I was installing a lintel with my brother at his house and he was altering the single toilet area. Building Control were more interested in the toilet because like us, not many people know that it alter the length of the toilet waste pipe or anything on the stack, you require building regs. I kid you not.

Great video on the bathroom rip out.could you not connect the basin waste and shower waste together so you only have one run into the stack pipe.tiles came off easy enough without to much damage to walls.bet it will look smart when finished 👍
I was thinking that too.
Thanks mate….. I never like teeing in wastes as they can pull on each other especially a shower waste.
@@MJTiffPlumbing Hey mate, was actually thinking this too, but maybe chuck an AAV on?
Just asking your opinion, not bashing 💪
Ditto
Decent start to the job. As others have said I would of stuck a tee close to tbe stack taken the basin waste into the 1-1/2 & then just the shower waste. On the basin waste fit an antivac trap or self sealing valve.
There's no chance a basin waste backing up the shower waste as you've then put the connection close to the stack. No chance of them pulling as you've only got an electric shower as opposed to one off a combi or pumped.
I'd be more concerned as to almost little to no fall on the shower waste as electric showers generate so little water they struggle to run away & eventually block especially with knuckle bends . I'd of used a hole saw on the joists & atruggled with a few sockets but peace of mind I'd got a decent fall on it. But hey we all approach things differently .
Could you not of got the customer to go for a pumped shower & run both bathrooms off of it to do the showers ? Give them a decent shower as opposed to dancing around an electric shower to get wet. All that graft for an electric shower even if its a 10.8 , you'll be replacing it in about 4 years !! Or converted it to a unvented win win for both bathrooms . Appreciate its extra cost to the punter . But a better shower performance !
Am interested in seeing you cut this pan as I detest back to the wall pans nightmare to connect up. 🤞it goes ok .
Looking good mate, keep up the good work
Thanks mate 👍🏼👍🏼
I hate back to wall pans, you can never be sure they are not leaking till it shows up on the ceiling below.
Yep very true…. Just have to trust you’ve nailed it when fitting 👍🏼👍🏼

Live in Midlands had no water , can't flush or nothing for 6 days now ! Had 5 plumbers out so far basiccly live on top of a takeaway there's 2 flats in on same second floor mine is a one floor flat and my neighbour has an upstairs , basiccly when I flush the chain it starts backing up and then if I run the tap it will back into the toilet and bath ! If my neighbour flushes or runs the taps it backs into my bath also !! First plumber didnt want to touch it and said its a severn trent water issue and they need to clear it from the main sewage they checked and said its clear from there ! We have a main sewage clean out in the back of the takeaway downstairs and the second plumber said it looks clear ! Thrid day a tried plumber came out and noticed because of the back up of water the pipe burst inside the wall and came apart 😳 flooded my whole bathroom and down into the takeaway!! That plumber didn't want to do it as we don't know the layout of the pipe work etc! When the water backed up into the bath we unplugged the pipe which went from the sink outside into a main drain line which leads downstairs to stop water coming in and got it to redirect outside instead ! The whole pipe when we take the sink pipe off is filled to the top of water backup! My landlord said that pipe thats full goes both left and right and has u bends! What would this problem be my neighbour is being very selfish and keeps running the taps etc and it backs into my bath! If we turn taps on or flush more then once same thing will happen pipe will fill and back into my bath and toilet it was so bad it broke the seal around my toilet and water was spraying out ! My landlord got another plumber which he chose to be cheap with to come and repair the pipe which was leaking and he ran my tap literally once and the tap for all but 3 seconds and said it was working so the landlord tried blaming us for taking a small pipe off the back of the sink which backed into the main pipe which has back up in ! If we didn't take that off water would have carried on coming in ! We saved him thousands in damage by doing that and quick thinking I grabbed every single towel bucket and even bed sheets etc to soak up the water ! And we were taking it in turns to empty the bath as it filled! The landlord refuses to turn the water off by mains and the problem still isn't fixed the pipe that came off in the celling thats been repaired but the back up is still there and backs up from my neighbours toilet above mine into my bath and mine does the same ! What could this be is this a soil stack blockage or is it something to do with the pipe that attaches to the back of the bathroom sink because that one is the one connected to the sink and bath and thats the one I took the off and was backed up right down into the celling! Would the soil stack back up into other pipes also? Because I thought it was a main line sewage problem and sevebrn trent would fix it ! But they said no blockage and the man who came to check the main line clean out whixh is inside the takeaway said it was working but he only got the takeaway to run there taps and toilet and we didn't get asked and we are on the 2nd and third floor ! :/ confused!
Wow….. that’s a real mess.
Without seeing and testing everything it’s hard to work out what the issue is to be honest…… I would be pestering the landlord to get it sorted as it’s a health issue now with soul pipe water backing up
"good job we are over tacking the ceiling then!" Sparks, get a hole saw and a dust pan and brush!!!!
He knew we were before doing that obviously….. if it’s a finished ceiling he wouldn’t be doing that
I get that but sparks need carful guidance especially when they are wielding a hammer, I’ve got mine in tomorrow and he drops cable, tape and general stuff all over the site and thinks it’s someone else’s job to clean up after, I’m sick of tidying up after him so tomorrow he’s gonna have an interesting morning cuppa 😜

