im a bourbon head and, while this is aged in bourbon barrels, it is NOT bourbon, just corn whiskey. But it's really close to bourbon and it is some fantastic stuff
Bourbon is aged in new barrels. Mellow corn being aged in used barrels makes it very much not bourbon
@@honkytonkinson9787You're right, but for most people it would be considered "very close to bourbon", especially when comparing to other spirits.
@@jerensteffen "bourbon adjacent" 😆
Come on guys. I wanted to sound all smart in the comments but you beat me to it 😅
Cheers 🥃
This assessment is 100% correct!
Mellow corn is Heaven Hill 7 year BIB mash bill - Its 78, 12, 10
78% corn, 12% malted barley 10% rye
This whiskey is aged in used HHBiB and Evan Williams barrels and adheres to the US BiB standard.
Overall thus is a VERY corn forward whiskey that should NOT be overlooked!
To me it tastes like I added white lightning to Frosted Flakes and called it "the freakin' breakfast of champions!"
mellow corn is shockingly good
I'm mad the hipsters and college kids discovered it and it's gone from $14/l to $25/l at the local liquor store.
🤫
Nice seeing you not torture yourself with a Malort mixer. You’re looking much better. I was really getting worried about your sanity. 😂😂
Have a wonderful weekend PV3.
Always enjoyed it. 3-4 years ago I could get it for $13. The corn mash is so high it gives a bit of a candy corn finish. Love it
I am reasonably sure that Bottled in Bond is tied directly to the 100 proof - in order to be labeled as such, it will always be 100 proof.
No
Yup, correct
@@michaelb1761 yes. Bottle in Bond requires 100 proof, aged at least four years in a bonded warehouse. You can literally check this on wikipedia.
Can confirm the words of @@baloonman5
Must be at least 100 proof. Over that is just fine
It'd be awesome if you did a guest spot on The Whiskey Tribe channel. That'd be some comedy gold.
last i bought it,it was $13L.
it makes a beautiful and affordable old fashioned at 2oz mellow corn 3 dashes ango 2 dashes orange bitters .25oz 2:1 turbo or demerara
The Mello-Yello comment got me.😆
Might have to check this one out.
Look at it this way, PV3, you might have had a terrible time at the Derby, but you came out a winner with Corn Whiskey!
Commenting to boost pv3 algorithm
I don't how how he doesn't get more views. I think this stuff is awesome. :( We need to share it more!
"That was worth another Bing search though"
Not gonna lie, that line got me. Sounds like a good whiskey for the price point.
This flew under a lot of radars. Gold!
Yep gotta love the commitment to the PV3 lore!
I love the tacky label ..and it's actually good and it's better than a lot of other "fancy whiskey"
Honestly it's not even tacky anymore, just rad
# "the tacky label"
It is *vintage*, 1945
lil Prescat cameo at the end :)
Tasting this is like eating a bowl of warm, buttered popcorn while someone dumps a bucket of Popov vodka over your head.
I haven't watched your stuff in a while and I have to say, you look really good with the beard!
I have that exact sweater, and I look like a sweaty walrus in it
I heard the “sweaty walrus bod” is in these days. Good on you for keeping up with the trends! 😂😂
@@emmyali920 tell that to all of Hinge lol
I looooove that one. Any bottle that looks exactly the same as it did in the 40s HAS to be good.
Gotta love anything that could have been downed in some dive bar with flickering neon, while musing over booze, broads, and bum raps. Probably got a fedora and a .45 in a shoulder holster somewhere in there, too.
As a whiskey head, the only thing I’m judging is that you’re not using a glen cairn. I’m kidding, great video. So many great whiskeys out there that don’t break the bank.
A local bar carries this and I've probably drank a bottle or two of it. I have indeed been a bluegrass musician at times.
