I agree. Either we can overcome and grow wiser and stronger, or we stay in victim mode, either blaming ourselves or others for our dissatisfaction. My mother has BPD. Thank goodness I lived with my grandmother, fathers mother and she was caring. I stopped the blame and became empowered. My mother believes in her own helplessness.

I took "Deep Rest" as leaving a persona you are trying to hold and stepping back giving it a "rest". It is going back to who you really are instead of trying to hold onto somebody you're not.

@@louisamichellelollthis is absolutely how Carrey meant it- to allow the SOUL to rest from all of the BS that places our true selves into “character” mode. This is very much a deeper, more spiritual take on it.

Jack Nicholson made an interesting comment about playing a character like the Joker - he said that when he Heath Ledger took the part he said that the Joker was the hardest role he had ever played and it would stay with Heath Ledger for a long time … after Heath Ledger died Jack Nicholson said ‘I tried to warn him …’

    • @elezeiaz
      @elezeiaz 6 месяцев назад +4

´That's really fucked up to say though. Heath Ledger died of an overdose. An accidental overdose of prescrption medicine (Painkillers & Anti-depressants). BEFORE he even finished the movie. The last scenes that where not filmed when Heath passed had to be filmed by other actors instead.
The Autopsy concluded Heath Ledgers overdose was an accident. Saying anything else is not okay. The documentary that came out about him had all his loved ones state that playing the Joker did not make him depressed nor did it give him sleep issues, he had those all his life.

Depression loves a fight. I learned that from the mindfulness book 30 Days to Reduce Depression by Harper Daniels. It fights to keep us identified with it...saying "I am depressed" isn't helpful, it's better to tell the self "I am experiencing depression." Mindfulness helps a lot.

Absolutely loving these videos. You publish them when I’m doing my blue light or exercise in the morning to stave off seasonal depression. Making the complex simple is what I do to prevent seasonal depression. Each Spring I write myself an email and delay sending it until the next early fall to remind myself that the depression ends and give specific activities and routines that kept me out of the deep depression last winter. It’s worked amazingly the past 3 years. Before that all I wanted was ‘deep-rest’ and that only made it worse :) really appreciate your videos!

When he said "deep rest" he was saying "from the character that you were playing" which I do not take to mean staying on the couch. Just that your situation, social expectations, everything, are things you need to not be in anymore. Taking a rest from "you" and time to just "be"

I've been a writer and am a professionally trained actor. I am also in therapy for depression and childhood trauma. I have found that acting (and writing) demands learning a sense of empathy for the character that your portray. Especially in method acting we rely on our own "vault" of emotional experiences but it also teaches us to intellectualise and analyse everything. I have found that art (such as painting, drawing, music etc) often bypasses my intellect and allows my emotional/ subconscious to leak out. I have also found that, as an actor, the boundaries can blur. Professionally we are taught not to allow this blurring between our own true selves and the characters that we portray. As with all boundaries, however, without mindfulness it is easy to either over-empathise or over-indulge in the emotions of the character. It all comes down to self-care and honesty. It can be a useful therapeutic tool, or become a destructive entangled web.

Dr. Bessel VanderKolk wrote The Body Keeps The Score, and in it he examines the high ability of theater and drama to treat trauma and depression. As a trauma survivor and former theater kid, I can attest to the ways that a person truly does introspection as they become a character and as bad as method acting can be, the character becoming them might just be one of the greatest ways that a person connects the disparate parts of themselves. I learned who I was growing up on the stage, doing 3 shows a year for 9 years until graduating high school. Without that, I'd likely be dead now. So the idea that somebody like Jim Carrey is depressed because he was becoming someone else is the exact opposite of what theatrics do for people with trauma and depression.

Although I’ve never been diagnosed, I’m certain I was suffering from depression in high school. It was a very dark time for me. I didn’t care about much of anything, I didn’t think I would ever be happy. Eventually, I started reading some books about positive affirmations. I learned how to make room for positive emotions in my head. This lead me to study meditation, and 20 years later, I had a realization about the ego. I had cherry picked certain thoughts, emotions, and principles from inside my head, bundled them together, and label them as “me”, but that label was never a real thing. The interesting thing is for some reason I had picked a lot of the negative, self judging things to label as “me”. I could go on all day, but I’ll end with saying it is so freeing to just let those thoughts go, to simply let them be no more important than all the other thoughts in my head.

