Totally agree on all your points but I still love my D22, mostly because it’s simple, goes pretty well off-road and I don’t have to worry about it like a $100k 79 or Patrol. I’d buy a new version with coil over setup and 20% more power in a heart beat!
Agree with lack of power at 98kw, however use my 2010 d22 for towing a car trailer loaded mostly Melbourne to Sydney and has never let me down. The driver seat for me seems sweet as I spend over 9 hours behind the wheel minus fuel stops. Back seat is rubbish never carry passengers in the rear. Internal road noise is real bad, decent stereo eliminates this problem. Steering not the best but handles better with loaded trailer, don't know why but it does. Still in my opinion good bang for the buck!
My d22 has the qd32 engine that ive just poped a td27 turbo on it, thing went from being a slug to performing like my old p11 bluebird sr20 na. As for the steering and suspension im not to fussy, these ute have way better lock then Toyotas of the same era and my torsion bars havent broken yet nor any of the ball joints touch wood
They still sell them brand new In Southern Africa, I bought one in 2019, very agricultural but half the price of hilux or dmax so can't compare them really. Solid and reliable work horse but very poor safely rating.
I have recently bought a 06 3.0 and am pretty happy with a very stock version. First thing... Bilstein suspention then EGR block. Drives pretty smooth but lacks in power. I kinda like the vehicle though mainly because it is factory stock with only 1 owner.
I have to say if your gonna buy a d22 it's gotta be the vg33e 3.3L v6 petrol. They are absolutely guzzlers but 125kw nice and quiet a little more weight over the front end and also they are unstoppable made me fall in love with the D22 all over again
I have looked into those as a project as I believe you can import a supercharger of sorts for them from either the states or the UK? Don't know if it's true but you better believe it has my attention 😂
Yea it's true although from what I've heard from people In the states the N/A are more fun/responsive to drive ? Best bet is to throw the turbo set up off the 300z they run the same motor
Mate I just bought my d22 and after a couple of kilomiters runing it I realized that all complains u said is definetly true! Omg the seats are terrible and the car has a lot o play on the steering wheel.. but apart from that it is fine
im at about 45min with the seat atm, thinking of packing the front of it up to tilt the base a bit giving a more comfortable leg angle while driving. One thing many people dont really think of with these cars is they always were a basic farm truck, and they still do it very well now, as standard they would tick majority of boxes for farmers as a run around farm hack. they didnt require all the fancy stuff that would add to cost, I'd say confidently the d22 was the last "factory farm truck" with the bare basics, no cruise, no touch screen head unit. bare minimum so little could go wrong. as for your cruise, I installed an e-cruise in my YD, real easy and cheap mod you can DIY. the fitment can just about look factory too
@@travisclarke3088 yup. Got mine off eBay for about that. Easily paid for itself on the trip from Melb to Bris… and was piss easy to install. Remote key fob is another upgrade I’d recommend, best $20 I’ve spent on it.

Back seat is crap! It’s way too small. And I’ve never gotten used (even after 6 years and 150km) to the gear lever throw being so long, once every few weeks I’ll still crunch a gear 😂
They definitely were but they're a tough little nugget! While I appreciate that they're pretty rough and simple as a result, I'd also appreciate if my steering wasnt the thing that felt loose 😂

I had a plastic sounding rattle in my engine bay on the passenger side and I thought it might’ve been the same thing behind the dash but it turned out to where the air intake runs along the inside of the side guard and connects around the air box with a bit of foam to seal it up that part right there was the cause of the plastic sounding rattle all I done was shove a rag in between the battery and the air intake pipe to stop the vibration and hasn’t made the noise since might be something you should check before you go ripping your dash apart haha
@@WoodyWombat I'll have a check. Cheers for the tip. I don't plan on ripping my dash apart anymore, I just play Korn and Rammstein real loud now and I dont notice any sounds
The stock tune is anemic, I ended up tuning mine which made is a lot better. The 3" exhaust I would argue is too big, mine ended up impacting in several locations and there's not a lot of room at the back end for the exhaust to fit between larger tyres and the towbar attachment. Stock speakers are a disgrace, I replaced the fronts with 6x9's but the rears you will need to make spacers and get shallow speakers, under 50mm will fit with spacers. The problem there is the rail for the power windows is right behind the factory speaker location, the previous ZD30 models had speakers there, the YD25 model didn't. The front is, well its something you get used to but you shouldn't have to. IT's a real struggle on some roads, but it at least keeps you focused and awake, no slacking off whilst driving a D22 😁
Hey, very strong 5 points mate! I have the same truck but from 2008... done a lot of work on it and this video kinda shows me that my fight is not over! 😁😁 About the driver seat i really want to try one from a Nissan Terrano 2 ( name in Europe) or a Patrol y61. I belive its plug and play but i haven't got the chance to try it yet. There are more comfy tractors than this truck! 😁
damn the international D22 are so different, my 2001 nissan frontier aka also a d22 has cruise control, oem steering wheel controls and plenty of power for my use, really only thing they share is steering is weaker although I have never had problems. mine does have all the factory extra options except the sunroof which is real shame as I would have wanted one but my dad didnt order it back in the day.
