    I think for Brendon they used the Sydney one, which wasn’t one of his best versions for Bohemian but is still very good. I’d recommend watching the DOAB version (Death Of A Batchelor Tour) because that’s his best and shows his ability to actually sing the song. Great reaction btw.

      @@CalebColesMusic Yes, what Klain 07010 said is correct. That was from the Sydney concert. On that tour Bohemian was usually song 24 out of 28 songs, but not sure about that concert. They may have played it earlier in the set since it was being filmed for the American Music awards tribute to Queen. I do know that with the time change and the heat in the arena his voice was probably effected. So thank you Caleb for talking at the beginning and through out the video about how different variables can affect the performance.
      A couple informational things for anyone reading this to know. This performance was the debut of the guitarist Mike Naran with the band. His first time playing in front of an audience with Panic!, first time playing Bohemian Rhapsody for over 13,000 people and first time being filmed for TV.
      Panic! is also the only band that plays the FULL song, even Queen just plays the recording of the middle section.

    If you want to hear the "Freddie" intended (album)sound, Marc Martel nails it every time. I'm with you on the Adam Lambert version, he is always his own type of songbird ( more musical theater) and I love it. Freddie actually did a little bit of musical theater and loved it. He would ha e done so well with that if he had a chance. Brendan watches a lot of these comparison videos and he really has no idea how he does what he does. Not professionally trained and doesn't always understand chest/mix/head voice distinction. He posted a video of himself watching Rebecca Vocal Athlete reviewing him. It was very cool, but revealing (adorable) where he didn't know mechanics. Freddie is the rock star because he got so many head banging rockers to listen to something different and new and semi-classical back in the late 70's and 80's. He was different and made us (my age group)aware that music could be more. More than the driving rock or even new pop sound so typical of those days. This song still doesn't make any real sense, nobody understands the lyrics, but my gosh we are drawn to it and can't not sing along!! Thanks Caleb for another really unusual and interesting review. We really do get more education from you than anyone else!! You and yours stay well!!

    Adam Lambert is the best singer I've ever seen live - he has phenomenal vocal technique, artistry and amazing chemistry with the rest of the band. Precisely because he doesn't imitate Freddie, he has been Queen's lead vocalist for the past decade and QAL performs at sold-out stadiums and arenas. His solid vocal training allows him to preserve and develop his voice without any signs of wear or fatigue. On tour almost every night for two and a half hours, he performs the world's most difficult catalog - the Queen's songs, and finally leaves TSMGO and WATS and hit E5 or A5. Then our jaws start to fall ...

    This is not a great comparison. It is Freddie's song, he can perform it as he please. He just belts out those Bb4 notes without any head voice. That is damn difficult to do. I have never seen any of the others do anything like that, and I have watched a lot of their material. All of them just switches to mixed voice. Freddie didn't use any mixed voice. It is something opera singer don't even attempt. That was Freddie's style in the 80's, he also hated doing performances that is exactly like the studio version. He improvised a different performance every night. He changed his image in the 80's to sound more macho, but he still performs with much more emotion then the rest. But I will give Brendon Urie some credit, at least he is not making a living on singing someone else's music, he is a good songwriter and musician in his own right.

    • @papabearM3
      @papabearM3 4 года назад +5

      LOL
      1. Opera singers do use mixed voice all the time in fact.
      2. Freddie was NIT an opera singer.
      3. Belting Bb4 is NOT HARD to belt out, unless you have no range whatsoever. But that wasn’t Freddie’s problem. Marc and Brandon can do it in their sleep. They just choose not to escalate to belting at the very begining of the song because they, both very astute singers, know that they have the rock section in a verse and an operatic interlude to build to! No singer should start at 10 and end at 10. Building a song up properly is a sign of a mature and seasoned singer. Both Marc and Brendon do it, Adam uses mixed vocals at 8 to begin with, so he has nowhere to go. So the song falls flat on him: his dynamics are just atrocious! Freddie was Freddie and did as he pleased. It’s his song from A to Z.
      4. Freddie didn’t hate doing his studio versions, especially in the 80s. He simply couldn’t since his voice was trashed by then. When he could, he did attempt singing his own studio versions to his own demise, I mist add. His studio versions were rarely a one-take.
      6. Every single singer in this world makes a living off covers! LOL To various extent, Freddie sang covers throughout his career, Lambert does only that. Both Marc and Brendon are solid songwriters/musicians with a wealth of original material to their name! I find it so narrow-sighted to state that Brandon is the only one who doesn’t live off songs written by others. Just recently he performed Under Pressure with the Roots and BoRhap is a staple at his concert.

