You can see how passionate this guy is. It's like this every time I see him talking. I think he could literally write a book haha.

Man, this is a kind of awkward video, he's sat on a not too comfy looking chair and looks really tiny or far away. I am always impressed with how JC has the ability to talk a topic for hours on end and stay interesting and not fumble around.

John is one of the few people in the world who can talk for 3 hours straight and i'll happily listen to him.

Did this guy literally just sit on that chair for two hours straight talking.. wow.
I hope it was a comfortable chair.

I really wanna lay down some cups around his chair, so that when he leaks drops of passion I could use them to synthesis a motivational serum.

I like his anecdote about people not noticing that steroscopy was missing in one of his demo apps. Good to point out to those who compare VR to 3D movies - when the VR experiences can still be engaging WITHOUT stereo.

Captured video content with true depth information is something I would like to see. I still think that having individual video for each eye has an advantage because specular reflections that differ between the eyes tells our brains quite a lot about material properties. Good examples are water and oily skin.

Having watched a few 180 deg stereoscopic videos in the DK2 (for science) I can say that it is definitely viable as an extension of current storytelling like video and theater. You don't really want to turn your head more than that while passively consuming content anyway. It might not be VR but it is very immersive "presence video".

Did he just ask the audience if they used a CV1 or the Vive? Does that mean the Crescent Bay prototype is basically the CV1? 3:45

    • @JZGreenline

Gary Singh Yeah I heard that too. Maybe he said CB1.. idk.

Next time, I get a client that asks me about building an AR HMD product I am going to point them at this video around the 1:19:30 mark. I totally agree with Carmack. HMD AR is still not full FOV, high enough FPS, and good ergonomics. Head mounted AR is good as a developer product, but not a consumer product.

Functional programming doesn't give you infinite memory. You're getting buffer overflows with imperative because you use fixed size arrays instead of variable size, like std::vector, doing it wrong.

1:11:30 Well this sure didn't age well... VR headsets ended up being HUUUUUUGE in the professional CAD world! And ultra high end, near strictly enterprise focused VR headset manufacturers targeting that market are still EXTREMELY prevalent almost 8 years later! Varjo in particular has built basically their entire company & products on the back on that specific business model.

so that explains why shitty as games look shitty as hell on VR. The codecs suck... Really excited for panoramic movies and entertaiment tho. It truly is the future because that could be transferd to holographics