It's just an extended single cab really- you rip out the carpet and you'll see, the drivers row cabin space is the same unfortunately as I am 6ft4. Edit: Over 800 photo's of the build for mine.
G'day mate They not bad car's But every time you go 4xdriving it's always something to work on the car Specially on the Corrogation road Chassis bolts get missing . Cheers Asha 👍
Hey Steph I have a 10inch RF behind seat in box can send you dimensions of box I made. just required spacing out seat catch with a couple of washer to get clearance from face if sub to rear of seat.
I’d be one of those you seen snap a torsion bar adjuster… shit situation to be in in a boghole I tell ya but a few great mates and some laughs and it was home and fixed mate literally 1 bolt and it’s out
Splines on these torsion bars are rubbish they should of been a far corser spline and longer so when they do move back and forward when wishbone bushes start to wear you still have plenty of spline still in contact so the male spline doen't slip around inside your the FM spline and drop the front end this can happen backing up over a rut or log leaving less than 20 mm of spline inside the wishbone housing
The zd30 Navaras are still absolutely pathetic for stock power (or at least mine). I still have and love my navara now with some power upgrades but I recently got into a stock GU turbo 4.2 and only 4 more kw rated but it fells like it has 50 more kw driving stock vs stock. The gu will actually do 100km with my small canopy and RTT on. Be luck if I ever saw 100 out of my stock navara loaded the same, ‘110kw’ no way.
Hi Do you need some great lighting for your car to help you better driving, off-road? We're the pro auto lighting company for nearly 20 year and we're looking for sponsorship!
Yea front coil overs would be nice but then they would be double the price my d22 is stock with throtle controler and egr block goes better than my rb30 efi patrol
Very true, but not gunna stop me from doing the conversion and trying 😂 part of me just likes to pull things apart, would definitely appreciate the softer ride too!
I can not help myself. 1. Your 9 inch lights on the front limit airflow. 2. Intercooler regarding noise And Your anal about power so limit the drag. 3 tyres? What you got? That contributes heaps to road noise I have found.
Ok , so off the bat I will say bagging out the d22 seem quite a common thread throughout your vids. I get the feeling if you could afford something else..... you'd jump at it. So then begs the question...... other than profiteering, why do the vids? It's of no use to anyone to bag stuff out. Do a vid of 5 things you love about the d22!!! Also as a rebuttle can I just say..... 1. Steering. Most folks understand raising ANY IFS vehicle over 2" is asking for trouble, regardless of any aftermarket crap you put on it to overcome problems. So take ownership of that mistake and don't blame the Nav. 2. Torsion Bars.... hey can't argue with you there. 3. Radiator/running hot. Well any quality cooling/Radiator joint will tell you, the bigger radiator is no more effective than standard..... reason- bigger volume of water = harder to cool down!! 4. Power. I had a standard engine with a chip. It went great. No issue. I now have no chip, but intercooler, turbo, standard boost, standard radiator, throttle controller and mine goes like shit off a shovel!!! 5. Front seats. If I had a dollar for everyone that sits in mine and comments how comfortable the seats are..... I'd be very VERY rich. 6. Noisy. Can't argue. 7. Creature comforts. If thats what your after go for a D40. You bought a farm/trading truck,..... again own your decision don't blame the Nav.