    • @ZENOBlAmusic
      @ZENOBlAmusic 4 года назад +2

      @@papabearM3 You are just repeating what I said. I said opera singers does use head voice. It is fairly obvious. Marc switches over to mixed voice from F4 - G4. You would never catch him singing Bb4 or B4 notes without using mixed voice, same thing for Adam Lambert. Opera singers does use less mixed voice then pop singers. Freddie also sang with mixed voice, every night he performed, especially during the 80's. He could hit Bb5 notes night after night even when he was sick, Marc and Adam Lambert have only hit a Bb5 note once in their lives. This is despite the fact that Freddie was a lower tenor then these two:
      ruclips.net/video/j--af9kt3RM/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/r2Byk3ybyv4/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/FVO5Woq1Whs/видео.html
      Freddie could sing these songs with mixed voice, if he had had wanted to, there are many examples of him doing just that, but generally he decided to take a different route. It adds an edge to the singing, and an element of danger, because it is difficult to sing without mixed voice.
      ruclips.net/video/-BuILTO_p9k/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/kO_w7GHMAUw/видео.html
      Freddie always changed songs from studio versions. He said you might as well use a cardboard cutout and play the album version if you just want to recreate studio versions. Rock used to be about improvisation, Led Zeppelin often performed versions of Dazed And Confused that was 30 minutes long. And funny enough, people often enjoy Queen's live versions more then their studio versions.
      Nevermind that Freddie was really able to run around on stage all night long as well. Marc and Adam barely breaks a sweat, while performing. Freddie knew how to really entertain the crowds, that is the purpose of doing live performances.
      Freddie understood how to entertain, there is a reason why he is often chosen as the best front man, and why Queen have legendary live performances such as Live Aid.
      Sure all singers starts with covers and sometimes do a variety of covers. I wouldn't call them artists, they are vocalist. Very few singers just completely makes a living out of performing and copying someone else who has been dead for basically 30 years. Ironic how you lambaste Freddie, if it wasn't for Freddie, Marc wouldn't be making any money right now. He earns his living by copying someone else.
      People study Freddie's compositions at school and university, his music will be remembered for a while yet.
      We do agree on one thing, Adam does not have good dynamics, and he can't sing in falsetto. He basically has one mode. You would never see him singing something You Take My Breath Away.

    • @lukebuddy4759
      @lukebuddy4759 4 года назад +3

      @@ZENOBlAmusic Actually Adam has great falsetto, but seldom use it. I’m not a fan of his, so I don’t really follow his career much, but from some his solo songs I’ve heard, he does use it more for his solo music.
      I Googled a bit and he mentioned in 2012 that what he did with his high notes weren’t falsetto to cleared up some confusion (people described his high notes as falsetto, even nowadays) but apparently in 2015, ever since his 3rd album, he said he embraced his falsetto more. And from what I’ve seen, he actually used falsetto in his Idol performances as well, for contrast and texture (some examples from top of my head, ‘Ring of Fire’ live version and ‘Feeling Good’ studio version). He can switch from chest/mix to falsetto and switch back, in one breath as well.
      As far as I can see, Adam has chest, mix, head and falsetto. He didn’t use falsetto for Queen performances but he uses chest, mix and head. His ‘Save Me’ version is softer, more like a lullaby too where majority of the song he uses combination of his soft chest/mix/heady mix/head. He definitely has more than 1 mode and has dynamics. I don’t think ‘You Take My Breath Away’ would be any issue for him.

    i'm just gonna plop my exact comment from another reaction video to this comparative video because it truly summarizes my personal standpoint on who sang it best.
    MM honestly is an improved version of freddie in certain ways...hear me out!
    firstly, MM is definitely a more skilled pianist than freddie was, & there's no shame in that, it's just how it is.
    next, MM takes excellent care of his voice & health in general which, if we're being honest, freddie clearly didn't; unfortunately that factored into his live performances in particular.
    MM can sing 2-3 hour long concerts of queen songs night after night after night ad nauseum, keeping the quality top notch.
    MM deserves credit at the very least for being an excellent musician & vocalist, no matter what you think of him & his queen covers... he also does phenomenal covers of everyone from radiohead to whitney houston & lots in between.

