Leaves room for extended magwell, a Stan Chen custom magwell is an option designed specifically for this gun, and comes standard on the target model. The frame has a nice flared magwell as is. But the gun does come with one flush fit that does not have that gap on the 9mm version.
Nice review! I have a Kimber 1911 in .45 that I bought new in 2008. Very accurate and dependable. It’s good to see Kimber delving into the more traditional 2011 market.
@@yourface3154There's a difference between a fat 1911 like the Para Ordnance (which now exists through RIA) and the 3 piece 2011 style that Kimber went for.
I literally have been looking at a Jacob gray “2011” or the Romulus. I said to myself just yesterday, “why can’t someone make this in a .45acp”. I have ammo left over from my XDS that I’ve gotten rid of and I don’t need another 9mm. I know rock island has the DS, but no optics cut…… and here comes Kimber!
It was mostly a magazine issue. Until Kimber gave Checkmate some encouragement to pump out of .45 2011 magazines, you were stuck with MBX mags that run $100+.
Please look up SaRUSA’s K2 45 - it’s a cz clone that is a 14+1 capacity firearm that’s all steel. Has a smaller profile than this, about size of a g17. Handles like a spicy 9mm. And though it’s not optics ready, you can have it milled for one.
Only gripes I have right out of the box with this amazing new pistol is the slide serrations look rather shallowly machined into it and that magazine hangs wayyyy down out of the bottom of the magazine well for my liking. I would totally run this blaster with some custom cut grip tape inlayed into the serrations, install a RMR HD on the optic plate, and run the Target model's extended magwell or one rather similar to it so the magazine basepad area sticking down looks more integrated into the grip itself... likely get the black colored version in 9MM since I have 9MM pistols already. Nuff said.
I have an old Kimber Ten II Gold Match .45, it's a double stack with stainless slide/barrel, and a polymer frame. It's a pretty sweet shooter. The 2k11 looks amazing.
Thanks for the review Unk!!! All this time I've been commenting on you channel on when is somebody going to do a true 45 ACP 2011?! And here it is. Smith & Wesson or Colt made their version in 45 ACP. That's when I would join the 2011 concept.
They've done .45 2011s ever since they were released. The recent problem has been getting Checkmate to make .45 magazines. Otherwise, your options were old STI magazines that needed the user to "tune" in order to kinda work or spend $100+ on MBX magazines. Thankfully, Kimber is big enough to make Checkmate to start making .45 magazines again.
Great to see Kimber moving forward with the 45 ACP. I have a double-stack 45 2011 but I had to have it custom built because no one was/is doing them. The video isn't over at the point I am writing this, but I REALLY wish they did NOT HAVE a LCI. It just really dirties an optic and isn't needed IMHO. Otherwise looking nice
@ Yup saw that and it’s the case with all my SROs on my other guns, too (I have 4 SROs). But not everyone runs those. That’s why S&W got innovative and angled theirs forward. Still not needed, but they improved on it haha
ITS LOOKS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING BEAUTIFUL, SUPER QUALITY, FINISH IS AMAZING, I'd like the 9 with more rds. Don't like the shinny mag hanging out below the well on 45. I like the grip texture.
You provide some good information in your videos , but I wish you would shoot some other types of ammunition in addition to FMJ. People want to know if these guns will feed hollow points.
How to break that gun down with the toolless guide rod. Pull slide back, engage the catch at the front of the guide rod. This takes the tension out of the spring. Push the slide forward so the notch on the slide matches the bump on the slide stop. Push the slide stop out. It's super easy now because there's no tension on the spring. Push the slide forward, remove the toolless guide rod, push the barrel out. Clean. Reassembly. Place the barrel in the slide. Insert toolless guide rod. DO NOT LET THE SPRING GO BACK. Place slide back on. You should see the link. Since there's no tension, it's easy to put the slide stop back in. Release the spring and it's done.
@Sootch00 @15:22 They have a Marvel cut in the slide to eliminate the slide catching on the disconnector. That’s another reason why it’s so smooth to rack the slide (in addition to the DLC coating).
There are a few, but they're not common. I don't know why. Girsan and Rock Island are the two obvious ones. Tisas has started doing double stacks in 9mm, I'm hoping they'll jump in the fray with other chamberings.
Interesting factory work on the stripper rail seen at 15:22. Generally you only see gunsmiths cut an angle like that into it with hand filing to let the slide glide over the disconnector more smoothly. I’m not sure why this isn’t universal with higher end 2011’s. I’m surprised you didn’t discuss it a bit.
I spotted that also, had to rewind and pause - Marvel cut! He mentioned the slide running smooth without the obvious lurch from the disco, but didn't really get into the technical side of that.
The mag sticking out that far for a 13rd is ridiculous. Especially as other reviewers have stated you can load that mag to 15rds. If that was a flush fit 13rd I'd say it would be a perfect addition as a DS 45 is something we haven't seen since the Para days.
Greta video sootch always love the content. Kimber makes beautiful firearms but I just wished the function matched to appearance. Why not make the mag seat in the grip, it looks terrible for the factory mags to hang out like that.
Great video. For $1,800 - $2,000 I would consider instead buying a S&W M&P 2.0 (.45 ACP or 9mm), installing an Apex trigger, and getting accessories and practice ammo instead. I had one of the original Para-14s, and really liked it, but today - for that kind of money - I would buy something else.
Yeah, I'm prone to agree. As much as I like 1911s, and I get they're not something that can be made as cheap as an M&P...I can't justify spending *that much* on a single *pistol.* Rifle...maybe. To each his own I guess.
The “traditional” chambering for a 2011 is 38 Super or 9mm. They were originally produced as a high capacity platform for IPSC competition. It looks great, and I’d probably get one if they produced it in 38 Super.
Technically STI and SVI made then in many calibers, starting in the mid 90s. When 45 was far more popular than 9mm. But they also made them in 40 S&W, 10mm, and 357 Sig. So the 'traditional' 2011 caliber is all of them.
The gun world is a strange one indeed. When American companies improve on the 1911, everyone can't get enough of it and loves them. "Take My Money". But when CZ improves polymer pistols like making the CZ P10, hardly anyone cares and the price is less than 400 dollars. I don't get it. I think CZ will leave the American market altogether. We American's are too stupid and only like 1200 dollar and up pistols.
I could see them maybe slowing down on some polymer framed options. But CZ leaving the US entirely? Not with ownership of Dan Wesson and Colt. And the huge slice of pie CZ now has in competition realm. But I agree, it's sad that they're more affordable, working-man's guns don't seem to get as much love here.
As a soldier in the US Army, I carried a 1911 in Iraq in 2007/08....with 10 rnd Wilson mags, I never felt "Out gunned"
I gotta say that gap the magazine is leaving really grinds my gears
Yup. Really ruins the look of the piece.
...A common look in ds 1911's

People selling magwells
Kimber. Kimber sells guns with mags that don't fit.
For a competition gun, it is the standard. This allows for ease of use and speed, hence the custom magwell offered on the target model.
