Bear this in mind - there are numerous reasons why Ireland have improved so much. The number 1 reason (imo) was the decision to model our game based on how New Zealand play through all age levels. Without that foundation we would not have reached this level.
As an Englishman married to an Irish woman i have seen this dominance up close and i was probably more gutted by there defeat to New Zealand. Few teams will be able to replicate this style and it should keep Ireland close until the next tournament where hopefully they'll go further.
Our set piece imploded after the Grand Slam win. Im not sure why. It went from being our strength to our biggest weakness. And it wasnt just in the world cup, it was misfiring throughout all our warm up games too. The only game where we seemed to get it right was the pool game against Scotland. It cost us the game against the All Blacks and made the South African game too close for comfort. I think we have some excellent young players coming though, we're nut just dominating at senior level in Europe, our under 20s have won successive grand slams too. And I think that Jack Crowley and Ciaran Frawley will more than cover the hole that Sexton has left. But the 2023 World Cup was one we let get away, and you have to wonder if we'll ever have a chance like that again.
In the SA game, Andrew Porter was going for dominance in every scrum, he may have been wrongly penalised, but should have adjusted his approach especially in the 8 v 7 scrum during a yellow card, that was their opportunity to take the lead and likely the win.
As I south African I love the way they play, in fact I consider that July 2022 kiwi Tri series the best June series I have ever watched purely on entertainment value alone. I hope they continue playingn that style. Even though I am a saffer I tread our style of rugby but it's effective for tournament rugby
Ireland's tour to South Africa in mid-2024 is going to be amazing. Only 2 tests, little sad it's not a 3 test series..... but already planning my entire life around this.
As an Irish fan I love the way we play now. It’s so fast ,the players are so skilful as for the World Cup quarter-final despite losing it was probably one of the best games I’ve ever seen and the fact Ireland didn’t go away they fought like hell the end they just ran out of energy and were up against a quality side really impressed me I wish we didn’t have to meet the all blacks in the QF though. Hopefully we don’t ever get a draw like this again and world rugby learns their bloody lesson.
haha spot on. As an Ireland fan to see what the Boks did in all those tight games was epic. Wil never be done again. True grit ( and loads of skill ). Was a great tight win that we had in the group game - but we were very lucky to take it. Something about this South African team that for me - transcends the game. Absolutely. A narrow loss to NZ shouldn't define this team. They also beat South Africa (the eventual winners) in this world cup. The quality of coaches coming into the Irish provinces now is insane
As a supporter of the AB's I salute Ireland and the way they play so it's a damned shame so many teams now opt for the defensive game rather than playing ball in hand, the RCW is held by a team that thrives on not having the ball

As an Ireland fan I'm very happy with how we play. Disappointed that we didn't make it a few matches further. But if we had made the final we would have had a winning run that had never been done before. Fair play to the All Blacks the only team to have beaten us in a year and a half.
We were the last team that beat Ireland before their 17 game win streak it was poetic that they beat Ireland in the quarters again but Ireland are in a good place and they will still be a force in world rugby
I am irish and feel the summary was ans is right on the money. Ireland play a terrific and entertaining game and can and do challenge the very best of teams. So could have would have and what ifs are part of both the winning and loosing. The quarter final was a really entertaining game , played by two of the most fluid and entertaining teams and ireland won everything but the game. Fair play to nz they needed to get everything right and did. So no shame at all in any of that. I feel nz mentality was an all or go home and ireland didn't quite get was it played full to win or as styled as a knock out game. We got caught at the end with too little time to correct and my god was the nz defence amazing. So hopefully the scrum rules get modified and we all spend less time around that part of the game.

