This has got to be the most in depth, comprehensive guide to softmodding the Wii that I've ever seen. Great timing that you uploaded it just a few weeks ago too, as just this last weekend I found my original Wii and accessories in my storage room. Ultimately I'll install an HDMI mod, but in the meantime I've been wanting to do several tweaks to the video to make the component connection look its best, and saw that several of them require the homebrew channel. It almost feels like a new toy to play with again!
The best, most comprehensive video I have ever seen on this topic. Just bought a Wii today for my 3 year old, and got everything set up without issue. Thank you so much. I waited in line for the Wii on launch with my Mom back in 2006 or whenever it was. It was freezing outside; someone in line had their Wife bring a turkey fryer without the stock pot that we used as a heat source. The cops were called, but the officer that showed up said "that's genius, just don't burn the ToysRUs down." Good times.
"$50"? I ended up getting a Wii console for free, when I found one dumped outside the local Tender Centre. We had parked there, and I noticed the console, with a copy of Guild Wars for PC. I inquired about it to the clerks there, and they said I could have them. I tested it out, because it didn't have any controllers or cables (which I already had at home) and it worked perfectly. It even had a copy of Super Smash Bros Brawl inside! So that was an added bonus! 🤩
I like how you question the £50 price point like everybody is going to find a fabricated “dumped” console outside their local Tender Centre. Thanks for the chuckle, chum.
Gonna get one tomorrow off of marketplace. What's funny is that the wii itself is $30 on average. The controllers however cost the same price if not more than the console itself. Though it's to be expected as the thing that is most liable to break.
@@ICEknightninedepends on color aswell as edition to. One thing im noticing is blue wiis the console itself is getting spookily scarce to find, i find more red than blue. It took me days looking in the market to see a blue one, i kept thinking " i knowwww for a fact there was a blue wii at one point in time" i thought i was going crazy not seeing one. I ordered a wii with 2 remotes 1 red and 1 white with nunchucks power cord for $66 after taxes, i figured since it comes with controllers AND nunchucks, $66 the console was practically free, although i do have to get a sensor bar. But the wii looks to be in near immaculate condition, it even has all the port covers which is somewhat rare no matter the edition.
@@BytesNBits I did, thank you! It was pretty straight forward and I managed to get one game tested.. I have all my backups ready now and just waiting for a bigger usb drive
Had this working flawlessly after following your tutorial. Next day I went to install a few more games on my USB and after that I couldn't get it to initialize. Cant say exactly what fixed it although I was plugging it into USB slot that wasn't closest to the edge when I began experiencing problems. Issues cleared up when I used the other port
For some reason my pendrive was formatted as MBR and it was causing reading problems on my Wii. If anyone is having the same trouble as me just change to GPT and it'll work fine. Thanks for guide !
My homebrewed Wii all the sudden decided to stop working today. I pushed the power button and it turned green, but that was it. No display or audio came through, the disc drive didn’t even try to read the disc and never turned on, and the Wiimote can’t even connect. I have priiloader installed, but I can’t even load THAT even with the power button/reset button method. It was working perfectly last night. The only thing I installed yesterday was CTGP, which had been sitting on my SD card for quite a while. There was an hour worth of updates that had to install, but I’ve never had trouble with CTGP at all on my other Wii. I’ve tried switching different cords/TVs/Power Cords, nothing is helping. Any help would be appreciated. Hoping this isn’t a permanent brick and can be fixed somehow.
I had to do the opposite. Mine wasn’t working as GPT and even got a 2nd Wii thinking the reader wasn’t working but then the other wasn’t neither. Soon as i switched from GPT to MBR the message popped up.
Hi there Bob. I just wanted to say thank you for this extremely in-depth guide. For me to learn anything new I always prefer extremely detailed instructions. I've been struggling for 3 to 4 days now with trying to mod a Wii I found at work so my coworkers could have something fun to do during their downtime. The guides from other content creators I was previously following were fine at first, but every time I opened USB Loader GX it would not detect anything whatsoever, not ever the Wii Channels. However after finding your video I finally got Mario Kart Wii to actually run via USB Loader GX (since that's the one game my coworkers have mentioned wanting to play). So again I want to thank you for making this video and I hope that your channel explodes even more in views, subscribers, and popularity. I do have one question for you though. 1. Does it matter what kind of SATA to USB adapter we use for a HDD? In other videos I watched, they mentioned that some USB 3.0 Flash Drives have compatibility issues with the Wii. Would that apply to SATA to USB 3.0 Adapters as well or would any adapter work just fine?
