- Walter Payton broke two of Jim Brown's records during a 20-7 victory over the New Orleans Saints in 1984. The call of Joe McConnell and Brad Palmer was recorded over the TV video. The majority of their radio audience watched the game on TV with the sound turned off and the radio turned on. Their broadcasts produced more revenue than any other radio station doing NFL games, but WBBM lost the rights following the 1984 season.
That's just beautiful. There will never be a more beloved or classy player.
This puts tears in my eyes. What a legend
I hear ya
I watched this game on television. One of the things I remember from the highlights (not from the broadcast) was how classy the New Orleans Saints were after Payton's run. It was like they were pushing each other in an effort to get to Walter to congratulate him.
Lol 😂😆😶 I noticed that too
Simply beautiful. He breaks the record, then helps the opponents up after the play. The greatest running back ever.
I can't make the case that he's the greatest at running the football, but he is the greatest all-around RB I've ever seen.
He would get up faster after being tackled by whoever tackled him. Demoralizing and negating anything good the opponent did. The toughest player to ever play the toughest game.
My favorite part is the love shown from every player and officials. Great respect for this man..legend
we miss you Sweetness! RIP
We all miss him. We never heard about no misconduct on his behalf what a great man 😥
I was at this game when i was 10 years old. Walter Payton is the greatest player all time. There is no arguement that can be made.Payron was a humble mans mam. True team playeer. And a leader.
I was at this game. Payton deserved it and Brown thought the world of him which was saying something.
Jim brown was a monster payton fan.u dont get that outta jim.
Walter Payton is the best running ever in the NFL..Period!
Bum Phillips was the Saints coach who had class to shake hands.
My favorite part of the clip. He shook his hand before his own coach.
Sweetness forever loved and missed 💟❤️
Loved watching Walter Payton! My favorite football player ever! What an amazing experience it was to watch him play!
Greatest game i ever attended as a kid
Thomas Bork I was at the game as well
Thank you for posting this! Joe McConnell is my grandpa, and it sure is great to hear some of his greatest calls ever!
Blake Lundy i remember when he used to do the indiana high school girls basketball state final four. especially when my high school east chicago Roosevelt won state titles in 1977 and 1979
Very sad for your loss. Many Vikings and Twins memories of your Grandfather. Sincere condolences from Twin's territory and we thank him for his sharing his special talents with us here in Minnesota. I, also, lost a part of my childhood today..........

He was the best with brad palmer
Love the radio calls of Walter's runs, takes me back to my youth!
I realize how very fortunate I was to have witnessed the greatest player to ever put on the uniform, my hero, the late, great Walter Payton! RIP
I forever love sweetness! Even as a lifelong chiefs fan.his run vs the chiefs is historic.
My favorite football player of all time!
Man how I miss that guy! I remember when he passed, Chicago literally shut down... What a great man...
The most beloved legend in football . Love this video. Thank you
Thank you too!
The Ultimate Class act of any sport!!!
I miss him so much, real talk 😥
Da best ever that was my hero as a kid
I can’t believe The Chicago Bears 🐻 had so much talent on that team. Unbelievable
Look at the Saints congratulating Walter. All class.
Walter was the best, ever. And he did not kneel. He is the best ever.
John Bennett I agree with you on that
Joe Mcconnell was very underrated and, unfortunately he doesn't get enough credit for his role as a Bears announcer
Amen to that.
Agreed
He was awesome, I listened to him call many great payton runs over time, a real gem!
We haven't had anything close to that quality of a broadcast on the radio since he left the Bears radio booth.
How special, even the other team comes over to congratulate you....couldn't of happened to a better man, a true champion
This makes me happy.
Rest in Peace Joe McConnell
BTW in Chicago you had a choice that day: Watch Walter Payton break the record, or on the other channel watch the Cubs play the 5th game of the MLB playoffs......awful that they made me choose....but there was no way I was going to miss this.
I remember this game beginning at 12:00pm while the debacle in San Diego starting at 3:00pm. The color man on AM78 was Chicago Sports News Veteran Brad Palmer.
Good choice! Walter always came first on my Sundays, ALWAYS!
That is incorrect...the Bears game started at noon Chicago time. The disaster in San Diego started around 3pm, over an hour after Walter had broken the record.
I remember this night. lol. So great
that was great even the saints players congrats walter
November 1984 brought high flying draftee Michael Jordan to Chicago. 0:18 Walter Payton would not be outdone.
And the Saints defenders are the first ones to congratulate him.
I would have loved to see his reaction to Emmitt Smith breaking his record
Walter was all class he'd have been the first to congratulate Emmitt. He only died two or three years before Emmitt broke the record so I suspect he knew Emmitt would probably get it unless he got hurt. In fact they knew each other, Payton actually thought the world of Emmitt and encouraged him to keep playing after one of Emmitt Smith's injuries when Emmitt thought his career might be over. Ironic that he encouraged the man who would eventually break his record, but Walter was that kind of guy. He was human, I'm sure it would have stung him a little but he would have been happy for Emmitt just the same.
Sweetness was classic human ever soul train Dancer scored most xollege football points ever 434 from Jackson Mississippi small school 1975 vs vikings had 275 yards rushing and was a one man wrecking crew before 1985 super bowl shuffle.
The best radio announcers in bears history
Thank you very much.