I suppose if you hate something you are going to take every opportunity to twist the knife when you can. That's unfortunately the way human beings are in this anonymous world of social media comments. However, Ireland has only really been a very good team for about 5 years or so and in the previous world cups they weren't really expected to progress much beyond a quarter final stage anyway. This team could have won the whole thing and it took a very good performance from the ABs to beat them. In my heart I knew the ABs would be the team to end our winning run and there is no shame in losing to the Kiwis and you could see how much it meant to their players at the end of the match. We have good players coming through and a great system to develop them. I think we are only really starting out and will get better in the years and decades ahead.
You sometimes forget the good stuff, and as an Irish man and fan, your stats make great reading. Could not get tickets, so had the pleasure of going to bars and roaring at the telly with like minded individuals. The game has lifted, and even the after schools clubs are now seeing great attendances again. To lose some of our best through retirement is worrying, but the system is working and seeing greatness coming up the line. It's probably the best world cup I have ever seen, but the real issue is the refereeing and how certain individuals are bullying the best refs out of the game.
as a Springbok fan I'm sometimes envious of the way Ireland (& others like NZ) can play. High-paced, skillful attack combined with structured defense. I'm very happy for the Boks to do what they do well and stick to that.... but Ireland's rise over the last 5-10 yrs is no doubt good for the game, esp up north.

Can't see Andy Farrell doing that .Alot of great young players coming up and waiting in the wings so the future is very bright indeed for Irish Rugby despite some begrudgers, and nay sayers even on here , hi but then again , that's a sign of how far the boys in green have come and where there going . I’m Irish and while I absolutely agree with the point you’re making in the video, it’s still a little hard to see the bright side when we’ve walked away with nothing from the World Cup, again. Though that’s just me (well, my dad as well)

Ireland are a very good side, but they showed their inexperience earlier on when they put on a full strength team against Romania. They focused so much on their playing style and forgot the fundamentals. The set piece (the line-out and the scrum) was an issue throughout but they almost did it. I think the main difference between Ireland and the southern hemisphere giants is that intergenerational knowledge.
There is no doubt IRL has learned from other nations, and NZ in particular. Joe Schmidt had a lot to do with that. And, as you point out, the style is fast, attacking, and fluid. It gives opponents absolute yips. It's good to watch, and that's great for IRL and rugby more broadly. Was disappointed like every other fan that we lost again, but the manner in which we played in this WC, up to and including the QF, was such a pleasure. It was a great NZ performance in the QF , and whilenthe better team won, it was a very close thing.
From an Irish fan: Brilliant team to watch and they’ve been great. Only thing in the world cup this year is that in every game they were on the back foot for the first 20 minutes of every game. In terms of world cup tactics they should learn too that the world cup is a marathon, not a sprint. There are over 2 squads for a reason. Don’t just play the first team all the time. Never pick an injured player in a world cup knockout game against a team that is capable of beating you either. A part from that, great tactics on the pitch. Play other ways too in order to adapt the game as well
6 months ago I said I'd be happy I'd Ireland got into the last 4. I said the way rugby is heading and the talent Ireland have coming through and we have to get a better draw. Ireland will do better in 2027. The upcoming 6N will determine if I'm right!
Good stuff, I really think that having two tough games before with two less days off was the big difference in that tight quarter final, whether they could have beaten SA is another question but they were more likely to end the game with 15 players at least!
I think the All Blacks team that made the Final will always wonder 'what if we had kept 15 on the pitch'. The margins between the top teams now are so tight - the match results reflect that.

I think many teams will try and replicate Ireland, but will miss out a critical piece of the puzzle. Hugo Keenan is essential to how Ireland play rugby. He’s a traditional fullback, never makes mistakes, and allows Ireland to go 100% in attack without needing to think about what happens if there’s a turnover and the backfield is uncovered. Keenan is always there and always ready. And in attack, he’s the surprise option at the end of irelands moves. Every try he scores seems to come from nowhere, he’s again always in the right spot. Take him away and add a flashy fullback who wants to create and always run the ball, but leaves the defensive side of the ball worse off, and Ireland’s style won’t work.
Let's see how the team performs with Sexton gone. I believe there will be a real transition period as Andy Farrell and his coaching staff work to build a new team around Jack Crowley/Ross Byrne/Ciaran Frawley/Sam Prendergast in the 10 jersey. There has to be evolution in the game plan to negate predictability and to take advantage of what the new blood brings to the position.
You are so right Keenan is a big key to their game, but with the ball as well as his pace and decision making really stretch opponents. Another underrated player, and I argue their most important, is Tadgh Beirne. He's always popping up all over the field and makes many key turnovers and touches.