Thanks for the comments. It's good to hear you got it working. Using a hard drive is much more reliable than a flash drive, but most should work. There may be issues with some drive / adapter combinations but I haven't come across any issues with the 4 or 5 I've used.
@@BytesNBits Hello, your video is extreme helpful :) i would like to know if it is possible to use usb loader gx with games that are directly in the sd card (at least 64Go) that i will use for modding the wii ?
you are a king , you deserve a big thank you for all this effort , i have seen a lot of videos and wasted 2 days trying to hack it and then boom i saw your video and followed the steps indicated in this video and then my game launched
One comment I really wanted to make sure is on here, use one of those HDMI converters, it draws significantly more power off of the video out circuit and is notoriously known for killing capacitors substantially faster. If you get one of the adapters with a USB power in, this will save said components. An extra 10 bucks will possibly give you years more of life out of that Wii
Yes. The system will run without and Internet. There are a few areas where Internet helps, e.g. downloading game images, etc. but once it's all set up it's not needed.
I have followed every step exactly, but at 28:39 it says tcp_connect timeout. When I tried again, it just says net_gethostbyname failed: -6. Do you know how to fix this?
Yes. As above you need to download the files outside of the Wii. Try this video that does most of the work on the PC. ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html
Good thing we made that nand backup before installing the base apps, after installing one of them I got a grey background and all the colors were lighter than they were supposed to be. Then I restored it and everything was tight again
Thanks I bought a sd card with loads of games just needed the homebrew installed on the wii but the problem I have is apparently with the remote being wii motion plus not working with the app now I'm back to basics until i can get the correct remote
Thanks so much for this! Just wondering: why do SDXC cards need to be formatted differently? That doesn't seem to be mentioned on the WiiGuide website, and Partition Wizard isn't available on a Mac. I've got everything to run well on a 32gb SDHC, and would like to bump storage size up to 128gb, which would mean an SDXC. Thanks again
SDHC and SDXC both require a licence to make your hardware compatible (I think). Nintendo didn't licence the SDXC code. It can still read them but I guess they need to be in a SDHC compatible format.
@@BytesNBits An update: discovered it's fine to format an SDXC card on a Mac using Disk Utility (format inserted Device, not Volume, to "MS-DOS (FAT)", ensuring that "Scheme" is set to "Master Boot Record"), and then instead of Wii Backup Manager, can use the free app WitGui.
Excellent guide. Will this work on Wii mini exactly the same as the standard wii ? Any updates that i need to be aware of in July 2024? Like the DNS server changing and what not?
It might be the SD card. Make sure its formatted to FAT32 with the sector size in the video - I think it was 16KB. If that doesn't work try another SD card. Hope this helps
Hi, thanks for the video. With the games added through the modification will it be possible to play two people? Will the original games I own still work even after the modification?
Hi. Great job with the video but I have a question if u don’t mind, umm from where did u downloaded wii games? Is there a website or an application? Please help me i can’t find where to download wii games. Will be very thankful to ur response
Having issues at 37:58. When USB loader gx loads up, it says " No WBFS or FAT/NTFS/EXT partition found; You can select or format a partition or use the channel loader mode" There are three options; Select, Format, and Channels. Im using a thumb drive and i do not have priiloader or bootmii installed. Thoughts?
Go to the USBLoader settings and make sure you've selected the right dive. Also make sure you've set the drive up correctly and have plugged it into the correct USB port. I think its the one closest to the edge but please check the video.
Thank you for this fantastic guide. I have a WiiU which also runs Wii programs. Will I be able to use this Homebrew guide to get it up and running emulators?
I think the process is very similar once you've hacked the WiiU but the exploit and some of the downloads are WiiU specific. I would say to have a look through the wii.guide but that seems to be dying as we speak. Try wiiubrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_setup_tutorial. Good Luck!
During initial launch of bootmii i never get the checking naand blocks screen. I can access the bootmii menu and go into the sd card icon and see that the files (usb gx loader, priiloader ect) are on my sd card but each fail to launch/boot even when force commanded? I am not seeing any of the apps in homebrew. When inserting cards a buffer wheel appears for a split second.
I'd probably try re installing the whole thing. Some people say it can be a bit hit and miss at times. Just rerun the hack using a clean SD card. Make sure you format it as FAT32 with 16KB cluster size. I found my SD card didn't work without the right cluster size - which is not the default in Windows.
when i try to connect to wi-fi it gives me an error code of 51330. how do i get over this error? when i go to advanced settings under auto obtain dns it gives me ip address and subnet mask and default router. which do i put the 8888 and 8844 into?
