This is the worst interview and I love it. I keep coming back to it because the vibes are so awful. They look like they're being held at gunpoint in the back of a van. Tired, bored, uncomfortable energy. I love it. All interviews should be held in the back of some creep ass van.
They certainly got me to hear music in a different way at a pivotal point in my life, at age 14. I miss coming home from school and listening to them super loud.
lol, Avey was being so courteous about the guy who insulted them after the show and then Panda (who has spent the rest of the interview almost completely silent) just straight up talks about beating him.
Despite me listening to these dudes for nearly a decade (holy shit, I just did the math), I have never watched one of their interviews until now. They're very insightful. Love their stuff, always.
+Shawn Standiford I still consider Sung Tongs my favorite of theirs. It was the first I heard back in 2005 and I had no idea music could do what it did. What a wonderful album.
So true. The early-to-mid 00's were such a singular time. The Books, Madvillain, Broken Social Scene, AC, Califone, Basement Jaxx, and many others all put out these records that sounded as if the studio walls had been torn down. Everything breathed, creaked, wandered in from next door, hung out in the over-ripe dusk of late summer, and discovered the recreational uses of cough syrup.

What Josh says at 13:20, though, really resonates with me. I first heard Water Curses back in '06 or '07. Thought it was the worst (I was 13). Now it's one of my favorite songs/EPs. Ever. AC and the members' solo works are some of my life's biggest inspirations. I'm alive because of them.
I think water curses came out in '08, but I'm the same. Maybe a bit older- AC and other musicians are the reason I'm alive and making music myself still!
Were they kidnapped and forced to do an interview in this van? That's the vibe I'm getting. Deakin's just playing with the rope they tied him up with, Avey's content to leave the rope around his neck. Noah's so chill that they didn't need to tie him up.
at 16:10 Dave says"We've never performed on psychedelic drugs," Meanwhile Noah seems deep in reflective thought, before attempting to uphold the reality of Dave's claim. hahahaha. I laughed so hard.
Had the privilege of catching AC live in a small venue in Liverpool called the magnet in 2006, i think? I even went and said hello to them at the bar after their set, Four Tet was playing after them, what a night that was! 🎼💙
oh yeah this was before geo toned down his cosmic powers to become visible in human form. i think that finally happened during the recording of strawberry jam.
johnny vulpine ew, no that rumor of Noah abusing morphine/mescaline was made up pretty heavily. they're all acting the way they do all the time, Josh is pretty friendly and usually leads interviews he's in and Dave is pretty soft spoken. They're not all high out of their minds thats kind of what they're trying to say in this interview....

