with "babies".

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I'm sorry to those of you who found the rhyming distracting. My other videos on my youtube channel may be easier to make sense of. To those who found it embarrassing to watch, think how embarrassing it was to do!! ;) I also know 'struggling' and 'beating' the voice is just one possibility and you can also 'accept or choose peace', but different things work for different people. To those who found it helpful or useful at all, really glad it made even a bit of a difference... that was the point. I really appreciate your kind comments and sincerely hoped it connected with you.

As someone who has only recently begun to find success in a life-long fight against low self-esteem - thanks for this talk, Dr. Fitzpatrick. I found the spoken word portions beautiful and insightful. The rap portions were uncomfortable to listen to, but I felt it was intentional, even necessary for your message. It's why I found it so inspiring - I felt like I was watching you flip the bird at that inner voice on stage by creating that discomfort. I couldn't help but admire the courage it took to go out and share your story in such a vulnerable and powerful way.

i read a story at Mindcontrol SE -web page , about the mind technology chip. (mindtech sweden) it helped me, and i have exactly same things and effects happened. i have chip too . Had it 3 years,1st year they listen my thoughts, and effect my natural use of attention, second year they touch my body motoristics and also start the kind of mind reading torture you described - they seem to use it to keep man not doing anything. they can react from your observations, and they follow your use of your attention to notice things in world. They can repeat my thoughts as words but they seem to be building systems where other persons say parts of the sentence im going to say. They can jam my thoughts for a half second and prevent me from thinking a word, and they say that word themselves then. They study how man use the memory of another man. Another man can use my memory. Human brainwaves are so similar that they can do this so another mans brain system understand another man brain. They send my all senses brainwaves data to another man, and with smaller effect his brainwaves to me. the brainwaves coming from another man are send to me fragmented. Now its been about 3 years, and he he tries to CONTINUE my started thoughts. The system is digital, and digitally controlled. I've seen medtronic nuclear battery and implant combination and such but i don know which firms chip i got (darpa or medtronic or ). i suspect it was installed when my wisdom teeths were moved, and installed in place of teeth , or close to brain via mouth, it took an hour (too much ) . I have travelled around the world, and it still worked, in aeroplanes , and in new zeland, or finland. It uses satellite system. they can see through my eyes of course. the chip is still active and i can speak with the people who torment me . They effect to use attention and in case of some people they can make him feel someone means to look at him like they know him or even that someone is stalking him, its because the other people connected to him via chip, is effecting his use of attention and feeling something about those people.

I have often told people that I don't listen to music is because our brains are wired to accept the rhythms and rhymes as truth. The lyrics in songs become part of our thinking, that takes away from my ability to think for myself . That music can and dose hijack the mind. You have used this predilection of the human mind to resonate to the patterns in the music of speech very effectively. Not just your rapping but the rhyme you put to your reason. I will be watching this talk many more times as I fight my own battle with the bully in my head. Thank you for this valuable tool.

I learned how to manage my mind years ago after sequels of depression and anxiety. I identified my pattern of thoughts as the problem. I learned with books how to teach and reset my mind and also developed my spirituality and those two things got me out of that dark hole. Now I can identify unhealthy thinking patterns and I know how to manage them. All this requires inner knowledge, patience, determination, and a lot of self love too. ❤

The negative voice in my head, sometimes I feel like it's two separate worlds the one in my head n the one outside, and sometimes I just say to my self "God I just wish I could live outside my head, then I will see how beautiful the world is" !! It is really so tiring! But just remember it's just pointless meaningless bored voices that just want to say sth! We're not the voices in our heads! We're more beautiful, more free n more stronger! It's not just the rhyming and the way it was delivered, but so many valid points connecting for me. For example, the reminder of how important cognitive behavioral therapy is and that we can write our own story. This speech isn't just another piece of content. This speech is a masterpiece. It is a Ted Talk and a motivational speech all in one. My heart lights up every time I watch this. Owen Fitzpatrick, thank you so much for taking the time to make this contribution to humanity. Owen Fitzpatrick - watched this today for the first time. I loved the poem, the beat, and the inspiring message that reminds us that we get trapped into battles with that negative voice in our head! Thank you for this lesson on how to fight negative thoughts, boost our confidence! You're gifted... such a talent!

Wow, sir: that was not just a ted talk, not just a personal experience stuffed up with all the right scientific infos. That was unique and it takes a whole lots of guts to go that path. That was, by no doubts,a piece of art. Thank you for sharing. I Never saw anything so authentique, brave, Sharp. This is just an utterly astonishing win-win. Wow.