I had the same problem. I ended up using this guy's method ruclips.net/video/ac5ecT7j2Nw/видео.html to get the homebrew installer and then i came back to this video and continued from his steps to add homebrew and bootmii from around 16:00 Edit: the step I used in the other guys video starts at around 3:15. And I’m not sure where you are located but I’m in the USA and when on the letterbomb website I had to make sure to get the 4.3 U version not the 4.3 E version like he uses. Good luck!
Thanks for the help. In case you missed it I did make another video using the ModMii system that sort of does all the work for you, including allowing you to specify different exploits. Have a look at that as well - ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html. It might help out.
27:27 Sup, two questions: I’ve been hearing on Priiloader FAQ that the Region Free EVERYTHING Hack doesn’t work with every game. The question was that why the game still didn’t boot, even with the hack enabled. How likely is this case scenario? And is there any criteria that influences this issue? (I.e PAL Wii booting up Korean ISOs)
I'm really not sure. I guess there will be some games that just don't work for some reason, but I think it's only a few if any. Various combinations of region / etc. may well get in the way.
Scrolled though comments for a while searching for this question. When downloading the IOS38 metadata though d2x custom ios installer i kept getting a repeating message saying *tcp_connect timeout* any idea how to fix this? thanks for the video!
Sounds like your Wii is having problems connecting to the servers. Have a look at this video. It downloads the cIOS files onto the pc before installing them on the Wii. ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html
If I would like to play wii, gc, ps1, snes, nes games what is the recommended hard drive size. Also, does it make a big difference if its an HDD instead of an SSD? Will loading be unbearable while playing with an HDD?
Hard drive size really depends on how many games you're going to download. SNES, NES, Megadrive etc don't take up much space. Allow 20GB or so for these. Wii, GC and PS1 games are all a few GB each so this is where you'll use up your hard drive space. I use a 500GB HDD and that works well for me with tens of games rather than hundreds of games. Speed is fine with either HDD or SSD - you've only got to match a DVD drive. Hope this helps.
@@BytesNBits appreciate the quick and detailed reply. I just bought a 2TB external drive and a 32gb sd card. I forgot to ask one last question. 1) Will a digital copy of zelda four swords adventure work with all the outside components like the four GBAs and four link cables for the GC? 2) Also, will we still need a memory card to save info into or will games automatically save into the hard drive?
Thanks for the detailed instructions. I did have one problem if it helps anyone. Using a 128gb micro SD card somehow getting corrupted. All sorts of strange files on the card afterwards. It may have been that because it was already fat32 i didnt format it fresh with the correct cluster size etc. I couldnt rescue the Nand Backup, copy files off on there so if it bricks in the future I have another couple of wiis. The fault would be when you launced GX loader and you would get a dump load error screen after pressing ok to load find drive with games on. Reformated the card added the apps back on and working so far. Thanks
The Wii does seem a bit touchy about the card formatting. Apparently the SDXC format wasn't licenced for use on the Wii so we're trying to fool it into using that format by formatting in a certain way. Good to hear you got it working.
I have everything installed properly but every time I try to boot a game in USB Loader GX it just returns to the Homebrew Channel instead of loading the game. Has anyone else had this issue?
Make sure the drive where the games are stored is formatted as an FAT32 drive with the correct cluster size. Check you've got all the cIOS mods installed. Hope you get it going.
I went through this guide but after going into USB Loader GX after it was installed (no games on usb drive yet) I can not get out of it. From USB Loader GX I try to go to the Wii System menu but all I get is a black screen and I have power down the console using the power button to do anything else. Has anyone else run into this issue before?
That seems strange. Can you get back to the Homebrew screen rather than the Wii Menu? I'd probably try adding a game to see if that helps. If still no joy try deleting it all off your sd card and reinstalling. But just guessing here!
First, I ended up testing with a game and that didn't help the issue and I also couldn't get to the homebrew menu either. I accidentally figured out the issue though! I had the USB drive I wanted to use to test games with plugged in and it had an empty wbfs folder. I happened to unplug it one of the times I rebooted and no issues accessing the Wii menu. Kept it unplugged and put a game on the SD card. No issues, game worked! Switched the USB external hard drive I planned on using after my tests and no issues either! Not sure why it didn't like the USB drive (with and without games on it) but all is working now!! Thanks for the great video! @@BytesNBits
When using the "power button" to scroll through the menu options, how do you actually select your choice? Do you press and hold the power button or something else?
Was it all working before the swap? Make sure you copy everything from the old drive. If it all checks out you might need to go through the cIOS and USBLoader installation process again to make sure everything is in place.
