The U2 version is one of the most important songs of my youth, the Metallica version is one of my favourite of their songs...and now Chris just blew my fucking mind by putting them together!
Same. “Haunting“ is a great way to describe it. Knowing what we now know about how difficult it was for him at times up to and including the night he ended his life, it makes songs like this so much more poignant. Obviously the lyrics were originally written about a man coming home from war. But I think the symbolism of the words are perfect for his life also.
I was fortunate enough to be at this show. I'm so glad I was able to see Chris perform. I remember leaving that show in awe, amazed at both the music and the man. We'll always remember you, Chris. Take care of yourself and each other.
I would've killed to see Chris do this. Absolute genius to combine two very different bands with his unique voice. I am truly glad that you got to see this piece of awesome!
I wasn’t at this show. So I’m definitely jealous of that. But I’ve seen other shows at Santander Performing Arts Center in Reading. Great venue. A lot like Tower Theater in Upper Darby. My two favorite venues to see a show.
Chris was awsome in all those bands and in solo. Both bands were 2 of my favourites bands of alltime. They had great names (and it's rare) with significant and simple meaning (thanks to Chris) and amazing songs that sounded like no one else. I would love your input on our last video from our first album. It got the attention of one of my heroes Joe Bouchard (ex bass player founding members of BÖC) who is following us on Soundcloud but returns from people who likes same music is always the best. If you have just 3 minutes to listen and a bit more to comment, that would mean the world to me. Keep rockin' : ruclips.net/video/i1fVRW6z3n4/видео.html and Happy new year
They always say that when doing a cover you have to 'make it your own', well he owned two amazing tunes in 'one'. So clever, poignant and now very melancholy. Beautiful.

He took 2 Amazing Songs, & Made 'One' Even more so! It's 2022 Chris. We'll Never forget you Or, All of the absolute Genius music you gave to us! Thankyou! ❤️
I still believe this Man. For All that he has given. In Every respect. Music Left with us over the years. Is highly underrepresented! Ok. Some may disagree. But. We're talking about Cornell here!
My God he made everything sound beautiful!!!! Can't believe it's been 5 years and a few days since he left this earth...miss his voice terribly!!!!! Hope you are allowing the heavens to hear your talent!!! 🤘🎤🎸
I have watched this SO many times & never ceases to blow my mind. It’s just as amazing as the first time, every time I watch. The world is but a shrivelled husk without this man’s magical voice, “No one sings like you any more.”
I agree. An Angel Who came down here and then goes back. Outstanding voice and music and the most beautiful man i've ever seen in my life. Hope he have peace now. Sorry for my english. Eva from Gothenburg Sweden
After giving this way too much thought, I have finally decided… If I was given one chance to go back in time, for even just a few minutes, to anywhere I could dream of, I would go to this concert.
I can't imagine who found this video, and then took the time to hit thumbs down. lol Two amazing songs blended seamlessly by an unparalleled performer.
There's an idiot in every crowd. It is the genius of Chris Cornell & not everyone is capable of understanding it all. Sadly, there is no shortage of idiots in the world!
I’ve heard this Metallica song a million times but it’s never hit me like this!!! Jesus this man can make you feel. As a war veteran this had me sobbing.
The best, he pulled me through the darkest time in my life and it is so appreciated that he helped me live through my addictions so I could have the life I have now. My God I wish I could have done the same and been there in his time of need. My hero you will live in all of our hearts and your music will help many people to come. R. I. P Chris
On a Chris Cornell binge tonight remembering another great gone far too soon, and just when I think I seen all the brilliance I can hande...I find this. Sick!!!
RIP brother, that you may be finally at rest. Your music has been such a big part of my life and it really hurts to know you are gone. :( Thank God for youtube. Say hello to Kurt for me.
This is unbelievably genius, not just anyone could blend these two completely different songs into a complete masterpiece‼️R.I.P. BROTHER‼️Say hi to Andrew for me‼️❤️
hearing this version again and really listening makes me so sad. I am a 45 year old Man who is a big fan of Cornell. but wow. what an eye opener. did we all miss something early on. sad. sorry bro. thank you. rip
+Alice Black Err... how is he underrated? He's been the front man for several commercially successful bands (Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Audioslave), has made appearances on the albums of many other successful bands (Zac Brown Band, Carlos Santana, etc.) , and has a successful solo career to boot (just saw him last week). This one random youtube video has a quarter of a million hits alone...
+Alex Wolcott I think +Alice Black means that he should hit more than #7 on the Billboard charts, and stay there more than a week... Meaning, more people should realize quality music when they hear it, not some one-hit-wonder band who won't last past their sophomore attempt... Something like that... Just my opinion...
This is so I unconventionally beautiful! It brought me to tears! That man could sing a song with one word as lyrics and he would make it cool AF! It still hurts that he's gone & I know it will never go away! God bless you for all you left the world, Chris! You made it a better place & your legacy will last as long as music & humanity still exist!
This is incredible! Was just having a conversation about what an amazing vocalist Cornell is and then stumble across this gem. The music and lyrics are both powerful in their own ways and to have them combined like this is quite possibly even better than the two originals. Bravo, bravo, bravo.
Every sing this man covered became his song. His loss will go down as one of the darkest times in musical history. R.I.P. Chris, you will be forever missed.
+whatsupbato Here's hoping indeed. IMO, De La rocha ruins RAtM. So when they became Audioslave with CC, it was sooo perfect. I mean, almost every song from every album is incredible.
Rodney Mills I completely agree, man. I don't like De la Rocha's style. I've been jamming the first Audioslave album quite a bit these last couple of weeks and I wish they would and still do make another album.
The voice, the talent gives me chills. RIP beautiful boy💔 Thank you for leaving us these moments. I can’t listen to either song anymore- because this is the way it should sound 💔