This video is extremely beneficial for anyone looking to purchase a similar car and wanting to know REAL world frustrations so they can make a more informed purchasing decision. Everyone loves to "show off" their cars and tell you everything that they love, but not many people pause to honestly let you know their frustrations. All cars have their good and bad points, he clearly loves the car which is why he continually upgrades it the way he does, this video is intentionally focussing on the negative points as you can tell by the title.
Thanks Dan! I appreciate you understanding! Lauren, One of my next videos out will be "5 things I love about my D22" so stay tuned for that! 😄 "What I could afford" didn't bind me to a D22, my options were open to most vehicles on the market but I made the informed decision to stick with the D22, maybe that's another video idea for me! 😊 I look forward to kicking much bigger financial goals in the next 24 months than just owning an expensive vehicle. I've managed to find a car I like that does what I need (reliably enough) with a community I LOVE and I'm gunna stick it out until it can no longer do what I require it to (heavy long distance towing, etc). I take the mickey a lot sure, but the overwhelming response to my videos is that they're honest and relatable to the average driver and I intend to keep them that way. I'm aware of your points and believe I mention some of those points in either this video or other videos. If not this video, you're absolutely right and I should have been more careful in ensuring everyone was made aware of why I may have these issues (eg, the suspension lift compromising steering). I probably get a bit complacent in the fact that most of my (engaging) audience are modifying their cars in similar ways to myself and so will likely face the same issues I do 🙂 I'll be more thorough next time, thank you for your comment, I do appreciate the feedback and constructive criticism! 🙂 Regards, Clay
Super hard to get a good alignment once they're lifted! I'm 3 inches suspension lifted and about to drop the front as my rear sags a little with the weight of my canopy on the back and then I'll put a 1 inch body lift to compensate for the lack of wheel arch clearance for my next set of tyres being a size bigger. Thank you for your order, too! It's on its way! 😁

The front is, well its something you get used to but you shouldn't have to. IT's a real struggle on some roads, but it at least keeps you focused and awake, no slacking off whilst driving a D22 😁
It's steering rack needs adj nut in top reverse thread. Torsion bar ride caddy over bumps
Have you looked at the jamie knobel remap for more power and torque
I'm aware of them but I intend on changing the exhaust again, doing a new turbo, airbox and then doing a tune 👌 after August! 🤩
G'day mate
They not bad car's
But every time you go 4xdriving it's always something to work on the car
Specially on the Corrogation road
Chassis bolts get missing .
Cheers Asha 👍
Yep! There's always something after a trip 🥲
Laughs in vg30 v6 when talking about kw power, cries in vg30 v6 when talking about creek crossings hahahaha
But what we all have in common is that we all cry over our nav at some point 😂
@@ap4x4 haha
What seats you got ? Or just a seat cover
Neoprene seat covers from the Wetseat. They're actually $300 well spent!
I have been trying to find a subwoofer to suit this car. Recommendations?
I have a Kicker 11HS8 slimline sub that I'll be putting in at some stage, probably on the back wall!
Hey Steph I have a 10inch RF behind seat in box can send you dimensions of box I made. just required spacing out seat catch with a couple of washer to get clearance from face if sub to rear of seat.
I’m sure they fixed all the faults from the D 22 now they call it an NP 300 I Just bought a D 22 and have the same steering issue
Awesome video mate . I was gonna buy 1 . I’m now rethinking other dual cabs
I’d be one of those you seen snap a torsion bar adjuster… shit situation to be in in a boghole I tell ya but a few great mates and some laughs and it was home and fixed mate literally 1 bolt and it’s out
Great to have good mates about to help and make light of those situations!
I hate the top bell housing bolt, you know, the one closest to the turbo out flange, hate that bolt…..
Let’s say you were thinking of an engine swap. What would you put in?.
Good upload👍🏼
4JJ1 for the win! But when the donk pops I'll likely just rebuild another YD 🤷
The lack of cup holders also sucks
I bought two cup holders for my D22 a couple of years ago. They go in place of the ash trays, work well.
relatable bro love your channel
Thanks mate!
