  • Probably my favourite chamber work by Charles-Valentin Alkan, his Grand Duo Concertante for violin and piano. Performed by Dong-Suk Kang (violin) and Olivier Gardon (piano).

Great recording! The slow movement and the finale were particularly successful. It's a mystery that not more performers play Alkan's chamber music. They are full of ingenuity, wit, melodic and rhythmic invention and some glorious soaring melodies. Thanks for posting this!

@4candles You're very welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it! My favourite from this interpretation is definitely the finale, which is, at parts, even more rapturous than Ronald Smith's landmark recording of this one. I think it's only a question of time for more famous musicians to take up these works; hopefully Perlman, Barenboim or Argerich will bump into one of the numerous uploads of Alkan's chamber music here on RUclips and exclaim "man, that's something what should be played at Carnegie Hall!".

A brilliant piece! I think it's a pity that Alkan only composed three works for chamber music. Is it because all three of them are too "technical" to play?

I think he was just firmly focused on the piano, like Chopin was, who also has very few compositions that aren't piano solo. For chamber music, Chopin has one piece for flute and piano, a piano trio, and 3 pieces for cello and piano.
Alkan did write some string sextets and a full-scale orchestral symphony in B minor, which are lost. And who knows, maybe he wrote more chamber works that are now lost. He was virtually unknown for centuries.

But yes, definitely a pity! This is a fantastic work, same as the sonata for cello and piano.
(I actually prefer this violin piano duo)
