- The Books of sorrow are the collective tale of Oryx, from Destiny: The Taken King. This is the lore of this story and of the Hive, The Darkness and the Osmium dynasty. Hearing all this about Oryx makes me think of why he was such an easy boss. Had killed billions or trillions, but was ended by a guy found in a run down parking lot
I mean look at the heart of the black garden, fucking cake walk, this is a problem games face all the time, lore vs gameplay
BlackSparks it's like a Divine cosmic fate of irony. The god king of an empire, Slayer of worlds, reality's nightmare. Found dead drifting towards Saturn, killed by six rag tag guardians, who where all found in outside of the city, next to a rusted out cars, who have little to no idea who is his.
BlackSparks The big difference between all the other worlds Oryx had conquered and this one is our knowledge. Thanks to Toland and Eris, we knew the ins and outs of the Hive and how to beat him.
Funnily enough, it was the death of Crota, the screw up son of Oryx, that led to his demise. When we killed Crota, Oryx felt it in his worm. A massive part of Oryx's tribute came through Crota, and Oryx came to get it back. He rushed into the system not as a calculated King, but as a vengeful father, and this was his doom.
The Queen stopped Oryx from getting to the City. We boarded the Dreadnaught and slew his physical form as many had done, but it was what came after that differentiated us from the rest. We demolished his Court, stopped his rituals, and killed his champions across the system. Because we had become ascendant, we were able to enter his Throne World. We then killed his Warpriest, Daughters, and Golgoroth. We raided his cellars and released the Light he had stored up. All of this killing we had done resulted in the loss of even more tribute to Oryx. When we fought him in the raid, he was barely even a shadow of himself.
Oryx's greatest strength was also his greatest weakness. His worm, which had given him endless life and power, was starving when we reached him. There was not enough killing flowing to him to support his power. I would say he was probably a dead man walking when we reached him. Yet even still, we needed to blast him with pure Light to do any damage.
Because of what we knew from Eris and Toland, we were able to succeed where all other species had failed. The Eucamene did well when they killed Oryx with overwhelming force, but they did not follow up correctly. After removing Oryx from the picture, they needed to remove the command under him to starve him out and make him weak and desperate.
@DBread Thank you for taking my comment into consideration and typing so much. Helped me understand more of the lore in the game, as well as made me realize that that's most likely the cause of Oryx's downfall.

@@Shivian124 they were revived through necromancy. Oryx just needed to reenact their nature. When they die in their ascendent plane, it's a true death, as long as no one tries to revive them

Freaking brilliant use of thematic character tropes. Only question is why bungie couldn't properly translate the amazing lore and story into a coherent and playable campaign in Destiny 1.

I kinda agree. Some of the factions are GREAT! The Eliksni (Fallen), Vex, and Hive are all quite interesting. Hive have allot of "Cosmic Lore" that honestly should be made into a comic/graphic novel. The Eliksni are just a bunch of scavs who Im 100% sure are completely reasonable people, just no one tries to reason with them.. And the Vex (I think) were made by Clovis Bray and thus we kinda undid ourselves there. As for Cabal.. No one likes Rhino Romans from space. In terms of "great evil" and the Darkness, the Hive are probably the faction that is the end game. Savathun and her sister are still out there, I think and we should probably end them too.
I personally want a story where we help out some friendly Fallen, not just one tho like Spider or Variks. I wanna see friendly fallen out in the field fighting with us, not against us
they had a decent story but the lead story writer had copyright over the story and left the team last minute. they had very little time to create a new story before launch

You know, the whole "Taken King" title really sounds more badass now that I know the entire story behind oryx.
I really wish Oryx was the final bad guy in the Destiny franchise. His backstory is setup so well to be the all powerful evil king that has overcome everything in his way. Shame he was used so early in the franchise.
Oryx is evil, yes, but Aurash was not. His tale is one of tragedy, not evil. The true evil is the Worm Gods, the true Darkness.
HammersongIndustries exactly. That's why I think of him as a great villain. He isn't just some bad guy that loves being evil. His character is tragic, his motivations understandable, his reasoning solid, etc. Throughout the books of sorrow I found myself rooting for Oryx in a strange way.
Casey Jemery I think there's a fan theory of oryx is not dead because we killed him in his throne world but not in our world. But I haven't really looked at it and the touch of malice may contain oryx's soul or at least a fragment of it. So if there is a chance of oryx coming back would be difficult without stepping on the lore. But yes it would be cool if oryx to come back his lore is one of my favorite if not my number one antagonist with in the destiny universe.

Artorias Elucidor I hope he's dead for good, his siblings reactions are going to be interesting and who knows what they could do with the tablets of ruin, I'm not talking about using taken themselves, Savathûn would be able to use it in pretty scary ways.
Oryx was set up in vanilla destiny but not at all as the big bad guy. He was a Hive god yes, but not the only one and certainly not definitely the strongest anymore, the others wouldn't have stopped fighting at all.
As for the theory that Oryx isn't dead, I'd say touch of malice doesn't contain his soul but much rather contains some taken power or something like that due to the dark rituals that Eris performed to create the weapon of sorrow, much like Thorn.