@@BytesNBits same problem here. how would i go on about installing everything again? can i just delete the files from the sd card? or do i need to dump the nand backup? i'm afraid of breaking even more stuff lol
Does it usually take a long time to load the drives? Im using games in both the SD card and usb drive in the back of the system. And it's been showing the loading games messages for close to an hour now. Im afraid to turn the system off. Could it have froze trying to load the games?
Loading should be a couple of seconds. Something isn't working. The USBLoader should only be looking at one drive at a time. you need to go into settings to switch to the other drive. Try taking one drive out and seeing if it works. You'll probably need to reset the system.
Hello, Thanks for this great tutorial. Do you know how I can format a 128gb SD card on a mac? Whenever I do it with utility I can only choose ExFAT and MS-DOS (FAT). Also, do you know if the game files can be in the original SD card - or do they have to be loaded in via HDD? I was planning on using just that one 128gb SD card for everything.
I don't know about the Mac formatting issue. I guess there will be some application that will do it for you. Yes you can run everything from the SD card. Just save the wbfs folder there and USBLoader should pick it up. If not go into the UsbLoader settings and tell it which drive to use.
the “rainbow donkey” is rainbow dash from my little pony friendship is magic btw 😭 it was quite a popular show with nerds and gamer dudes for a long time so im guessing the person who made the hack was a fan 😭
Hey we are still doing this in 2024. I followed the guide to the letter but when i get back into the homebrew after downloading the priiloader and so on the apps dont appear and again i followed the steps in this guide exactly as shown
First time i ran through the DNS part i forgot to insert my SD card. Running it back now it stays stuck on the testing connection screen even after system format. Any thoughts?
Did it manage to connect to the DNS server the first time? If yes it might be the server is down at the moment, or sometimes the IP address changes - have a look at the Wii guide site to check. If it didn't connect you might be better off trying a different hack. Have a a look at ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html. It uses the Letterbomb hack that doesn't need to fake the WiFi server.
I dont know if you still respond to comments but i had some trouble trying to find the right usb drive and the sd card. Can gou recommend one with a lot of storage and provide links? Also will i be able to downloaded mods like the mod to add more mario kart wii tracks? Thank you for the video
tcp_read sort of suggests some some of Internet issue. Have a look at this video - ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html. It uses the PC to do the downloading.
@@BytesNBits thank. I noticed when I went back to check the DNS it went to 008.008.008.008 for some reason after initially switching the 18. Etc etc you mentioned in the video.
Ok I got a few weird questions if you don’t mind me asking my og Wii the disc drive just doesn’t work will this hinder the ability to use homebrew apps? Also where I would get my roms typically from my friend vimm but recently all the good games have been shut down. And I can’t seem to find any roms that won’t give me ad pop ups and viruses do you have any safe websites for roms? Also says everything does work and I’m play a “story game” like Zelda or Mario can I save my spot in it?
Hi. You don't need the disk drive for homebrew. Everything works off usb or SD card. Vimms lair and a few others got hit in the latest round. Archive.Org still had a good library. Yes the save game function all works for Wii and GameCube games. Have fun!
Hello! I know this is quite a while after the video was posted but everytime i try to install d2x Custom IOS Installers i get an error saying tcp_connect timeout and it doesnt install. I don't know why.
Sometimes the Wii has difficulty downloading the files. Try this video - ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html. It does all the downloading on the Pc and then you just install the files from SD card.
Hi. I hacked my Wii many years ago. We've recently started using it again. I notice though that it's got some old apps. What is the safest way to update Preloader (yes it's an old version before it was renamed to Priiloader). Can I just install the latest Priiloader and will this update for me. Also, my system menu is 4.1 - is there a way to update to 4.3 without losing the hacks I've already applied? I also notice that mine is running IOS61 - can I just install IOS58 as in your video?
38:28 I followed all steps up to this point and my screen has no list after selecting yes to default settings. In the hard drive settings it says “no installation” instead of fat32. My sd card is formatted to fat32 so I am unsure of how to continue.
I found my hard drive doesn't always get recognised after a power on reset. If I leave the power on and so a normal reset it then seems to kick into action. I'm not sure but it almost seemed like the hard drive took too long to initialise so the Wii through there was nothing attached. This might be what you're seeing.
If you're having problems with the exploit DNS server you can try a dirrerent hack. Have a look at ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html. It uses the Letterbomb hack which doesn't involve a separate DNS server.
Im having issues right at 28:34. Everytime i go to select a slot, i get a “net_init failed” message. Not sure if and where I messed in the process. Help?? 😢
Hard to say what's happened. I'd advise following my ModMii video. That will help you overwrite anything you've already done and get you to a working state - ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html.