At 23, you're trying to figure things out. You're still exploring life, finding out what you're like. If you want to know who you are, make some goals, head out there and smash them. Be smart about your choices, and never be afraid to research when it's necessary and not ultra time-sensitive.
As far as your emotions and thoughts being temporary labels for who you are, every emotion we go through comes with different actions and thoughts. If you've got re-occuring depression, then that just makes the differences more stark because you're aware of some unhealthy, continual state. They're all who you are, friend. They're just your own personal way of coping with negative emotions and events.
What I find helps is thinking of things that don't change regardless of your emotional state. They're more cemented aspects of your identity (hobbies, foods, certain world views, other consistencies,) but your going to have a fluid existence regardless of your emotional state, whether clinical mental illness or not. Start from the easy parts, then the rest falls into place. Sometimes it's having the confidence to just be a person

I’ve found parts of myself within my art.
I can look back over it and it will tell a story of how my mind was at the time I made it.
You can see it clearly if you look.
Then there are the times that I’ll be making art, without any intent, and things just sort of appear, as if from nowhere.
In those moments, I get to see myself in a different way again.
My past depressions have been the stories I told myself, my art in all its forms are the stories I tell the world.

I am a visual artist and I have always had trouble communicating especially when it revolves around myself but I found that working subconsciously with my art work and then having discourse about the work allows me to figure more about myself (and sometimes think of the person who made that work as an entirely separate human) and it becomes very therapeutic. I feel like i witness myself.

I'm studying drama therapy and what we call aesthetic distance is super important to keep a "healthy" distance to the art (be it acting or not) to be able to profit from it. Being underdistanced and unaware or even seeking that can be quite tricky because you can lose yourself in the bodily experience of playing someone else. I myself like to use acting roles who have very different moods very consciously to break my depressive cycle. But I am doing it consciously as a tool. I'm literally faking it until my body at least believes it a little bit. And then I can use my other tools to help me through an episode. Also acting usually happens around other people and is fun :D so that helps too!

An interesting comment. I recently watched a roundtable with Kate WInslet, NIcole Kidman and Meryl Streep and they all said the same thing. Kate said that after she had played several demanding roles in a row, in which her respective characters had all experienced some trauma or other, she noticed that she was carrying vestiges of those roles in her, and that this caused disturbances of her mental state and a certain unease or stress. I think it is imperative to be able to clearly separate who you are from the role you are playing, and I bemoan the day that film critics stopped saying 'John Doe as played by Actor X' and just started saying 'John Doe'. They did this more or less out of laziness - because they could not be bothered to repeat the phrase '...as played by Actor X' at various times in their reviews when discussing plots etc.
In doing this they are treating film reality as if it were indivisible from human reality - which is a fundamentally flawed approach and very unwise. It is not going to be helping kids from knowing the difference, for example, and when you consider how they idolise film actors and the roles they play, this is why some of them ape what they see, and dangerously so.
An actor's training I believe needs to include some one-on-one therapy (CBT for example) so they can learn these healthy distancing techniques. NLP is also extremely good for this. When I did my masters we learned to go to second position, third and fourth - almost unheard of in other forms of one-on-one working.
Many of my clents already have major breakthroughs in the second position alone, so imagine then what they achieve when I take them to the third position - which is outside and somewhat removed from You in first position (experiencing the event) to second position (watching yourself experience the event ). In the third you relate to how you are being when you are in your first and second positions, and fourth you watch the whole event and all those three of you from space, looking down and applying transcendent wisdom to it all.

The creative reflection he mentions does happen in all forms of creativity. If you allow yourself to create from the higher self, to be a channel, you will have to do things you don't yet intellectually understand. You hear people talk about following a hunch or a vision. Only in retrospect do you recognize what it meant and why you did the choices you did. In his case, he refers to the choice of scripts because they somehow resonate or "feel right" but if you asked him at the time why he chose one over the others, he wouldn't be able to articulate it well or provide some ego-based reasoning. He wouldn't know yet. That is revealed in retrospect. That is why creativity requires personal courage, unless, of course, you create from the ego, which many people do and the results look accordingly.

