    Lyrics:
Of war and peace the truth just twists
    It's curfew gull it glides
    Upon four-legged forest clouds
    The cowboy angel rides
With his candle lit into the sun
Though its glow is waxed in black
All except when 'neath the trees of Eden
The lamppost stands with folded arms
    It's iron claws attached
To curbs 'neath holes where babies wail
    Though it shadows metal badge
All and all can only fall
With a crashing but meaningless blow
No sound ever comes from the Gates of Eden
The savage soldier sticks his head in sand
    And then complains
Unto the shoeless hunter who's gone deaf
    But still remains
Upon the beach where hound dogs bay
    At ships with tattooed sails
Heading for the Gates of Eden
    With a time-rusted compass blade
    Aladdin and his lamp
    Sits with Utopian hermit monks
Side saddle on the Golden Calf
And on their promises of paradise
You will not hear a laugh
All except inside the Gates of Eden
    Relationships of ownership
    They whisper in the wings
To those condemned to act accordingly
    And wait for succeeding kings
And I try to harmonize with songs
    The lonesome sparrow sings
There are no kings inside the Gates of Eden
    The motorcycle black Madonna
    Two-wheeled gypsy queen
    And her silver-studded phantom cause
The gray flannel dwarf to scream
As he weeps to wicked birds of prey
Who pick up on his bread crumb sins
And there are no sins inside the Gates of Eden
    The kingdoms of experience
In the precious winds they rot
    While paupers change possessions
Each one wishing for what the other has got
And the princess and the prince
Discuss what's real and what is not
It doesn't matter inside the Gates of Eden
The foreign sun, it squints upon
A bed that is never mine
    As friends and other strangers
From their fates try to resign
    Leaving men wholly totally free
To do anything they wish to do but die
And there are no trials inside the Gates of Eden
At dawn my lover comes to me
And tells me of her dreams
With no attempts to shovel the glimpse
Into the ditch of what each one means
At times I think there are no words
But these to tell what's true
And there are no truths outside the Gates of Eden

I agree: The lyrics are stunningly beautiful and highly complex. However, the message Dylan transmits is actually quite simple. The song plays with what philosophers call degrees of intentionality, that is scaled points of view onto the world. First degree intentionality: How do I see the world? Second degree intentionality: How do I see and interpret others’ views about the world? Third degree: How do I see others’ ways of people seeing the world? Etc.
So, I think Dylan remains basically on the third degree of internationality by letting powerful entities (kings, princes, monks, birds) mock and comment on hierarchically weaker people’s actions or by claiming the knowledge of absolute truth: “Aladdin and his lamp
      Sits with Utopian hermit monks
      Sidesaddle on the Golden Calf
And on their promises of paradise
You will not hear a laugh”. The narrator himself, on the third degree of intentionality, then reveals the foolishness of those views by claiming that human subjectiveness does not matter outside of paradise (“And there are no truths outside the Gates of Eden” / “It doesn’t matter inside the Gates of Eden”) because the only absolute truth only exists inside the Gates of Eden (“ And there are no truths outside the Gates of Eden”). However, it remains unclear whether the narrator actually believes in the existence of Eden because either a) We will never get there or b) Eden doesn’t exist, so all human experience and sought for truth, especially eschatological truth, is subjective and therefore we will never know the absolute truth, except when we die.
I’m leaving apart Milton and Paradise Lost, obviously.

One of the best people I have had the privilege of knowing sadly did not live to see his passionately held convictoon validated. He always maintained that Bob Dylan was unquestionably the most significant English language poet of the 20th century. He had the means and the intellect to become a university Professor or a judge but after he completed his degree he trained as a social worker and devoted his life to helping homeless people and people released from prison to readjust to society, winning awards for running the best social project in the UK. He also loved literature, was a part time rare and antiquarian book dealer and wrote poetry, short stories and a novel. We lost him before his time in a road accident in 2007. He was 34. He would have loved to know about the Nobel prize. I hope he does know where he is. it would be nice if Bob knew how highly he was appreciated by such a true honest fine human being.

