My friend just visited NY and he said that rats are EVERYWHERE. Underneath cars, outside every restaurant, and pretty much just strolling through the streets. I can't fathom how a school Montebello has such an infestation of rats. A lot of disease is carried by these furry animals.

It's funny how a lot of the comments I've seen, talk about how they had all summer to fix this, but the real issue is, how TF are we (americans) comfortable with conditions like this, in SCHOOLS. They shouldn't come CLOSE to an infestation.

I used to make fun of the kids who lied about their address so they can attend Alhambra High or San Gabriel. But after seeing this story I understand completely why they do this.🤷🏻♂️

Man, I'm glad I graduated from here in the 80s, never saw one single rat or even a small mouse. Maybe a fly or two, but that was it. It was once a model school, rearing Ivy League and Oxford scholars every year. When I was there, the peer pressure I felt was to do well in school. Seriously, getting A's wasn't considered nerdy, it was considered admirable. The school was also clean, but it's so sad to see its demise now.
Sadly, those days are gone. ALL our institute of education are "indoctrination stations"! That's the most important activity going on right now!
I was there in 1987..VNE .....fighting with east la. Those s were the good days.

I also attended school in Montebello in the late 90’s but lived in East LA it was considered a privilege to be able to attend school in Montebello & it was suburbia back then. Sad to see it become what it is

As someone who literally goes to this school (11th grader), it honestly makes me sad that they took this long to recognize this. Should have had more care put into watching the school during the quarantine, so we don't have a load of rat shit in the rooms
My kids go here as well , so sad. But, you guys are on the hills and with covid holding you guys back from going it’s understandable. Still, the school should have been taken care of while you guys were out .. Smh..

I bet they moved in from the fields to the north and the Moon Valley Nurseries Farm to the west. As soon as school is out they move in and when school goes back in session they go back to the fields as much as possible. I lived in an 8 story building, when they tore down the 10 story next door we never got rid of the rodents so I moved. Exterminators never could control it. They constantly ate new holes through the walls.

As a recently former student of schurr, I remember my teacher saying (a month before we graduated) that they were installing new desks and “cleaning” the classrooms for it so they know well in June about the problem because the school has been seen to for the past months
Also we had a large population of squirrels at one point and they were peacefully thriving on campus and they exterminated them but the rats they couldn’t and they were actually a disturbance, make it make sense