Hey man ! Just started this process today. Been going between 3 different videos because the starting video i watched wasn't too helpful. At 28:38 my tmd. File wont download. Any reason?
Make sure you've got all the files in the correct folders inside the apps folder. If this doesn't work try using a different SD card to make sure it's not that.
When i try connecting to wii connect it makes me read terms and conditions, saying "if ur over 18 press allow, if ur under 18 press dont allow" n im 20 so i pressrd allow but it jus sends me back to the home screen :/ it also wont let me enter the 18.188 code. It gives me error 52132
OK I get to the screen at 38:57, just nothing is being shown. It shows how many GB of total is free (about 10GB is taken by 2 games), but game count is 0. Did the reset and the correct disk is shown in settings, just doesn't want to show games here. Tweaking the settings it will show the default Wii channels, so something is working, but the important bit isn't. Somehow...
Check that the Wii games are checked in the what to display menu - one of the middleish buttons in the top menu in USBLoader. If that's turned on make sure the games are in the correct folder - did you use Wii Backup Manager to copy over the files?
Yeah, that is the settiing where you can show the NAND channels as well. Wii shopping and all that. They do show when ticked. Unticked them quickly though -) And we did use that manager. Must say other than that it went impeccably. We must have done something wrong. We leave it for tomorrow. Thank you
@@BytesNBits Got it working. What I found, is that either one of the following is true: WiiBackupManager is playing tricks OR it is the folder name. Possibly the latter. Googleing around we found a suggestion as to the wbfs file names and I read the post as suggesting that the wbfs files are not in subfolders. WiiBakcupManger stores "this is my game 12345" into WBFS folder by first creating a subfolder called 'this is my game [12345]' then stores 12345.wbfs (and possibly 12345.wbf1 if split) into it. I decided to take the wbfs files out of their folders. So a whole bunch of wbfs and wbf1 files rather unsorted in the WBFS folder. That didn't work. Then I changed the name of the folder from WBFS to wbfs without recreating the subfolders. That did work!!! I will have to see if recreating the subfolders at some stage matters. It would provide some structure. But at this point that is not possible as my 21 year old son is travelling back in time on his Wii right now ;-D
I have an issue with cios installer. It doesn’t let me do any of that part. It sits for 15 mins & say something like “tcp_timedout” (or something like that) and then stops working & says “failed” on whatever block I’m on….248, 249, 250 etc I have no idea what to do
@@BytesNBits Thank you! This seems to have worked even though I had no clue on what I was doing. Actual error was: Getting tmd.5662 file... tcp_connect timeout A clearer understanding of what cIOS is and why it was needed the USB Loader work would have been helpful.
I set everything up today with the SD card just as you suggested. It works well with the Homebrew Channel, and the apps are showing up. However, when I connect a 160GB HDD (formatted to FAT32) to the back USB port (the one you recommended, though I tried both), the apps disappear from the Homebrew Channel. I can put the games onto the SD card, and it works that way, but it's too small to hold everything going forward. Any idea why all the apps vanish from the Homebrew Channel when I add the HDD? Any help is graciously received
A couple of thongs to try. Copy the apps folder from the SD card to the HDD to see if the Wii is trying to find them there (it shouldn't be but worth a try). If that fails check your HDD is formatted as an MBR drive and not a GPT. The Wii won't be able to read a GPT drive. have a look at this if you're stuck - ruclips.net/video/sRa7cEF8EqA/видео.html
@@BytesNBits Thank you for your reply, It is a MBR so 👍👍👌👌 - Thank you for letting me know how to check. I put the apps onto the HDD and it worked :) I have now also put the games on the HDD which has now given me much more space. We can now put all of our discs onto the HDD which will make it easier for my little boy. I appreciate your channel and also they way you respond to comments including negative ones.
does this work with the Wii home edition? I think that's what it's called, it's the Wii that was made to be placed horizontally and doesn't have GameCube controller ports
Hey im confused about usbloader. In hard drive settings it says "game/install partition not initialized" (im using a usb stick) and i tried putting my games on the sd card but that also didnt work. i tried redoing the d2x installer stuff but nothting seems to work and was wondering if u had any suggestions on what to do.
Make sure that you've got the games saved in the correct format and in the correct wbfs folder. The Wii backup manager will do this for you. Also make sure you plug the usb drive into the correct slot (see video). You can also try this video - ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html. It will install a more comprehensive set of cISO files that may help.
Hi! I`m very thanksful for that guide, it really helped me. but could you also tell me, where can I find games in wbfs format? thanks. Also, my games crash as I click start button. And then it returns to homebrew channel.