    Gates of Eden
Bringin' it all Back Home (1965)
Of war and peace the truth just twists
    Its curfew gull just glides
    Upon four-legged forest clouds
    The cowboy angel rides
With his candle lit into the sun
Though its glow is waxed in black
All except when 'neath the trees of Eden
The lamppost stands with folded arms
    Its iron claws attached
To curbs 'neath holes where babies wail
    Though it shadows metal badge
All and all can only fall

    But still remains
Upon the beach where hound dogs bay
At ships with tattooed sails Heading for the Gates of Eden
    With a time-rusted compass blade
    Aladdin and his lamp

Into the ditch of what each one means

I see all the songs on side B of this album circling a similar theme, something like exit. From the ultimately meaningless exercise of trying to give meaning to your life, by preaching a message, calling out injustice, pointing out hypocrisy, etc. In this song and It's Alright Ma, he finds us all to be doomed, to follow leaders, to repeat our mistakes, to sin, to embrace ignorance and worship false idols. In a certain way, he's giving up. "There is no sense in trying" he says, and "there are no truths outside the gates of Eden." But also, there's ironically a feeling of hopefulness, of freedom. It's alright ma, it's life and life only. Let me forget about today until tomorrow. Strike another match, go start anew. Shedding off the problems and worries of our world, everywhere outside the gates of Eden, allows you to find the freshness in life again, to take a trip on a magic swirling ship, to follow the tambourine man with one hand waving free, silhouetted by the sea, to make no effort to shovel a glimpse into the ditch of what each dream means.

Of war and peace the truth just twists, its curfew gull, it glides
Upon four-legged forest clouds the cowboy angel rides
With his candle lit into the sun, though its glow is waxed in black
All except when 'neath the trees of Eden
The lamppost stands with folded arms, its iron claws attached
To curbs 'neath holes where babies wail, though it shadows metal badge
All and all can only fall with a crashing but meaningless blow
No sound ever comes from the Gates of Eden
The savage soldier just sticks his head in sand and then complains
Unto the shoeless hunter who's gone deaf, but still remains
Upon the beach where hound dogs bay at ships with tattooed sails
Heading for the Gates of Eden
With a time-rusted compass blade, Aladdin and his lamp
Sits with Utopian hermit monks, sidesaddle on the Golden Calf
And on their promises of paradise you will not hear a laugh
All except inside the Gates of Eden
Relationships of ownership, they whisper in the wings
To those condemned to act accordingly and wait for succeeding kings
And I try to harmonize with songs the lonesome sparrow sings
There are no kings inside the Gates of Eden
The motorcycle black Madonna, two-wheeled gypsy queen
And her silver-studded phantom cause the gray flannel dwarf to scream
As he weeps to wicked birds of prey who pick upon his bread crumb sins
And there are no sins inside the Gates of Eden
The kingdoms of experience, in a precious winds they rot
    While paupers change possessions,
Each one wishing for what the other has got
And the princess and the prince discuss what's real and what is not
It doesn't matter inside the Gates of Eden
The foreign sun, it squints upon a bed that is never mine
As friends and other strangers from their fates try to resign
    Leaving men wholly,
Totally free to do anything they wish to do but die
And there are no trials inside the Gates of Eden
At dawn, my lover comes to me and tells me of her dreams
With no attempts to shovel the
Glimpse into the ditch of what each one means
At times I think there are no words but these to tell what's true
And there are no truths outside the Gates of Eden

    "Gates of Eden"
    Bob Dylan
    [Verse 1]
Of war and peace the truth just twists
    Its curfew gull it glides
    Upon four-legged forest clouds
    The cowboy angel rides
With his candle lit into the sun
Though its glow is waxed in black

Many years after, a furry troubador used to sit with guitar on the Grass of Lompoc, playing this and other Dylan songs, , in the time beflre the great p?agues.
I have forgotten his name, a failure of mine -
but i have forgotten the names of girlfriends who left, within a few weeks time.
Only one , after all, still clings; and i heard she died last fall in Bob's natal Hibbing.
Only the strange dark rhymes of Dylan remain.
I'm still sure we all live inside the gates of Eden.

A comments section with desperate attempts to prove who’s been listening to Dylan longest & who understands him & who doesn’t?
The elders should know better when they’re thinking that they’re impossibly at one with Dylan & the younger in this case naive is the best word for it, but you’re not as naive as the elders, you’re still naive very much so but the naive elders are coming across much more naive than your naive selves!