Byf is a great storyteller. He managed to take the Book of Sorrows, one of the largest, most influential, and most informative pieces of Destiny and tell it in a way that most people could understand.

It's fitting that Guardians took out Oryx: They are a purer expression of the Sword Logic/Blind Truth than his Hive. The Hive war so their worms won't devour them and to prove that they are real, a part of the Final Shape. Guardians were supposedly given power to guard the Traveler and fight the darkness, but the truth is we do what WE want. The tyrannical light wielding Warlords who the Iron Lords took out are proof of that. Guardians fight to protect what they hold dear, to collect some shiny bauble, or just for the fun of it. Do what you will > Do as I say.
guardians don’t use the sword logic, as they die and are revived. hive throne worlds are different. that’s why acolytes in gms don’t become literal gods after killing us oncr
One of the core tennants of destiny has always been, and will always be this: Guardians make there own fate. We fight not with the logic of a sword, dividing strenght from weakness, a blind truth. We fight with what is better described as the logic of a bomb. We take weakness and we make it strong, a subversion of the sword logic, a complex truth. A harder road. But, in many respects, a better one.

This right here should be turned into a film or something similar that explores all the races of destiny and their origins, that all lead up to present destiny. Showing the origins of all the races, making them more fleshed out and not just moving targets with guns.

What I love about the books of sorrow are the many complex philosophical, mathematical, and thermodynamical ideas. References to topology, acausal logic, and defined divisions by zero; even philosophy of entropy.
He killed a god and became a god himself. Oryx has no chill. Awesome stuff as always Byf can't wait for the next part!

You guys are saying bungie wrote it, but that's pretty much all they did. They didn't frame it up, present it in a coherent way, or even make it integral to understanding the game or create a good system for understanding any aspect of the lore for that matter. Little bits of information that you can find does not a universe make.
At least they made it better in Destiny 2 to be sorta Dark Souls like, where you find items and weapons and can search the lore right there and piece it together that way. Most people tend to like it done like that.
MegaDrain I still think a codex or something would be better than the system they have. Essentially take the grimoir cards and put them in the actual game.

Ninjagrime Just add a warlock NPC into the tower named "The Lore-keeper" or something. Have byf voice act the NPC and allow the NPC to give the player "lessons", which are videos like this one.

Wow holy shit. I never played D1 so I’m late to a lot of the lore. So I started watching Byf’s videos in Chronological order in preparation for Witch Queen and now this makes sense why the last expansion will be called final shape. I thought it was such a stupid name at first but seeing the words “Final Shape” and “Destiny” in the same quote was an OHHHHHHH SHIT moment. Props to the writers at Bungie for playing the long long game

Hey Byf, so since Oryx summoned the siblings back through trickery and war could Ghaul accidentally summon Oryx, The Taken King back to life by taking something as major like our light and the traveler?
lol Jonn I am waiting for this, The whole "the taken will never go away" thingy. It's almost guaranteed that Oryx will return either through taking or navigating/exploring unknown worlds by savathun or xivu.
lol Jonn there's also the possibility that he's coming back as we speak. Remember. His soul was contained within the Touch of Malice. Its now destroyed, meaning his soul is free. His body is still intact.
Freed soul + still intact body = Oryx possibly coming back to life.

Anthony Jackson in theory yes, they would have do it by mimicking his nature. Whether that be taking or exploring is unknown now that oryx morphed twice. But the sisters would also have to be at least as powerful as Oryx was as well which is unlikely. But I would enjoy a good plot twist or device using this logic as much as the next person.

Phenomenal. I have read the lore so many times, but the hive lore always draws me back. I was certain that Vex lore would have been my greatest interest, but the hive ideology is so fascinating. This series has been a great complement to the lore. Very enjoyable to listen to, and the the animator makes it great to watch as well.

Holy shit, after all she's the only one who knows Oryx on a personal level and has a personal vendetta and cares enough to get rid of Oryx, I haven't read all the books so correct me if I'm wrong if Oryx did end up terminating her and exacting his revenge finally. But if she never did get a worm so doesn't that mean she's still a krill? and in the book it said they have naturally short life spans so she may have died naturally before Oryx could get to her

I wish there was a special class of guardian in Destiny 2 that resorts to turning to the Darkness in the absence of the light. And just like how guardians of the Light have subclasses of the Void, Solar and Ark energies, The guardians of Darkness would have Aspects(subclasses) of War, Trickery, and Power(whatever Oryx's aspect was). That would've made things a hell of a lot more interesting and would've allowed Bungie to make a new pvp mode of guardians of the Light vs the Darkness and new factions to join giving players way more options.
I genuinely didn't think destiny had a great story until I started watching your videos Byf keep it up!!
