I've been practicing this song every day for years, but I can't imitate it. This is a very difficult performance. I am practicing with the goal of playing and performing this live version exactly the same. It is one of my lifelong wishes.

Both have very distinctive character in their playing that is unmistakably them. Hugely talented musicians

His Jazz licks are sophisticated. His Blues runs scratch that one itch in my soul and his diminished bridges remind us that he is accomplished beyond any other guitarist in our generation. No wonder Miles Davis preferred playing with Robben!

Yes! Indeed Robben is far ahead in his repertoire but don't forget Larry Carlton, or rather Larry Carl-Tone! Robben learned a whole bunch of melody/harmony lead work listening to Larry,, as did hundreds of other guitarists (Literally!)! He and Larry used to play/jam at the Baked Potato nightclub in North Hollywood, along with Lee Ritenour!!!
In fact, Larry was one of the founders of the jazz-fusion style with Ritenour, and a little from Robben! He was from Northern California, but would come down to L.A. for studio gigs and some t.v. studio work. But yes, the diminished scale is very recognizable along with his saxophone style approach to doing solos! Cheers!!!

I am grateful you included this information! It helps to round out my knowledge and understanding for these music genres that I care so much about. And it its own way, contributes to my own playing. Music has always been important to me. The guitar has been my passion literally since before I started kindergarten. I’m 68 now so this is a lifelong love affair.

I wish Mr Ford and John Mayer did a tune together. That will be epic

The melody is so perfect in this song. His guitar is my favorite vocalist.