You'll need to look around for games. Usually the Internet Archive is a good place to start but that's just been hacked so might be a while before it's fully back up and running. Games crashing usually means the cIOS files haven't been installed. Check you've got all of those or have a look at this video - ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html. It installs a better set of cIOS files.
I'm not sure why you're not getting the same options. Did you download all the mods as in the video? The other option is to use this video - ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html. It downloads the cIOS files on your PC.
@@BytesNBits it was actually the NusDownloader step that I was missing. I don’t recall seeing it in your tutorial but I could have just missed it. 🤷♂️
Make sure you've got all the files and folders correctly named. Check everything is installed OK and that the ROM file works - try it in the Dolphin emulator. If all that checks out you might need to re install.
Hi i have done everything but i realised the d2x cios is wrong. Saying timeout. Because i did everything in this video. Do i have to format my whole sd card and ssd and follow the other video that you shared to others? I would appreciate a reply pls
When I try to install bootmii and I have the sd card in the slot it gives me an error: FAILED (-1) How can this be fixed? I can't move onto the next steps at all
hi, ive tried this and it works up until the part on the "if you paid for this software" screen and the press one to continue prompt never comes up ive waited as long as 10-15 minutes and tried multiple times
Some hacks don't seem to work on some Wiis. Have a look at this video which uses a different method - ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html. It may work better for you. Good Luck
I have all the wii and gamecube games i want loaded on. The gamecube games work but the Wii games just loads me back to the wii menu. What am i doing wrong
Make sure you've used the backup manager to copy the games to your usb drive. If that's ok have a look at the troubleshooting section in the hack guide.
my wii cannot load game when I click into games on usb loader, even though all game is already on usb loader and I have play all this game before, I don't know why? can you give me some recommendation for this? thanks bro....^^
I'm going to leave this comment for anyone else who experiences the same thing, but I solved the issue 😅 my SD Card was not inserted lol trying again rn
Does your SD card slot work? BootMii isn't absolutely necessary. It's more of a backup if you do something really bad to brick your Wii. You could also try my other mod video - ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html - to see if that works any better.
Try this video. ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html. It lets you download everything on your PC so you transfer all the files to the Wii and then install them.
On the initial setup you won't have any menu appear. BootMii is run through different means. You'll need to install Priiloader which will then run BootMii for you.
Wheb i get to the screen to click up to highlight install home brew channel it does not move curser, its just stuck on exit, any help would be much appreciated, i bpight this wii for my 6 year old daughter, really want to get it up and loaded with games for her.
Make sure your WiiMote is still connected (there should be a light on it). Are you using an original controller. Some of the third party ones don't work as well with the homebrew.
@@BytesNBits I got one game on usbloader but when staring goes back to homebrew .... For sure I miss loads 😀 I bought this Wii already with homebrew in it but not the apps, it's version 4.3E don't know if I should update and start over. Great video sorry to bother you.
Great guide, thanks. What's the recommended size for an SD card for the homebrew and apps? I have an old 4TB portable drive I plan to use for games, will that work OK? I just format to FAT32 and 16KB cluster size? I thought I read that over a certain size should use 32KB cluster. Thanks for the help, I'm looking forward to working through your other guides. I have a 14" PVM CRT and will be using this for a cute little retro gaming setup
I think the Wii can only cope with up to 2TB but please do check online. Yes, 64GB and over should be 32KB cluster size. Sounds like a great setup you're putting together.
Followed all rhe steps successfully until i added priloader etc to the sd card apps folder fhen put sd card back in wii but they are not coming up on the wii. Any ideas?
I'd first check that the files have all copied to the right locations and have extracted from the archive files correctly. Did the SD card setup go OK in the Wii for BootMii etc. If not it might be an issue with the card format or hardware.
hello i wonder if you might know how to make a wiiware game return to usb loader gx when running in sneek? as it always goes to the homebrew launcher after that
This has got to be the most in depth, comprehensive guide to softmodding the Wii that I've ever seen.
Great to hear you're enjoying your Wii again. Have fun!
Couldnt agree more!
Amen!

@@BytesNBits Hi, i need to revamp my wii too. Does all this apply to ubuntu/linux 21.2 ?
I love homebrewing consoles, it unlocks their true potential.
Yes. The consoles make great retro gaming systems.
More specifically it’s called soft modding or hard modding. Homebrew is a byproduct of those mods.
@@MisfitModswho cares. Same thing
@@darkx6869 because you can’t homebrew something without modding it first. Homebrew comes after. Similar but not the same.
The person going through the process cares. @darkx6869
Glad it helped! Have fun!
That's a great find.
I like how you question the £50 price point like everybody is going to find a fabricated “dumped” console outside their local Tender Centre. Thanks for the chuckle, chum.