Irelands biggest mistake was mastering everything but the line outs, we just about beat South Africa when our line outs were brutally bad and we lost to New Zealand by losing lineouts and not capitalizing on them when we had our chances in their 22
Thanks Uggy Yes devastating that we lost and out of world cup, it was just one game lost in fairness , The press made us out to be cockey and boasting ,when team and staff never said one word.No one here either ,we were all taking it ine game at a time ,as we had the hardest group to win. It was soul destroying to see them out by such a small margin and on one loss, other teams we played against had one loss too yet were able to meet in the finals ! Yeah, as an Ireland fan it was bitterly disappointing to lose just when it really mattered especially in the context of never winning a QF. But I don't think we played badly against the All Blacks. We were just very slightly worse on the day...which sucks but still over the 4 years Ireland were incredible. And I think we can be even better in 4 years time with the talent coming through in the 4 provinces. I don't think we should change the playing style hugely but maybe tweak it slightly to make us even harder to beat

As an Irish fan it’s lovely reading all these comments from NZ and SA fans, I know a lot of Irish fans may have become unbearably arrogant prior to the World Cup but most of us couldn’t really believe that we had gotten to the point where we were actually favourites to win the tournament at one point - winning a World Cup in any major sport would stop the country for weeks and to get the respect from rugby nations like NZ and SA is an honour
It's the old story, particularly proven with soccer, lucky teams win cups, good teams win leagues. Leagues are won by playing consistently good over a long period, as seen by Ireland's stats. No sour grapes NZ beat us fair and square in that game. We knew the rules just like NZ. I do feel also the Ireland game was NZ World Cup Final . They had nothing left after that.
Excellent review . I don’t think we managed the competition right , although it was an awkward run in. We needed a squad as good and equal to the first 15 and we were not quite there yet , we were a bit flat by the time we faced the All Blacks and they were a bit fresher, not an excuse, but to beat the AB’s you have to be at 110% . We went from having the best line out in the top 6 to probably the worst in a couple of months . I am fairly iffy about the 6 Nations as a bit of transition going on now. But I think we will emerge stronger long term with a bigger better squad. 💚☘️

As a Connacht fan too - who's brand of rugby for years is ball in hand, its successful ( punch above our weight i think in Galway ) and so entertaining. Love 8 man, kicking battles too. But a fast attacking game with forwards offloading and line breaks is hard to beat. I have a feeling its trending towards this style - while watching the Champions Cup this season. Huge emphasis on attack in so many games, although that might not necessarily translate to the International game. South Africa get a bad rep - but I find them exhilarating to watch. With their amazing forwards and so much skill in the backs. Can only imagine Robertson will have the ABs playing lovely stuff. cant wait - but also - very scared. That's very generous of you, but as an Irishman I just don't see us improving or staying at that level, maybe the pain of losing the Qtrs again, (although that's irrelevant as we were there to win it all) is still haunting me, we literally had our golden generation playing at their peak (albeit line-outs were a disaster) but failed to deliver in the knock outs, they played poorly and lost by 4 but it felt like much more. Heck of a team though
I don’t think that Ireland are going to change the way they’re playing at the moment. The underage structure in Ireland, with all of the underage teams, right on up to the next bunch of lads that are just waiting to break into the National senior team, are all playing roughly the same way. And it’s all quite successful. Now they will have to tweak some things sometimes. There’s no doubt about that. But as for major radical seismic paradigm shifts in the way they play the game? No there’s going to be nothing like that happening.
This game has only really taken off since the 09 grandslam. Like GAA was nd will always be are number 1 sport. I always felt if we didn't have GAA we have a lot more players and would take it more serious. We're only catching up in the last 10 years.

