Sniper Shoots Bank Robber Holding Hostages Through A Computer Screen

  • Florida police do not play when it comes to criminals. If you want to be a criminal in Florida, Florida police are going to treat you like the criminal you are.
Florida sheriff's office released the video of the armed bank robber being shot as he was holding hostages.
The Florida sniper shot through an actual computer monitor. The monitor could be seen with a big hole in it (while still functioning!)
The bank robber making demands had a knife and claimed he had a bomb while detaining a man and a woman.
Police said they tried to negotiate with him and after the suspect "presented deadly force" an LCSO Special Operations Unit sniper fired a "planned and deliberate shot through a computer monitor," striking the suspect in the center of the forehead and killing him instantly.
Oh, boy, that was a ballsy shot! A 30-40 yard shot from a supported position with what looked like a bolt-action rifle chambered in .308 is difficult, especially in a hostage situation with cameras around.
You only had a target window the size of a forehead, and your supported position was the shoulder of the guy in front of you. Shooting through a computer on top of that is crazy

It's possible that the negotiator or the person in charge of the operation discussed what the phrase would be should the suspect refuse to cooperate! Or maybe this had been going on for so long the negotiator was just buying time, and that was just a coincidence! Don't know without knowing the full details of this case!

just because you haven't been arrested that doesn't mean Florida police are perfect. The American judicial system is really intense. The USA imprisons more of its population than any country, per capita, by far. I think El Salvador is second. Anyway I'm getting off track, any police force in any state or any country makes wrongful arrest all the time. Did you know that judges disagree with each other about 30% of the time? A jury is slightly higher one or two percent I think. So you could reason that roughly that amount of guilty verdicts are incorrect. There's tons of innocent people in American prison

Bolt action can't do a quick follow-up shot easily. Aimed shots on a scoped bolt action are like 1.5-2s (when shooting like normal), and a big part of that time is lifting the face, running the bolt, and getting behind the scope again.
Sure, if your bolt action is smooth and safe to cycle the bolt without breaking cheek wield, then you can possibly lose nearly half of that time. Still, 0.75-1s with a whole lot of sight disruption, assuming you didn't waste any time and didn't short-chuck it or get hung up.
Gas-operated rifles like a SCAR cycle in 0.1s, you can shoot as fast as you can control the recoil.

You said that you had all these questions. I can see that for sure. Myself, I took what I learned in sniper school. Mind you, the one I went to was not a full sniper school. I am former SOG Army Europe. 86-89. With that I already knew long range shooting to a point. Not like I was taught. But, switched it up and added that skill and knowledge to my varmint hunting. I use anywhere from a 22-250, 223, 243 and 308. I zero everything dead on at 200 yards. Here's where it gets fun. I use calibrated targets for each of my firearms. Meaning I reload and know what each one is running. Say my 22-250. Bullseye at 200 makes it 1.8 inches high at a 100 yrds. Since the bullet is from the muzzle to a 100 it is raising 1.8 inches. Kentucky windage my Dad called it. At 30 yrds it would be maybe 3/4 high of the crosshairs. So, aim 3/4 in low. It is a guessing game without exact distance and a graph to look at. Sometime dumb luck over skill works too.

    • @fleatactical7390
      @fleatactical7390 2 месяца назад +4

Not sure. Depends on how he had the scope zeroed. At this close of a range, mechanical offset is very much a thing. I find it hard to believe he would have taken that shot with no way to judge offset. He would have had to have been aiming at the top of the guy's head. Maybe he misjudged the offset and like you say, didn't realize it was going to go through the screen first.
As for a deflection, that also depends on how close the guy was to the monitor. If he was directly behind it, very low risk. More than 10 feet though, risky. I dunno, maybe more like over 20 feet. But I'm sure they practice shooting through barriers to get a better feel for how much they can pull off.
We often forget there is very little around us that can over true cover. Most of it turns into merely concealment when anything over a .22 LR is used.

Modern flat-panel monitors have almost no effect when you're dealing with that sort of distance and the velocity of the projectile in this case.
You're dealing with a lot of soft plastic, basically - computer monitors aren't designed to be structurally sound beyond supporting their own weight, which is generally less than five pounds. If anything, the only thing that could possibly modify the trajectory when taking this shot is if the monitor was attached to some sort of desk or wall mount, which would be made of steel and thus be able to affect the trajectory of the projectile; even cheap, low-grade steel is absolutely sturdy enough to do that.
At a farther distance, it could be an issue due to velocity degradation, possible tumbling of the bullet itself, and atmospheric/weather effects at, say, 100+ yards in an outdoor environment, but in that situation the sniper would presumably be in an elevated position so as to put the reticle directly on the target anyway and thus compensate for all of those factors.

    • @BIGMoodNY

They chose a round designed to shoot through intermediate clutter without deflecting. You must remember swat anticipates these exact scenarios. Clearly they don’t say: “Well I can’t get a shot cause (glass, door, monitor) is blocking. They choose the round accordingly. Historical precedent: 357 mag specifically designed in 1935 to penetrate car doors and remain effective.