Good for you because when it launched it was worth almost 250$/£/€
100 percent perfect guide, had plenty of problems but all user error, thank you for your time and hard work!
You're welcome! Have fun!
Just got a hold of a full wii setup for £30 and instantly found you! 👏🏻 thank you
Glad I could help! Hope you got the hack working.
Yes. Make sure you use the right USB port. The other one doesn't work as your storage.
For some reason my pendrive was formatted as MBR and it was causing reading problems on my Wii. If anyone is having the same trouble as me just change to GPT and it'll work fine. Thanks for guide !
Thanks for the info
@@hberrysc3517 did you fix this
I had to do the opposite. Mine wasn’t working as GPT and even got a 2nd Wii thinking the reader wasn’t working but then the other wasn’t neither. Soon as i switched from GPT to MBR the message popped up.
This was awesome.I look forward to more Wii content.
More on the way!
Was able to get everything up and running! Thanks for the guide, it really helped a lot, I'm super stoked to play all the wii games I missed out on :)

Thanks. Glad it was useful. PS I think I deserve a million subscribers too :)
@@BytesNBits on my cios i receive a message says tcp_connect timeout

One comment I really wanted to make sure is on here, use one of those HDMI converters, it draws significantly more power off of the video out circuit and is notoriously known for killing capacitors substantially faster. If you get one of the adapters with a USB power in, this will save said components. An extra 10 bucks will possibly give you years more of life out of that Wii
Thanks for the tip. I hadn't come across those adapters. I'll have a look.
I have an old wii that the disk drive failed on. This will make it usable again. Thanks
Glad I could help
Took some time and user error but this worked very well. Great video!!

Brilliant video👍. One question though can we remove the Wi-Fi connection? Once setup is done? 14:04
Yes. The system will run without and Internet. There are a few areas where Internet helps, e.g. downloading game images, etc. but once it's all set up it's not needed.
@@BytesNBits thank you for the reply.
amazing video but, where can I find those videogames tho? Where I find the link to download them on the pc so I can transfer them on the usb/driver?
They are getting a bit harder to find these days as Nintendo have recently been closing down rom sites. Have a look around in Archive.org.
I have followed every step exactly, but at 28:39 it says tcp_connect timeout. When I tried again, it just says net_gethostbyname failed: -6. Do you know how to fix this?
Yo same, idk what to do
Lookup the tutorial from @funkyscott47 about how to install without internet
Yes. As above you need to download the files outside of the Wii. Try this video that does most of the work on the PC. ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html

Wow thanks it blows my mind but makes sense something to work at

Excellent guide. Will this work on Wii mini exactly the same as the standard wii ? Any updates that i need to be aware of in July 2024? Like the DNS server changing and what not?

Best guide ive found!
Glad it helped!

What is the safest way to update Preloader (yes it's an old version before it was renamed to Priiloader). Can I just install the latest Priiloader and will this update for me. Also, my system menu is 4.1 - is there a way to update to 4.3 without losing the hacks I've already applied? I also notice that mine is running IOS61 - can I just install IOS58 as in your video?
modmii.github.io/ may be what you need. Please read through the documentation to make sure it's going to do what you want. Good luck!
@@BytesNBits thank you for the reply! I tried leaving the console on and doing a soft rest but this didn’t do anything.

What does it mean if the base 57 slot 250 say "net_gethostbyname failed: -6"???
It sounds like it tried to download the code but failed. Try again after a short while to see if the server had an issue.
Ever get it figured out?
Hey man ! Just started this process today. Been going between 3 different videos because the starting video i watched wasn't too helpful. At 28:38 my tmd. File wont download. Any reason?
NVM I read some of the other comments 😅
What did you end up doing to fix it?
How do you bring up that menu in homebrew channel? The only option i have is when i press 1 says options device and sort. I cant get to bootmii
Have a look at wii.hacks.guide/bootmii.html
My console doesn’t show the apps on homebrew
Make sure you've got all the files in the correct folders inside the apps folder. If this doesn't work try using a different SD card to make sure it's not that.
When i try connecting to wii connect it makes me read terms and conditions, saying "if ur over 18 press allow, if ur under 18 press dont allow" n im 20 so i pressrd allow but it jus sends me back to the home screen :/ it also wont let me enter the 18.188 code. It gives me error 52132
I think Wii Connect has been shut down.
Unticked them quickly though -)
And we did use that manager.
It sits for 15 mins & say something like “tcp_timedout” (or something like that) and then stops working & says “failed” on whatever block I’m on….248, 249, 250 etc
I have no idea what to do
Have a look at my ModMii video - ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html. This uses a different technique to get the files you need.