The more you understand people and strive to find common ground with all sorts of personalities and the souls who wear them the closer you`ll get to understand yourself through introspection and by others` reaction to you.
If you hate everyone or believe people are mostly assholes, you probably are saying a lot about your relationship with yourself.
To discover is to seek the core of things to be able to see what isn`t visible. Acting is a lot like that.
When we watch a good actor we are able to sit back and let them show us someone else life, from a bird`s eye view as well as from the private conversation inside that person during their interaction with the outside world.
This is beautiful because in rationality what`s been done is added layers of a manufactured image in order to show something real and something human. The story tells us what we need to understand WHY.
We don`t care that the actor we`re watching not only is his own person in private or that we have seen him play many different roles before.
We are aware that it`s a movie and how that is different from real life experiences and we are aware of our actual location in space/time.
These factors or added layers serve to keep our minds open and prohibits us from being clouded by our own feelings and judgement.
We learn when we are able to relate and that is very emotionally engaging.
I don`t think actors have a lesser developed understanding of themselves or their depth but I do think they have to be emotional, sensitive and passionate people in order to do well and want to act.
These kind of people usually come from turbulent backgrounds and some may be running from that or from themselves forever in a subconscious way.
If the person externalises their struggles they want to BE the actor, they may collect wealth and climb social ladders only to find no happiness there.
If the person is introverted and internalises their struggles they will isolate themselves because they need time to be alone, to just be without the stress to have to be someone in a room with others.
Their job becomes the role that filters their interactions through a milky screen.
They feel alone and broken and the fact that their occupational talent brings joy to others is taken very seriously.
They know what it feels like to starve from depression and loneliness and they are very serious about what they put out in the world.
They take this on as their purpuse and they start to loath their own sadness. They keep it hidden and hopelessness consumes them so they run from it.
If you`re running from yourself by being other people you will never catch a break and reload in between, and everyone needs that, but especially someone living multiple lives at the same time between reality, roleplaying, on set, the public eye etc
Life can feel like a prison for a soul who see no end to this.

I'm going to go off on a little birdwalk, but really it's the same topic. Kpop artists, and I'm going to talk particularly about BTS, often talk about their onstage persona and off stage. Because the companies that manage them (own them), purposed choose what role they'll play in their group. V started out as the "odd" one. JK is the "golden maknae" who can do know wrong. RM was a "tough rapper". Hobi was was "BTS' hope and sunshine" Suga was the "manic rapper" Jimin was the "Dancer". Jin was the "cool, arrogant, cold face". But they live their lives so much in front of a camera, social media, lives, videos, tv shows, guest appearances, and even off stage they are supposed to keep up this "appearance" or persona. Which was so draining for them. RM wrote a whole song about it, called Persona. Yoongi's search for his sense of self apart from Suga and August D has been a beautiful journey. You should consider looking into their content, specifically when they talk about this phenomenon.

'What is lewy body dementia, causes, symptoms and treatment .gov" is a really good article study, to help understand how medications can contribute to dementia, movement disorders and suicide.
😢Unfortunately sometimes we get these conditions due to practitioners not fully understanding medication side effects. Lewy body can be misdiagnosed as a further psychiatric problem and the medication given, enhances the symptoms. The world loves Robin Williams and may he rest in peace.
In the article I mention above, it speaks about movement disorders being a part of LBS.
Celine Dion's stiff person syndrome, I believe the evidents points to antidepressants. MJFs parkinsonism, possibly from a similar thing, as he claims his condition is possibly environmental
I work in disability and part of my job to check Webster pack ingredients aren't reacting with each other.. I monitor positive and negative side effects of any new meds given.
Then 4 years ago, I was given an injection of Maxolon and it gave me tardive dystonia. I became disability working in disability. It helped me understand factors that contribute to movement disorders in my people. I've come to understand that antidepressants do not help people with ADHD, unless they are depressed. Secondly I have learnt about over medicating and microdosing.. and the importance of seeking regular therapy, for reassurance on coping mechanisms.
Coincidentally, a friend of mine who has bipolar and was on lithium, is on kidney dialysis from taking this medication. It showed up on 3 monthly kidney function test several years ago.. Her specialists thought lithium may have triggered Hashimoto's / thyroid cancer. She gets her results on that 3:00 p.m. today
It's unethical to speak about my special needs clients, but feel it's important to mention the movement disorders I recognise from some medications..
Medication care, is such a huge and misunderstood subject.
Benzos and ssris can cause scar tissue of the penis, causing further sadness. Some of these medications take one to two years to wean off, or the patient can have terrible side effects.. it's so very important to dedicate and take medications on time.
When my clients go to hospital, I always speak to the staff about getting medications on schedule. It's never a nice thing, to feel electric shocks going through your body, because you need your anti-depressant medication.
Being responsible with drug intake is a very important and often are misunderstood subject..
Apologies for going on a roll and hope it wasn't too confusing and boring😂😂
I'm all over the shop because so much to say on this broad subject and we can learn so much from Robin Williams, Celine Dion, Michael J fox and Jim Carrey's environments🗝