HI Mark nice work and vid love the cutting tool must get one all the best
Thanks mate, they are handy
sorry stupid question time, why cant you plumb the shower drain into the sink drain and just have the one pipe going across the joists?
Not the best way to do waste pipes, will cause gurgling
Great job mate, would it not beenbetter to bring the 4" under the floor and go in the side of the toilet T for the shower and basin, great jobs anyway.
No room for the mate….. and a huge joist at the back
@@MJTiffPlumbing yea seen that too, some times you just gotta do what you gotta do. I done a similar job with stack internal but brought it outside and back in again was tight and alot of measuring. But looks good pal, can't wait to see the toilet pan cut out I always have to cut the back of the back to walls as there is never room for anything.
Mark they do sell those pans with one side cut out, got one from plumbase recently, was still a bit tight though!
Yer so a few people have said😮😮
Why would you notch the joists again when you can simply put a T into the small waste pipe and extend it to the shower?
Because I don’t tee waste pipes together as it causes issues including gurgling and flow issues….
Great video 👍
Thanks mate
Weird that the customer is fine with overboarding the back wall. The bath is tiny right now and an extra layer of board+plaster can make a visual difference if it comes to the size of the bath in this case
Good job it’s just a shower then😉😉
An extra 12mm isn’t an issue👍🏼
Nice mate love a good rip out! Could’ve durgo’d that vent and boxed in lower level for a shelf maybe but extra work for no real reason haha, keep the vids coming 🤙
Then that creates the issue on the roof, have to get a roof tiler to come and fit a new one in the place of the stack etc etc
Tough few days Mark as always
Yep a lot to get sorted ready for the tilers to come in….. busy busy
Do you need toput pipes in the wall to feed the basin
Yeah they do pans with the left and right side knocked out already I'm sure they're made by roca i have sold a few of them from City plumbing 😁
I will have to take a look👍🏼👍🏼
Does anybody know please - In a new solid concrete floor, is there a standard distance the soil stack needs to be from the wall?? Once the floor is poured there's no going back, if its wrong its bad news. 😢
No mate…. You can always adapt it…..
felt your pain on soil stack
Was just bloody awkward
With all them notches in the joist for the pipes, doesn't the integrity of the joist be compromised?
Thinking same thing
The notches must be about 55mm deep which means that technically the joists should be 440mm deep.......
Never had an issue in 26years…. This is what you have to do when people want bathrooms with no pipes on show etc
That’s the problem , when you have bathrooms, the waste pipe work should be boxed in , you definitely lose a bit of space , the timber joist looks healthy, and it’s on a second floor, he can get away with it, but you definitely don’t do that on a first floor, those are most important joist.
Notches should only be an eighth of the joist depth. Would never cut joists that deep - stuff what the customer wants - they will be quick to blame you when something goes wrong.
They do do pans with knockout points on either side like kitchen sinks, always dodgy doing it but they do them🙄 second fixing today and customer agreed one for electric towel rail position then changed mind so had to remove four tiles and re fit as the tiler had finished to move over 100mm🙄😂
Well I never knew they did them 👍🏼👍🏼
@@MJTiffPlumbing they are abit scary to punch out tho mate😬
I'm not a plumber. Why can't you use the existing 40mm waste for both shower and basin?
Not good practice to tee wastes into each other as it will “pull” and can cause gurgling
@@MJTiffPlumbing Thanks for your advice
Arnt there rules and regs about how much joist you can cut out and distance from the end plate?
Yes there is, and what he did exceeds what building control deem as safe. That’s why he hasn’t liked your comment and ignored you.
Could you not have shared the large existing notch outs on the floor to run your copper, not being negative love your vids
Always keep the pipes seperate in the floors to allow for board fixing positions
Can you not take the soil pipe straight down under the toilet and then across to the stack? Saves cutting the toilet and having to add horizontal boxing in
Not in that floor space mate…. It’s all done now, take a look sunday
Internal soil pipes are a pain in the arse 🤣🤣🤣
Oh yes…… completely agree