jaw on the floor...matt you said it man!
Absolutely brilliant of him! So cool!
Nail on the head brother. Chills all the way through.
wow that's what u say when u cant find words amazing talent few could ever pull this off or even have the genius to try wow
Never saw this until now. Amlost 6 years after his passing, I'm still finding musical bits and pieces of haunting beauty. Such an amazing musician.

Just heard this dual-cover for the first time today, and I completely agree.
Same. I'm mad now because my soul needs more of him
Same ❤
Check out all his acoustic covers on spotify. Man was brilliant.
guy could play the spoons while singing the instructions for Head and Shoulders and it would be fuck'n beautiful
I agree! I'm in love with that voice!
+Julz Bergener indeed , one of the bests of all time, no arguments need be applied.
+Jay Touhey You're right, let's ask him.
Amongst anyone, thanks for trying though

How freakin' genius is this song?!? It's like two Ones in One!
+Jason Heavner according to peter frampton one and one makes one...
Those are Who lyrics not Frampton.
+Jason Heavner I know, isn't it Class!
Twones
don't forget Harry Nillson and Three Dog Night!!
Hearing Chris sing "Please God take me" at the end is heartbreakingly poetic now
absolutely
Makes me cry every time I listen. So sad.
Part of me believes he knew what he was saying
he knew, and and i wish more people had the strength say it like it he did.
Why you have to say that? Fuckin...
this man could sing the entire McDonald's menu and it would sound incredible
I have a feeling that you're comparing Metallica to McDonald's!
"i wake up and can not seeee...... just like diabetis from a McFlurryyyyyy....."
Indeed :)
Alejandro Palacios dam truth lol
Alejandro Palacios I've always said he could read the damn phone book and I'd listen, awestruck.
They always say that when doing a cover you have to 'make it your own', well he owned two amazing tunes in 'one'. So clever, poignant and now very melancholy. Beautiful.
The beauty of your statement? He wasn't through owning covers of great songs. He covered Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U" and absolutely CRUSHED it.
I'm amazed at his mind. I thought this would be funny, but I'm stunned by how beautiful it is.

I love this. Never in a million years would I have thought to blend those two songs together as beautifully as Chris did. He's a genius!
totally agree
Susan Stanbrough my words exactly
Susan Stanbrough yes, he was...
...was 🥺
This shows you how incredible the melody is on U2's One. You can put drastically differently lyrics to it and it still sounds amazing
Sniper15252001 And how soulful James Hetfield can be with his lyrics. When it's not him barking them at full volume, of course.
Agree with both of you!
The melody for U2 is great and I actually didn't appreciate Metallica's lyrics fully until I heard them through this
U can transform any melody to any lyrics easily - this foes not show anything
No one else would have even thought of doing this, except Chris cornell, pretty much sums up his genius, we love and miss you chris.

Jesus that song has a whole new meaning to me now. Metallica is awesome but he took those lyrics from one and made it his own. He was a legend.

Thoroughly agreed! What an exceptional talent paired with stirring lyrics.
Marc Britt sad His prayer was answered, if God took him, I guess... RIP CC 5.17.17
And now the context of him singing for God to please take me....
I'm still staring... much more chilling like this but I have to wonder if it's the delivery or the relevance to current events. Likely both.

I feel so blessed, I watched and heard him two days after my birthday in 1994.

Bit late. But just found out about this gem. From 3 artists I listen to at a constant. This is epic. Thanks Chris. RIP legend.