@@BytesNBits Thank you! This seems to have worked even though I had no clue on what I was doing. Actual error was:
Getting tmd.5662 file...
tcp_connect timeout
A clearer understanding of what cIOS is and why it was needed the USB Loader work would have been helpful.
I think this works for all Wii models, or at least there will be a variation of the hack that does.
I have a problem at minute 28:17 cause my cIOS goes up to d2x v6 and there is no other, I don't have d2x-v11-beta1. What can i do?
I'm not sure why you're not getting the same options. Did you download all the mods as in the video? The other option is to use this video - ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html. It downloads the cIOS files on your PC.
@@BytesNBits idk what happen, but im going to test it
when installing cios I get failed messages each time. Is it possible this was already done by previous console owner? is there a way to find out?
You should be able to overwrite the old cIOS if it's there. Is your Internet connection working OK?
@@BytesNBits it was actually the NusDownloader step that I was missing. I don’t recall seeing it in your tutorial but I could have just missed it. 🤷♂️
Thanks for this tutorial. However when i tried to load my game, it went blank and back to homebrew page. Help!
Your ssd will be fine but I'd rebuild the sd card and then follow the ModMii instructions.
When I try to install bootmii and I have the sd card in the slot it gives me an error: FAILED (-1)
How can this be fixed? I can't move onto the next steps at all
Make sure you run the prepare sd card option first. If that doesn't work try a different SD card.
hi, ive tried this and it works up until the part on the "if you paid for this software" screen and the press one to continue prompt never comes up ive waited as long as 10-15 minutes and tried multiple times
Is it just the one game or are all games not working? Try reloading the game from the iso file again.
@@BytesNBits all game not working bro...^^, are we need reinstall homebrew?
My NUS downloader kept saying download failed when I typed in the iOS and the v thing, I made sure to check WAD but it still doesn’t work
Try this version of the hack - ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html. It gets everything ready on the PC first.
What do I do if the SD Card fails to mount when you "prepare the SD card" in the HackMii Installer?
I'm going to leave this comment for anyone else who experiences the same thing, but I solved the issue 😅 my SD Card was not inserted lol trying again rn
We all make simple mistakes. Hope you got it working.
Hey no matter what i try 16:17 every step for the bootmii setup fails. I tried different sd cards but still keeps on failing.
Does your SD card slot work? BootMii isn't absolutely necessary. It's more of a backup if you do something really bad to brick your Wii. You could also try my other mod video - ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html - to see if that works any better.
@@BytesNBits yes i’ve also tried different sd card slots. I’ll try the tutorial when i get back home
28:11 i can't find cIOS d2x-v11-beta1. I only can see d2x-v4,v5,v6
Try this video. ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html. It lets you download everything on your PC so you transfer all the files to the Wii and then install them.
does old game progress stay on the wii? i'd like to play my games where i left off after i do this.
I think so but I'm not sure. My Wii Fit info was saved but I didn't check any other game data.
Thanks for replying while the video has been up for 3 months. Goated
Hey how long does the home brew channel bubble screen stay on for before the menu so I can use bootmii 😅
On the initial setup you won't have any menu appear. BootMii is run through different means. You'll need to install Priiloader which will then run BootMii for you.
On the Bubble Screen press the home Button.
@@Janimoothank you it helped me
Wheb i get to the screen to click up to highlight install home brew channel it does not move curser, its just stuck on exit, any help would be much appreciated, i bpight this wii for my 6 year old daughter, really want to get it up and loaded with games for her.
Make sure your WiiMote is still connected (there should be a light on it). Are you using an original controller. Some of the third party ones don't work as well with the homebrew.
Got it, I used another wiimote, same model number but one worked, one didn't.
Hi, just a quick question, when you going through the d2x custom iOS installer, do you need internet connection I don't think it worked for me
Yes. This hack relies on an Internet connection. If you're having issues try this alternative - ruclips.net/video/8RdwHT3C16E/видео.html
@@BytesNBits I got one game on usbloader but when staring goes back to homebrew .... For sure I miss loads 😀
I bought this Wii already with homebrew in it but not the apps, it's version 4.3E don't know if I should update and start over.
If not it might be an issue with the card format or hardware.
hello i wonder if you might know how to make a wiiware game return to usb loader gx when running in sneek? as it always goes to the homebrew launcher after that
I think there are some settings in USB Loader to tell it what to do when a game exits. Though it might depend on how that particular game finishes.
@@BytesNBits yeah it works for everything except for sneek / neek as that has to do a full console reboot when it exits neek