As an artist my feeling become my art. In all aspects of my life art is involved, so my feelings and energy is what actually creates the art. I think that’s why he’s so passionate in his roles because it’s something he can relate to so much. I know for me, working on surrealism, my art comes to me from dreams which stem from an emotion. All my dreams are extremely vivid and characterize my mental state at the time. My deep passionate state influences my dreams and they become surrealistic almost cartoon like. I remember being a kid and having the most horrible gruesome dreams and it translated to the person I was at the time. Art helped me to encapsulate that aspect of my mind. Making my mind the stencil for my art

I am not sure JC is right when he says deprsesion is a reaction to playing a persona, but I think I know what he means. In my defintion of depression, it is a temporary state of being which comes from a more or less conscious recognistion of the fact that you have been living accordibg to values and beliefs which are not matched or aligned with the external frames around you, so you keep trying this and that, to no avail. Ultimately, if you are not able to second-position yourself and take your Self to the doctor, the deprssion - which you could call a severe form of disillusionment - becomes worse over time as you continue to try to resolve it, and find you can't. Nothing is working, so you end up realising that, reluctantly, the ONLY way to knock it down, and to have any form of peace from the pain you feel, is to kill your body - which means committing suicide. I have known several people who were suicidal, and they all said the same thing to me. I asked them 'if you could find a way of reframing how you see the world, and forge some new values that felt good and helpful to you, would you still want to kill yourself?' They all said no. Another thing that was quite startling: they all believed there was life after death and that after death, they would go to THAT place - that life after death - and would be able to feel peace. Suicidal ideation is an expression of the need for spiritual transcendence... and that means that a person who feels that way is a highly spiritual being and needs this to be taken into account when therapists are working with them. I wonder how many therapies do that?....not many, I imagine.

To become a famous celebrity, you must be adored and admired by a good amount of people (not everybody, but a good size of crowd to sell movies/books/live shows etc). Most celebrities create a persona that achieve this goal ( what I mean is how they appear in interviews and in public, not just in their acting roles). In the process, it is not uncommon that they lose themselves. I can imagine it is not mentally healthy to act like this whole other (fake) person for too many waking hours of your life.

I played in bands for a long while and often had to perform when I was ill. Nobody ever said "Are you ok?" because I pretended to be myself, knowing it would only be an hour or so before I could go home and hide. I would rarely enjoy the music but I concentrated on putting on a "show". I think I sometimes seemed more dynamic when I was depressed; the anger and frustration. Primal Screaming. Dick Cavett (google) had terrible depression but had to do a talk show every night. So he did, in extreme distress, but he knew how to fake it. I've never been a fan of Carrey. I'm sure he's had depressive episodes but 'deep-rest' ? Welcome to Hollywood.

Who are you being when you are detached from all of them? I am in exactly that position, and have been since I was 17, when I had an out-of-body experience in a hospital. I find it can step into any of them, at will, or stay in none of them, in the non-space, the non-biological molecules, I can be in the space between the atoms. Funniliy enough it feels mercifully peaceful there, blissful actually, and very calming. In this position I can see everything, everyone, and witness with a depth I can't have when I am associated into any one of those entities or roles. Question: where does an ego end and an archetype start? Or are they the same? I somehow feel not. I feel that any one ego can play the role of an archetype at any time during its lifetime. So there is an enormous interplay here between entities and their perspectives.

Hey Dr Syl, love the channel! Just a challenge on your statement in the video that Robin Williams committed suicide due to depression. I believe that he chose to commit suicide due to the worsening effects of Lewy body dementia (LBD), from which he was suffering. I know that a paper was published from a professor at UC Davis in 2016 that stated, "Robin Williams was suffering from relationship problems, financial problems, drug addiction, and major depression. All of these factors led to his suicide." However, I think it's important to recognise that this paper was speculative and is not an accurate reflection of what has subequently been claimed by Williams' family.

I believe Jim Carey follows Advaita (Non-Duality) in particular. In Advaita there is nothing but consciousness/story. The story of what is, the story of a self, the story of experiences, the story of thoughts, cannot be separated from consciousness. There is no in here, and out there, but also we cannot say that its all one; hence Advaita means 'NOT TWO', not Duality, as the nature of 'this' cannot be defined, but it certainly is NOT duality!

My impression of Jim Carrey has been for many years that he tries way too hard (over-acts) to be someone else. He has chosen not to be himself even a little in most of his films. A few of his movies are really good, but his over-acting is a turn off for me.