God, I have fond memories of Mellow Corn... I'm not crazy about the taste (though I don't dislike it) but back when I worked in F&B, the local industry dive stocked Mellow Corn and it was my late night pic when I was already several rounds deep but didn't have work the next day and felt like throwing caution to the wind. Can't say the same for some other people I drank it with but I never had a bad night drinking Mellow Corn
Pure corn whiskey will always be one of my favourite types of whiskey. It's rarely the most complex flavour wise, but its simple, sweet and delicious. Very hard to get Mellow Corn in Australia where I'm out, so I tend to go for Balcones Baby Blue; young, brash, sweet and more expensive than it probably should be, like the women you meet at nerd-themed club nights.
What about Bundy and bogans? 😉
Before it got really popular, you could find Mellow Corn for about 8$ a bottle! Amazing at that price.
@0:56 "This came in at $19.99"
I saw it tonight on the bottom shelf at Lee's Discount Liquor (Las Vegas) for $18.99, now sipping it neat from a chilled stone guinomi (Japanese saké cup) after dinner.
Mellow corn is a key ingredient to certain whiskey cocktails. It has a pure corn whiskey note. Some say candy corn to a grassy barn note. Great for a horatio cornblower martini
That Beck mention got an instant subscribe from me!
Literally my favorite whiskey.
I've been waiting for this video for like 5 years
Mellow corn is EXTREMELY underrated! Anyone hating on "The Corn" just has a large pretention stick up their A$$.
Likely the same people who think Macallan is actually good.
crazy how fast it's gone up, used to be sitting comfortable in the mid teens price wise.
Such great stuff! Not technically bourbon, but who cares. It’s a big tent in bourbon world and Mellow Corn has an esteemed place there.
Great, now I want to go find this stuff.
How can you not love a liquor whose label suggests that its primary use is thinning paint? Keeps the poseurs at bay.
Love mellow corn! It's a bottle you have to hunt for in my area, almost like it was allocated.
It is very very good, an excellent value and I love the colorful label.
Another chapter to put in the book of Abby lore!
Might I recommend Tin Cup? Affordable, excellent, and it comes with its own cup! That's value, baby!
I love Heaven Hill and Mellow corn, but it’s not a bourbon. Just a heads up, it’s 100% corn in used barrels. Not Bourbon
If we're in "well, actually" mode, Mellow Corn is not 100% corn.
@@DouglasRosser so are you counting enzymes?
@@That_dude_who_knows_some_stuff Just google "mellow corn mashbill" and click on the first link (from Heaven Hill Distillery, no less) it says "At least 80 percent corn".
@@That_dude_who_knows_some_stuff No, just going by what Heaven Hill says on their own website.
I just did a whiskey Tasting today, all pricy stuff. It would be cool however to see PV3 do a budget showdown. Early Times BnB, Evan Williams BnB, Wild Turkey 101, and Woodford Reserve.
Never tried corn whiskey but love rye whiskey. 🇨🇦 so maybe that’s why
Let's go Spittoon! Mellow Corn is pretty good too.
I don't HATE Mellow Corn, I think the value for the bottle is pretty high. Makes a reasonable cocktail for sure. I genuinely don't recommend drinking it neat though, total rotgut the moment it hits your stomach imo.
Dude, i drank a bottle of Rebel Rye 100 last night . Somehow i woke up with Abby next to me!! Boy was my wife pissed!!!!! House still smells like low tide...
Edit: Speaking about feeling in your mouth .Abby told me a story about you and a Sea Cucumber...
What’s Abby?
@@MyBoomStick1 His whore ex. Kinda a running joke
@@MyBoomStick1 2:00
70% and above needs water adding it to below is just lowering your difficulty slider.
Maybe make a sour o add bitters to it and tell us how it goes for cocktails!
Makes an excellent whiskey sour as well
PV3's dad was right He really does have little rat fingers.
You can call him PV2
Another really good , cheap, underrated bourbon is Evan Williams. You have to get the bottle in bond though. Otherwise it's just cheap rotgut.
Bible quote! HA. And CAREamel! . Now I want to go to Bevmo and look for Mellow Corn. Thank you PV3.