      He is not a better pianist then Freddie. He would never be able to compose any of the masterpieces Freddie did from scratch, he is good at copying other people. His voice simply doesn't have the same amount of power as Freddie's voice. This is the exact same problem with Adam Lambert as well. When they perform actual rock songs they sound weak. Yes he can sing night after night because he never puts his all into it. He is just constantly singing in weak head voice. There is nothing daring about that. Of course he will still be singing like that in 10 years time, but no one will care. If you want to stand out, you have to be far more daring and original.

      Also, Marc has composed masterpieces already and keeps going at it! Give him some time. The problem is that Marc writes pop-rock, not a popular style at the moment. But his How Many Kings has become a modern Xmas classic.
      Now to the weakness of both Adam’s and Marc’s voices. Dude, please, stop talking about something you clearly don’t understand! Adam belts all the time. To belt you have to support with the diaphragm. Marc is more versatile and uses every register skillfully: He goes smoothly from chest to mixed to head to falsetto and back in Killer Queen, as an example, within a couple of phrases. Da faq you are talking about? No, he doesn’t sing in his head register all the time! No, his voice is not weak at all! “Darling and original” can be accomplished with musicianship (which is what Marc does by changing arrangements, style, etc) and doesn’t have to be a riffing vortex, as in Adam’s overboard vocalizations, for instance.
      The story of the song still is and should be of the outmost importance, not originality for the sake of originality, not singing for the sake of singing, which someone like Angelina Whateverhernameis and Adam Lambert and almost every reality TV singers who lack musicianship don’t seem to understand. The song, its original composition and its lyrics, is what people connect to on the emotional level, not high notes and not riffs. Those who are impressed by riffs and high notes have been watching too much reality Tv and should seriously consider taking a course in music appreciation!

      @@papabearM3 Obviously a better pianist? I have previously looked for information on Marc's training, couldn't find anything. Freddie was at least classically trained until grade 5. Marc really doesn't have the skill to compose something like The March Of The Black Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, Bring Back That Leroy Brown, My Melancholy Blues, Don't Stop Me Now, Killer Queen, It's A Hard Life, The Millionaire Waltz. Even something like We Are The Champions is a deceptively complex song:
      ruclips.net/video/sUuB7zs4ej4/видео.html&t. Freddie composed music in every genre that was available to him. Was it popular to add mock opera to rock songs? No it wasn't. Even a song such as Killer Queen has a lot of Vaudeville, which hasn't been a popular genre in music for about a 100 years. Freddie wrote a rockabilly song in 1979, that was a popular genre in the 50's. Freddie did a gospel leaning song such as Somebody To Love, it wasn't exactly a mainstream sound at the time. Freddie composed some of the first thrash metal, a whole new genre. He basically invented the opera/ classical crossover genre. His song Barcelona was a hit song, it was no.2 on the UK charts, opera and classical music wasn't exactly fashionable at the time. The point is if your music is good enough it will stand out, it doesn't matter what is popular at the time. This is true for most of the well known and best selling artists. If The Beatles were simply copying American rock music at the time, they would never have been as popular. Pink Floyd's first hit song was about a transvestite who was stealing clothes from washing lines, would the band have become that popular if they were simply repeating what everyone else was doing? Freddie is one the best songwriters of last century.
      Generally I also have an issue with singing competitions. They remove all artistry from music. Singers usually just tries to oversing everything, they often end up destroying the original message of the song. Music is about telling a story and delivering a message, a song isn't written for a singer to show off his voice.
      People don't understand it these days, but rock is connected to the blues. It is not about singing with a pretty voice and good technique. Both Adam and Marc just doesn't have the personality for singing proper rock songs. Singing rock is often about power, aggression and rawness. I just don't see it with these two. They would never sing or be able to perform something like this:

    Yes differences between technology when Freddie was around needs to be thought about. The quality of the equipment recording the sound. And other factors. Overall for me Freddie sung it the best. Adam is second best. The others are too clinical and can't carry emotion like Freddie and Adam can. As I said Freddie at his best is better than the others imo. He has the best overall balance of all the attributes a great singer needs.

    Adam Lambert has a fantastic technique and a really nice tone, but I like him the least out of the four here. I actually don't much like him singing Queen songs in general, to be honest. His performances often feel flat and soulless to me. He also adds way too many "frills" at bad moments, for my tastes.