Do body lift and roof racks then you'll know what noise is
I'm literally about to do both of these 😆
Splines on these torsion bars are rubbish they should of been a far corser spline and longer so when they do move back and forward when wishbone bushes start to wear you still have plenty of spline still in contact so the male spline doen't slip around inside your the FM spline and drop the front end this can happen backing up over a rut or log leaving less than 20 mm of spline inside the wishbone housing
90% of the problems you are expressing with the vehicle are self inflicted, these problems are poor upgrades hasn't been done right.
I hate how something else always breaks in the process of fixing something
Every. Damn. Time. 🥲
New EGR valve every 100,000kms costs you $110. EGR block will get you put off the road.
D22 are just a basic older design with very minimal. While d40 is a newer design with all the bells and whists
Agree! They catered to a different market for sure 🙂
The d40 isn't a truck, it's a jacked up car.
I can not help myself.
1. Your 9 inch lights on the front limit airflow.
2. Intercooler regarding noise
And
Your anal about power so limit the drag.
3 tyres? What you got? That contributes heaps to road noise I have found.
My 2005 zd is ridiculously slow. Need a tune haha
All navaras need a tune 😂
Lauren,
One of my next videos out will be "5 things I love about my D22" so stay tuned for that! 😄
"What I could afford" didn't bind me to a D22, my options were open to most vehicles on the market but I made the informed decision to stick with the D22, maybe that's another video idea for me!
I probably get a bit complacent in the fact that most of my (engaging) audience are modifying their cars in similar ways to myself and so will likely face the same issues I do 🙂
I'll be more thorough next time, thank you for your comment, I do appreciate the feedback and constructive criticism! 🙂
Regards,
Clay
My d22 has such bad wheel alignment :(
Super hard to get a good alignment once they're lifted!
Should have got a qd32 one!!
Should have got the TD42 one 😅
I hate the torsion bar suspension. It’s terrible
Dancing with the idea of the PSR coiliver kit 🤔
Is this car a good 4x4 for me to get? If not bro do you know any around the 15-20k price tag that are reliable and decent 4x4ing? I’m not crazy into it like how probably you are I just wanna go for drives along the beach/ out bush nothing to hectic, I’m looking at these cars for sure and was wondering if you’d have any advice while I’m looking for one, cheers mate God bless
Hey mate ever find out a better pick?in the same position as you
Hahaha so true but I still love my 22.
Oh I love mine to bits but it doesn't mean it's without quirks! 🤪 Awesome little utes!
Hmmm. Maybe it is time to update? I mean they are agricultural at best hahaha.
I've invested too much 😂 would be lying if I said I wasn't looking at GQs for a project though 😅 #chopchop
Bruh, my 1989 s10 pickup had cruze control that bullshit a 2011 to not have cruze control.
One of ya greats
Thanks mate!
😂 it's a 4x4 brother not a race car only thing I agree with is the steering absolutely sloppy but still better than a Ford ranger any day 😂😂😂😂
Couldn’t agree more 😂😂😂
Seems the general consensus hey! 😂 #navlife
Very relatable
Thanks, I'm definitely not buying this piece of shit now. I'm glad I saw your video.
Zd d22 is guttless af on hills.... Farm animals overtake you like your standing still
1 it’s a nav
2 it’s a nav
3 it’s a nav
4 it’s a nav
5 ^
Hurtful but fair 😂 but still better than a hilux 😘
Bruh 12 kw is nothing going from 2,5 to 3 liter
Say an audi diesel 1,5 has 80 hp
Or even 100hp
Now their 2 L has 175hp 😂😂
So a 3liter is literally a downgrade.
Better just to tune and mod the 2,5 to be a better engine
👍
i think you are the 5 things thats why you hate that D22. you should leave it as it is
Why did you buy it, should do your research first.
What car is perfect? I'd have been doing this video regardless what vehicle I bought.
Show me a vehicle that's without fault and I'll start a free OnlyFans accout! 😆
Worst front suspension ride.
only navara to get is the 2000 model 3.2L qd32