You should reach out to Whiskey Tribe since you are both TX based (I believe) and colab on a video. They got all the good stuff you could want and no spittoon needed.
Two more good cheap bourbons are JTS Brown and Ancient Ancient Age 10 Star.
MELLOW FUCKING CORNNNNNNNN
Excellent whiskey.
The lowest quality thing about Mellow Corn is the screw cap on the bottle. Amazing whisky for the price and I actually think it belongs in any American whisky collection
Just like PresCat to make an appearance on the summer solstice...
Firmly Team Bourbon. Mellow Corn is interesting, but it isn't my jam. I haven't tried it with a splash of water. I'll have to do that.
You know what may also be good, A malrot mixology French 75, replacing the gin with Malort! Look at you get to do a review of a champagne, its a win-win for everyone!
Happy Midsummer you little rascal you.
I'll drink to that!
no headache ?
thanks for the review! too many jump cuts. see you next video
Spitting out whiskey just seems...wrong to me. Otherwise great review. Seen this before but the look of the bottle gave me hangover from hell and bad college decisions vibes. Ill have to check it out!
I agree. When drank neat, it should be around 35-40% regardless of what it is bottled at. It really does open up the flavor.
So glad you got recommended to me again. Hope you’re doing great PV3
Mellow corn is awesome.
It is NOT a bourbon. It is a corn whiskey. Bourbon must be aged in a new barrel, corn whiskey is aged in used barrels.
You have a cat!! Ahhhh!! Cat dad!!!
It's better than a cigar
I have waited 4 years for this review, the Mellow Corn distilled when I started watching you is now for sale
Any other historical events that happened in 1920 that may or may not be related to prohibition? 😅
Completely disagree with your assessment of Mellow Corn (it sucks even at $13) but I love your attitude 👍
what i took away is "don't drink and horse, cats". is that it? i think i got it right
Soo wholesome
Under the BIB act, this is corn whiskey, not bourbon. The main difference being that it was aged in used barrels instead of new
To me it tastes a lot like Evan Williams, which actually is bourbon
With all the whiskey info online, and on RUclips, you’re think an expert would know better
Why do you spit it out? Barbarian!
Boosting PV3!
the simulation answers. just came to see if you had uploaded like an hour ago
And then someone will want him to mixed it with Malort.
It's all flavored water with a crapload of alcohol.
$13 at costco.
No thanks. Just not a Bourbon lover although I have friends who enjoy this spirit. I am a single malt scotch lover or a high end Rye, 100%, yes Canadian whisky too as it can be amazing - 45 yo Canadian Club worth every penny! I need a spicy Bourbon with a high Rye content! Otherwise too sweet! Cheers!
This isnt bourbon. Bourbon mash must be 51% corn, bur cant exceed 75% corn. Bourbon must also be barrled in new, scortched, american oak casks.
Mellow corn misses out on the mah requirements and the cask requirements. Thats why it's labled "corn whiskey" and not bourbon. Pretty close in taste though.
Malort > Abby's Lust
I’ll stick to my 4 loko
original FourLoko: "Blackout in a Can"
reformulated FourLoko: "Soda with Some Alcohol"
It's not a bourbon. And yeah, watering it down to 35% is eliminating 90% of the flavor.
•RUclips suggests video for Mellow Corn
•Mentions to add water and says anything over 35% is strong
•Leaves
I love Mellow Corn but didn’t really enjoy this video. Just not my style and odd misinformation.
Peavey three you sir are not a little b**** for your splash of water. A higher proof whiskey needs a splash of water. But you might be for other reasons...
But not whiskey
FAIL CPT SWISHY
Ezekiel 23:20
You keep making referencing to prohibition. This corn whiskey is from 1945
Just remember guys, he's a paid actor and the script is written by 2 aging marketing grifters. 100% this one was paid for.
is there a place to find more info for this? Got me curious
OMG! You mean Captain America isn't real either...?!!
Don't be ridiculous. That's like saying the Geico caveman isn't an actual caveman either. Preposterous.
