My dad drove a school bus when I was young. One kid brought a nest like that on the bus in the winter. Because it was warm in the bus, the hornets started coming out. Dad grabbed it and threw it out the door. Coulda been ugly.

What an interesting video. There was a wasp nest underground on my property in Running Springs CA, a few years ago. I encountered it one day when I was cutting the grass and several of the little gits attacked me! I called in an exterminator, who killed the insects and unearthed the top of the nest for me to see, and he told me that this was one of the largest nests that he'd seen in his job. Unlike yourselves, I did not take it apart. There was no way that I was touching that thing!

Calm down. It was most likely abandoned. Wasps start building the nests in spring and usually goes until fall- then they abandon them- leaving the queen to hibernate since she is the only one who can survive the winter. And nests are not reused.
Oh and the queen doesn't stay inside the nest- she finds other means of shelter to survive by.

as a guy you grew up in a rural area in Canada I gotta say you guys need to get away from the city more often lots of neat stuff can be found and as a kid I loved catching different bugs and frogs, I recommend camping trips learning how to start a fire without a lighter or matches, making a shelter out of stuff you find in the woods and looking at the stars all awesome stuff and it gets you away from technology for a few days which is good for the soul.