The side of the vinyl album that this is from has, in order: Mr Tambourine Man, It's All Right Ma I'm Only Bleeding, Gates Of Eden, and It's All Over Now, Baby Blue.
I think that is what rock writers refer to as a tour de force.
I can't help thinking these tracks would have been better with a band behind him, though. Still, Dylan's always been about transition, and I suppose this era was one of many. It's hard to imagine where rock music would have gone without him now. And I do mean rock - he was nothing like a folk singer after the third album.

Of war and peace the truth just twists, its curfew gull, it glides
Upon four-legged forest clouds the cowboy angel rides
With his candle lit into the sun, though its glow is waxed in black
Todos, exceto quando 'sob as árvores do Éden
All except when 'neath the trees of Eden
The lamppost stands with folded arms, its iron claws attached
To curbs 'neath holes where babies wail, though it shadows metal badge
All and all can only fall with a crashing but meaningless blow
Nenhum som vem dos Portões do Éden
No sound ever comes from the Gates of Eden
The savage soldier just sticks his head in sand and then complains
Unto the shoeless hunter who's gone deaf, but still remains
Upon the beach where hound dogs bay at ships with tattooed sails
    Rumo aos Portões do Éden
Heading for the Gates of Eden
With a time-rusted compass blade, Aladdin and his lamp
Sits with Utopian hermit monks, sidesaddle on the Golden Calf
And on their promises of paradise you will not hear a laugh
Todos, exceto dentro dos Portões do Éden
All except inside the Gates of Eden
Relações de propriedade, eles sussurram nos bastidores
Relationships of ownership, they whisper in the wings
To those condemned to act accordingly and wait for succeeding kings
And I try to harmonize with songs the lonesome sparrow sings
There are no kings inside the Gates of Eden
A motocicleta negra Madonna, rainha cigana de duas rodas
The motorcycle black Madonna, two-wheeled gypsy queen
And her silver-studded phantom cause the gray flannel dwarf to scream
As he weeps to wicked birds of prey who pick upon his bread crumb sins
And there are no sins inside the Gates of Eden
The kingdoms of experience, in a precious winds they rot
Enquanto os indigentes trocam de posses
    While paupers change possessions
Each one wishing for what the other has got
    E a princesa e o príncipe discutem o que é real e o que não é
And the princess and the prince discuss what's real and what is not
Não importa dentro dos Portões do Éden
It doesn't matter inside the Gates of Eden
The foreign sun, it squints upon a bed that is never mine
As friends and other strangers from their fates try to resign
    Deixando os homens totalmente
    Leaving men wholly
Totally free to do anything they wish to do but die
And there are no trials inside the Gates of Eden
At dawn, my lover comes to me and tells me of her dreams
Sem nenhuma tentativa de cavar o
With no attempts to shovel the
Glimpse into the ditch of what each one means
At times I think there are no words but these to tell what's true

I am 75, I have been listening to Bob since the beginning, since 1963 when I was 17. Gates of Eden probally his very best. "There are no kings inside the Gates of Eden" JESUS is the only King. Inside the Gates of Eden, No Man Made Utopia will ever happen, Only JESUS Saves. John 3:16-17

I dont remember Jesus being in eden, only god, satan , and the two protagonists of the story. Your jesus figure comes much later

@@davyroger3773 Jesus Christ is God and Creator and omnipresent so He was inside the Gates of Eden and warned them not to eat of the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Life because their eyes would be opened and they would know good and evil. Knowing their fate in advance He observed how Satan deceived Eve who ate of the forbidden fruit who then deceived Adam who also ate which led to the fall of mankind. The last line is the ultimate statement - "there are no truths outside the Gates of Eden!". Dylan played the devil's advocate all his life blowing hot and cold. He once claimed to be a Messianic Jew who gave his life to Christ as documented on his Slow Train Coming and Saved albums but then later claimed to have made a deal with the devil! However you see him, as he has his detractors, he is an enigmatic artist who wrote some of the greatest songs in rock history. This being one of them.

The lyrics of this song seem very pretentious, as if Dylan was purposely trying to condescend over his listeners with lyrics that make no sense but supposedly sound profound and sophisticated.
