- In this powerful interview, John Carlson shares his story of survival during the TET Offensive of 1968. John was a member of Alpha Company 1/6 Infantry, part of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. On February 8, 1968, he lost 19 of his brothers at the Battle of Lo Giang, where he was wounded and awarded the Bronze Star for Valor. John fought at the Battle of Hill 352, where Finnis McCleery was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Terrific story John, especially 22:45 with screaming papasan & family, then back to perimeter to hear CO tell you "get your ass back out there!" You knew about keepn your men alive....say Yes Sir...then do something else. And NEVER go back to where you WERE, Charlie was waitn to catch US doing something stupid. Then working FIRE Dept....a lifetime of service. Thanks.
I was at Fort Hood at the same time John was in 1967 and 1968. In October of 1968 I went to Vietnam and worked in the same area he describes.

I think most people don't realize what brutally hard work combat in the mountains is. I don't think it matters whether the mountains are in Vietnam or Afganistan.

Alan’s interview is on this channel. He walked point most of his tour…Was wounded three times, and awarded the Silver Star for his actions on Hill 352. He is well known by all the men of Alpha Company 1/6.
