  • Mikey February qualifying for the World Tour is about a country gradually becoming what Nelson Mandela envisioned so many years prior. Mikey’s qualification isn’t just about a black person making it to the greatest show in surf. It’s about a country that’s healing. It’s about Nelson Mandela’s vision of achieving equal opportunity for all coming to fruition. It’s a triumph over circumstances. It’s starting your own ad agency when the rule of law stands against you. It’s believing in a dream and following it with reckless abandon. Mikey February is a testament to that.

Thanks for the great video. It's refreshingly forward about race and prejudice in surf culture and leaves me wanting to see more of February's surfing. He's such a stylish surfer and I hope he stays on tour. I think the competitive surf world could benefit from some more high-lines and emphasizing the aesthetics of a well connected wave. I'd love to see Machado and February team up for the grooviest edit ever.

As an African American who has been surfing in Southern California since the mid '80s I always just wanted to be recognized as a surfer not as a black guy who surfs. I grew up in Orange County and of course almost all my surf buddies were white so I just wanted to be one of the boys. I can't tell you how many racists remarks I've received but also have seen how my presence has changed a lot of people's perception. Anyway, I was super stoked to see Mikey make it on tour. I think he needs a bit more girth to add to that flow, then he's gonna be a serious force to reckon with.

I watched some black kids paddle out one morning.
      thought to myself,
“shit, imagine a generation of black surfers dominating surf competitions.”

While Aborigional Native Americans of the Islands were prominent pearl divers (1500) and the Africans who designed their first surf boards made out of wood! Amazing to watch and also having a fierce impact it is making on these African youngsters, learning how to swim is very important so surfing lessons are ultimately and literally saving lives!

Jojó de Olivença and Tinguinha Lima, both from Brazil, made the then WCT Top 44 way before Mickey February. In any case, Mickey's entrance is definitely emblematic due to his South African background and all the racial issues concerning the country's history.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. You bring a bad (worse) name to Hawaii by feeling the need to bring your superior knowledge to the table. I don't know how to tell you this nicely but you look like you need a surf and a RUN! Clearly weren't with much of that intelligence stuff either.
With nothing going for you in this life it's clear why you should have such a severely disabled view on anything more complex than wiping your arse.

@@Californiansurfer I understand, I just did not take kindly to underestimation of the struggles of black South Africans. I am white and the fact that mikey is so highly regarded is still incredible for my mostly previously backwards country. Cheers downey!

Nathan Harrison I have been surfing sine twelve years old everyone thought I was Hawaiian which I am Mexican American. It was funny how all the white kids at HB pier thought surfing was a white thing. It’s for everyone. P.s. watch the Pepsi surfers on RUclips. Aloha. If your ever in Cali let me know. We have bob Hawaiians in Gardena, , San calemente surf museum in San Clemente. Downey California. P.s. I surfed new baffalo Michigan. That was crazy.