I don’t know. I thought it was a pretty reasonable response. They admit that psychedelics have definitely informed their art, but that they’re not high on them all the time. Which I absolutely believe. Honestly the best way to create music that mimics the feeling of psychedelics is to create that music influenced by, but not in the depths of, the psychedelic realm. This way you’re gauging the vibes you’re getting from the music from baseline and not experiencing the amplification effect that psychedelics have.
Since this was 2004, this was before Panda Bear had massive success with his solo album (2007). He probably took offense to Deakin calling his music weird / typical (Deakin sounds a bit cancerous here TBH). He has also said that he tried bringing his music to the band but they weren't as into it. Then he put it out on Person Pitch and it was received critically better than any of their previous albums. Very George Harrison esque kind of story.
Cancerous? Wow. Interesting choice of descriptor there. Seems a little harsh. I definitely don’t think he was as sure footed musically as the rest of the group back then though, so I can see where you’re coming from in the sense that he may have seemed less clear about a musical vision. But man, he’s really blooming in his own way. His solo album is absolutely amazing, and his contributions to time skiffs absolutely make it what it is. I kind of view him as the grounding force of the band.
Deakin is cancerous... what? He seems alright, maybe there was some slight tension between him and Noah but I think everybody gets along well with each other. It makes sense that Pandas songs were rejected, them being standalone sounds much better and they let Panda shine through.
Daniel Moore - what the interview you mean? He does tend to werret on like that in several interviews I've seen, and looks like it really winds Noah up!
I love that Panda Bear has to stop and think for a second as to whether or not he's tripped while playing.
I like how their musical aspirations differed.
Deak: I want people to like us.
Panda: I don't care if people like us.
Avey: As long as it feels right.
I know it's like how the hell can you be in a band and have completely different thoughts on music.
Must be incredible chemistry between them or drugs.
Or both.
it still hasnt changed
This is how my band was. Some of us just wanted to make music, some of us wanted to become famous and popular. It didn't last long.
This is the worst interview and I love it. I keep coming back to it because the vibes are so awful. They look like they're being held at gunpoint in the back of a van. Tired, bored, uncomfortable energy. I love it. All interviews should be held in the back of some creep ass van.
The way Dave and Josh immediately lock eyes when Noah's like "...it wasn't that weird." Dave's laugh. Love his jaunty character.
i'm still laughing, it was one of those looks like, "now son, u know ur mother gets upset when you say things like that about her pop rock"
deak discreetly tying a noose mid interview
IT WASNT THAT WEIRD DEAKON
Deakin straight up insulting Panda's earlier work and he isn't having it.
😂
noah loves interviews
They certainly got me to hear music in a different way at a pivotal point in my life, at age 14. I miss coming home from school and listening to them super loud.
damn this hits me deep cus 5 years ago i was 14 doing the same thing
@@sumo6004 a couple of days ago I was 14 doing the same thing.

lol, Avey was being so courteous about the guy who insulted them after the show and then Panda (who has spent the rest of the interview almost completely silent) just straight up talks about beating him.
11:30 Deakin sending subtle messages of how he feels about being in the band
Holy shit I would’ve never picked up on that
deak is just such a friendly boy
should change his name to hamster cheeks
Despite me listening to these dudes for nearly a decade (holy shit, I just did the math), I have never watched one of their interviews until now. They're very insightful. Love their stuff, always.
Sung Tongs was such an important record- I still have never heard anything quite like it- or any of AC's releases for that matter.
I never cared for avant-garde, strange
+Shawn Standiford I still consider Sung Tongs my favorite of theirs. It was the first I heard back in 2005 and I had no idea music could do what it did. What a wonderful album.

+Shawn Standiford Have you listened to Prospect Hummer? It has the outtakes from Sung Tongs just with a different singer.
Only in passing. Vashti Bunyan adds a lovely sound to their work, to be sure.

THANK YOU!!!!👽
the track at 9:37 "206" is "Ice Cream Factory" from the Animal Crack Box set, but I also have it saved as "206" from a live performance.
This is early 2004 if anyone was curious. Geo was working a day job at the time.
Omg that loch raven performance 😭😭
bruh the people there were prolly like "these guys will never amount to anything"
I'll never forget the day I purchased Feels at Virgin Records in SF...sweet 16

18:48 the best part is how fast deak talks, then panda says something in his usual tired self way
Best AnCo interview I have found. Thanks for the upload!

Panda Bear! Something about his quiet, subtle nature lights a fiery fire in me. I love that guy ♡
@Oliver Dreyer ya, like watery wet water

The first time I’ve seen Noah laugh lmaoo
This is also when the car accident happens! Lol
All their faces @ 16:00 when they talk about drugs... They know...
This is probably my favorite Animal Collective interview ever.
Had the privilege of catching AC live in a small venue in Liverpool called the magnet in 2006, i think?
I even went and said hello to them at the bar after their set, Four Tet was playing after them, what a night that was!
🎼💙
Although it looks like this show was just the 3 of them, you can see Geologist does make an appearance at 5:52
oh yeah this was before geo toned down his cosmic powers to become visible in human form. i think that finally happened during the recording of strawberry jam.
17:20 that drumming..
wish this was a song
TIKWID , real song but album/ep version not this wild
Best band of the aughts hands down. Love them.
Panda bear looks classy in this interview.
that version of Did You See the Words is fucken WILD
Weird. There's a car crash as soon as they mention LSD 16:24
holy shit dood what does it mean !!1

avey made that most on the anco forum mentioning getting noah high on morphine in spain or something
"and then i took him outside and beat him" fuck Noah HAHAHA
Panda responding to deakin at 1:41 and deakin constantly looking over to the others to make sure he doesn’t say anything wrong 😭
"I'm Noah and I'm a panda bear." :)