    • @CalebColesMusic
      @CalebColesMusic  4 года назад +5

      I feel like Adam is hit or miss with people who like Queen's music, for sure. I love his voice; I think some Queen songs really suit him and others not so much in terms of emotional impact. But that is to be expected when you're singing songs someone else wrote, particularly someone like Freddie!

    • @Urgelt
      @Urgelt 4 года назад +5

      Agree about the frills, but Lambert's mixed voice quality rescues him from the trash heap. He has a great technique for that.
      I wouldn't call him 'soulless.' Too harsh. Maybe a better word is 'calculated.' He doesn't seem to be feeling the song's passion in every word sung. His performance seems more intellectual than emotional, and the frills make it seem a bit contrived. I am remembering that the song's original intent - faded over the years due to familiarity - was to surprise and shock us with its many lyrical and musical twists and turns. It's supposed to be raw; the music is motivated in different directions at various points to express different emotions. If approached intellectually, as Lambert seems to do, the emotional impact is muted. He goes where the score tells him to go, just because that's how it's written.
      Eh, maybe you're right. Emotionally flat. Not quite 'soulless,' but it's as if he's singing it because that's his job and because he can, not because he feels and is expressing the song's emotions. He's technically competent, though. That counts for a lot with me.
      Right now I feel I'm indulging in analysis rather than issuing complaints. They're all worth a listen.
      However, a good singer, at his best, savors every phrase, makes you believe he means it. This, more than vocal technique, is really where Freddie shines. There is no coasting with Freddie. He *owns* the song; it's *his* emotions he's expressing. The other three are technically good, each has strengths, they all entertain and please, but they don't manage to own it the way Freddy does. For the others, it's a score to perform, for which their various technical competencies are up to the task. To Freddie, it's raw pain. He's next-level when it comes to sincerity. His technical competencies are also up to the task. Taken as a whole, he's the champ.
      But I wouldn't discard any of them. They're all great singers. Just getting through that monster of a song without the audience throwing rotten fruit is a major feat. It's hard!

      @Vlad27145 4 года назад +5

      @@CalebColesMusic Agreed, Freddie is obviously a very hard act to follow and one thing I do appreciate is that Adam isn't doing a copy paste of what Freddie did. That's a recipe for disaster most of the time, especially since their voices are pretty different. I think though that not only is he not bringing the "right" emotional weight to some songs, but rather none at all. He's fine on some of the more lighthearted songs, but not so much on the deeper ones. Maybe he just can't connect with them, for whatever reason. Or maybe Freddie just spoiled me with his interpretations. To be fair, very few people can manage a good Queen cover. Even Dimash's Show Must Go On was not good at all in my opinion (in terms of interpretation). One of the very, very few occasions where I didn't think he knocked it out of the park.

    • @Vlad27145
      @Vlad27145 4 года назад +2

      @@Urgelt Oh yeah, not taking anything away from him in terms of technique. Not even as a singer in general, which includes being able to emotionally connect to a song and transmit those feelings. He's excellent as a technician and good as an interpreter. Just... not on some of the more "hard hitting" Queen songs, which is unfortunate since he's their current lead singer.
      That's obviously just my opinion and personal taste though. I have no doubt that some may and do disagree.

    • @ZENOBlAmusic
      @ZENOBlAmusic 4 года назад +1

      @@Urgelt The problem is Adam, and Marc Martel have no blues in their voices. They didn't grow up with the blues, and they are not interested in that genre. Freddie sang in a blues band, one of his favorite singers was Aretha Franklin. Rock comes from the blues, if you don't have that understanding or connection then the music can sound soulless, This is exactly what is happening these days. The blues is not about singing with perfection it is about the emotion. Music from the 60's, 70's, 80's and some of the 90's came from that school of thought.
      Vocal coaches would hate a performances such as this: ruclips.net/video/_CRdD2-8kUY/видео.html or this ruclips.net/video/OpKB6OZ_B4c/видео.html
      You will never see Adam or Mark singing See What A Fool I ve Been ruclips.net/video/JofFSDamT-U/видео.html. And it is not really something I would want to see either. They generally sing the rock song pretty badly. They do fine on songs that is somewhat of a ballad but as soon as a song requires grit they just check out.
