Living on the south east coast going gigging has been a favorite of mine since I was a young one. When they make their runs inland I love it.. Good clean sandbars have given us hours of fun and food. Flounder is my favorite eating fish as well.

i graduated High School inSouth Florida in 1982. and this sport wasn’t a thing back then i do like the process and if i was to ever return to living back there again it’s definitely something i want to try as i do like Fresh caught Flounder and as a Scuba Diver i really enjoyed Spear fishing

when i grew up in fla we did this and i loved it and when i became a chef for a living after we would spear em i got to stuff em with lobster and shrimp and scallop stuffing so good i miss those days no flounder in the north ga mountains

I have been floundering from a boat (as opposed to wading) all my life so far. My father taught us to gig the flounder through the gill plate. His reasoning was less damage to edible meat and he said it was more humane. I must admit the fish quiverd and flopped around less which always made sense to us. I don't know how your lights are stored when underway but ours tilted up on the deck and were tied down which placed them at gunnel level above the water. Seeing mullet in the water reminds me when we were running from on spot to the next we would drive through schools of mullet in the bay and it was always the responsibility of the person sitting up front to touch the gator clip (we didn't have switches on the lights) to the battery terminal blinking the lights above water and causing the mullet to jump as we slowed down in the school, almost always causing some to jump in the boat. We called them volunteers. You might occasionally get hit by a mullet during this process which seemed to ad to the fun when we were kids.
jerry sipes some the most fun while floundering with my father was to talk him into going to spots where to the ran up into the sawgrass (our favorites were Redoubt Bayou and behind building 638 which is now the Navy Yacht Club) as we would approach the sawgrass with our floundering lights on the mullet would come boiling out and I would have great fun stabbing mullet as you say. If you hit them you had to be quick. It was the same thrill I got from quail hunting when you walked into a covey and they would get up all around you. You had to have great reflexes but it was more fun than a shooting gallery.

I'm in Texas and we don't use a boat that's cheating lol. we wade sometimes up to a half mile from shore gotta build a fire so you can find your way back. when you're out there with just a head lamp and you're waist deep and see shadows just outside the light as big as you are that's when it gets fun
Damn... your lucky. They closed the season on flounder in nc for the first time I can ever remember. Wouldn't you know it the flounder were biting like crazy as soon as they did. Big flounder too... oh well. Still got trout and reds...