Where did the footage of that show come from? If it really is midway cafe 2004 where can we get a copy? It's incredible
Noah looks so fucking tired lol
+Amber Weitzel he seems kind of irritable during the interview too
I love his comment at 11:54 so much
What does he say? I can't make it out for some reason
+Omar Bider "And then I drug him outside and beat him." Is what it sounds like to me.
Tower Hufham I think he says "took him outside" rather than "drug him outside" and that would make more sense too
and hes been tired ever since
does anyone have a link to download the set the live clips are from? or the full name of the venue/year?
asking the right questions
venue is midway cafe in boston, probably 04 or 05
2004 (just watch it all the way until the end)
I just think panda is a great listener and body language is very animated. And he doesn't take any crap. Lol
"its like this, like, black metal"
noahs drumming on tikwid here is the best ive ever seen him

so freakin funny hahahahahahhahaha
dang the boys listen to burzum nice
This makes me want a metal-ish album from them
let's play a game: how many times deakon says the word "like"?
Tito & Nacho I stopped counting at 40
Nice..old Stuff!…very cool!
speaking of morphine... 14:48
I'd say AC were like the Beach Boys on drugs except the Beach Boys didn't sound anywhere near as interesting as this when they were on drugs.
Listen to the smile sessions
Beach Boys, at least most of them, probably did more drugs
Anyone know the song at 17:19?
It's a early version of Did You See The Words mashed up with and early version of Tikwid.
@@sammay600 oh cool! I've listened to Feels through and through. I'd lose my mind if they did remixes of those.
What's the song at the end?
pretty sure this is 2004.
When was this filmed?
2004
Was geologist touring with them?
Panda Bear's mad about something lol
I think hes just like that.
opi rage
What the hell is up with Panda? He looks so, so out of it.
Touring is a bitchXD See “New Town Burnout”
He doesn't look out of it at all, he looks pissed.
They’re so cute
What's the song that comes in at 17:18? This is a gem of a video, thanks so much.
dave is just so adorable i wish we had been friends im high school
Phi Alencar hi high school I’m Dad
wtf it's weird to see you here
all of the AnCo guys are cute as heck they're just so huggable
"We have been informed by psychedelic drugs" 😂
what year was this?
Noah
animal collective's music would turn a medieval peasant into a fine red mist
16:02
Morphine poster in the background so badass
Fucc... I love this interview
Noah must be on drugs or just pissed off in this interview I stg

Panda Bear is compared more to Brian Wilson, but the George Harrison comparison is more valid

Josh likes to say "like" :)
that's why Noah's so agitated
Muy fans de animal collective
that performance or did you see the words was fucking insane
What year is this interview from?
Possibly between 2005-2006 judging from the songs
pandas hair :O
hey sorry but it's 'freak folk' not 'free folk'
johnny vulpine this is why no one wants to wants discuss stuff with you Johnny. Because you are such a Nanner all the time. Just kidding. You coo
noah seems very agitated
+Sarah Walker yeah, the way he shoots down Deakin @ 1:37 and then gives him a glare!! So unlike the Panda you usually see in interviews.
+Sarah Walker He was probably just really tired
Mike Denby I find it justified; hate to say it but Deakin kind of sucked in that.
Daniel Moore - what the interview you mean? He does tend to werret on like that in several interviews I've seen, and looks like it really winds Noah up!
Mike Denby werret? I really want to understand the point you are trying to make but I can't figure out that word.
pandaaaaaaaa
I'd say animal collective did what pink Floyd did with there music threw the years
They’re only a collective so they can exclude Deak from stuff.
Deak’s on beaks? Haha
These guys do a lot of interviews...
24:45 angry aveyy?