Another interesting video and great to see the progress of a new bathroom. Trying to have my bathroom refurbished but what is it about people coming out to quote and then you never hear back from them?
Thanks buddy…… someone people just don’t want the work it would seem
I have just today ripped my bathroom out and the wastes are in a right mess
The person who did it 20 odd years ago has got the shower and basin T'ed init the waste for the bath ,then goes into the stack ,the shower waste pipe actual slopes up hill under the floor and have stood for far to long today ,looking at the stack and thinking can I just the section of the stack out and start from scratch ,Ffs
Bloody wastes can be a right pain
@@MJTiffPlumbing
Thanks so much for posting this vid mark , as decision has been made after watching it
Cut the stack out and replace
Can I ask what inserts you use for the soil pipe tees to get wastes in? I was on a job the other day to repair a leaking one outside and showed up with a BOSS rubber insert but it was too big (soil pipe tee cut out) so had to mangle the rubber insert with a stanley and a load of silicone to make it fit. I rang around asking for a slightly smaller insert but nobody seemed to know what I was talking about.
I enjoy your videos so much useful tips and info i am stuck in something though so will contact you directly 👌
Glad you enjoy the content👍🏼👍🏼
Could you not have connected the basin waste into the shower waste?
I don’t like teeing waste pipes together as they can pull on each other and drain traps causing smells to get out
Yea true but aslong as the fall ain’t to aggressive and Anti vac trap shouldn’t have any issues saves having big notches near each other in the joists
Hi Mark, this job looks like it will make a great series of films.

Two bathrooms will be great 🍻👍👍👍
Just T into the shower waste pipe for the sink, simple and no excessive cutting of joists.
And the wrong way to connect a sink and shower waste… I prefer to do it correctly 👍🏼
@@MJTiffPlumbing why is that the wrong way? But cutting all of that material out of floor joists, is the right way? I’m a carpenter, and you’ve weakened those joists by doing that, I’ve never seen someone take so much out. If you’re going to be dismissive or sarcastic I’ll just leave, can never have a serious conversation on construction videos because people get offended too easy.
I’m not offended…. It seems you are by me replying!!!…..
T’ing in a basin to a shower waste will cause it to “gurgle” when the basin is used and visa versa…..
People on the internet think they can put a comment and don’t like it when someone goes against what they are saying.
In 30years of doing bathrooms and trimming joists for pipework I’ve not had 1 single issue….
@@MJTiffPlumbing “Before you start work check that the joist size is adequate for the span.
Notches can only be made in the top OR bottom of the joists, (not both) within the permitted area to a maximum of 35mm.
Holes may only be made on the joist's centreline within the permitted area to a maximum diameter of 65mm.
Additional holes must be at least three diameters (centre to centre) apart.
Single/multiple timber structural beams, rafters, purlins and binders must never be notched or drilled without calculations to justify the remaining timber. Rafters may be birdsmouthed by no more than 1/3rd of the depth.
This guidance does not apply to engineered joists e.g. JJI joists and reference should be made to specific product manufacturers instructions”
chopping down 40-45mm for a shower waste pipe goes against building control mate, it’s that simple.
Good old Google 🤣🤣
This is Real World buddy….👍🏼
The white pipe that you initially took off that shows the black rubber needs replacing(its currently leaking) 😮, can you just seal it with silicone or do i replace the whole part? Your advice is much needed thank you

Why didn't you black off the old basin waste.. then add a new tee for the basin waste into the shower waste pipe but add a anti syphon basin trap.
Not a fan of teeing waste pipes together so I avoid where I can mate
Why cant you put the basin and shower down the same pipe?
Can cause suction issues and pulling water out of traps… along with gurgling
Why is the shower waste so high notched in joist.. If the tray sits on floor normally waste is say at least 70mm to centre of pipe as it comes out of pot. Surely there's no fall unless the tray is risen right...

Hey McTiff run shower waste in-between joists where connection is and then turn to trap far better fall or did that mean taking another floor board up ohhhhhhh

Hi mate, got a question, i turned off my stoptap under the sink I have an unvented white cylinder, I turned on the hot taps & it wouldn't seem to stop flowing? does turning off the cold stoptap, stop hot water coming out so I can change a tap / shower etc?
Hope u don’t mind me replying
If it’s invented turning of the main feed to the house should stop your hot water
If not though the cold feed going into the bottom of the cylinder should have a valve on so try finding that and turning it off and the hot water will stop 👍