Very complmentary presentation, Ireland is a small nation, with rugby being the 4th most popular sport, generally Irelands WC woes are due to 3 factors - lack of depth, injuries and a bad draw in the pools ( ie, big games just before the quarters) Being no. 1 for WC 23, should have guaranteed a favourable draw and run of games, i guess 'the curse' extends to World Rugby's poor management. If they had been drawn an easier team for pool game 4 and rested players, they would have been really 'up' for the NZ game.

This is not a shot at Ireland, but the idea that every team needs to play that way or even a specific or particular way is what will kill the sport. The reason why it's appealing to some is because it can be juxtaposed against a contrasting style. No body wants to watch the same thing over and over and again. Now as to wether or not it's effective, unfortunately the only metric that can be used to gage that is the world cup. And unfortunately for them they couldn't even exceed their previous best attempt ever. So going by that metric not even talking about winning the competition it was just not effective enough. Having said that they need to do what's suitable/comfortable for them and maybe one day it will bring them the desired success of a world championship. But for the most part people remember those that were victorious not those that looked good and were not victorious.

back in the old days when international travel was expensive & rare (& so was tv), countries wouild develop their unique styles through their domestic competition & then it was a fascinating clash during a test tour - which style would come out tops? & if one side lost they might take on elements of their opponents style & bring it back into their own domestic competition so progress went on
@RO-nr6up You can disagree, but the fact's of the matter remain the WC is the only platform where you get all of the strongest teams coming together to play each other for the title. The current champs literally played every other team in the top 6 to win it. It's not like Ireland didn't have 4 years to prepare for it. Also injuries happen to every other team and that's exactly why it's the best way of deciding who's the best. In fact this time out Ireland actually had negligibly the least amount of injury woes. NZ started off with some injury issues/South Africa had injury issues yet both teams made it to the final despite the adversity. If you need every advantage and no disadvantages to be called the best then you cannot be the best. I have no problems with Irelands style of play, they should do what suits them. But what I won't do is make a claim a specific style of play is the best style and then when it fails at the moment it counts the most try to use every excuse under the sun to validate it's lack of success. They had the platform to show the whole world it is the best style yet they couldn't exceed they previous best record. Keep making excuses if it suits you though.
During RWC Ireland kicked the ball 22.6 times per game. SA 25 times. Interesting the perspective of one team changing the game with ball in hand vs a traditional boring side like SA who are 'ruining the game' with kicks and scrums. England was top with 35.9 and NZ #2 with 30.7. That being said, great side who went on a great run

In 1999, the Boks won 17 games in a row. But they did not win the WC that year. But nobody remembers the Boks winning 17 in a row because they failed to win the WC. Ireland has lost two World Cups since 2019 and their 17 in a row does not matter. Ireland's 17 in a row will soon be forgotten.

For Irish rugby it is another huge milestone and achievement though. Winning their first Grand Slam. Beating the All Blacks for the first time. Winning a series in New Zealand. 17 games in a row. For teams that have been established as top teams since the start success is probably only measured in winning World Cups, for New Zealand and South Africa that is certainly the case, but for Ireland reaching a semi-final would have been considered a success because it would be another milestone. At this stage, passing the quarter, semi and winning a World Cup are the only three things left to try and achieve for Irish rugby, but they are entitled to be proud of milestones reached in their recent history.

@@SF-rw1oz okay that's a fair point but kicking for lineouts is only one setpiece in a whole arsenal of attacking rugby. You can do both. And these are only kicks that are kick able for points and only during knockouts. Nz and sa swear by it which is why they have the lions share of wc wins. I agree that with sexton now gone things will change but i think it will be for the better in terms of more delegation of leadership on the field. To rely on one person all the time is precarious to say the least. That's why the concept of Co captains is being explored more and more
@Natedawg38 Totally agree on the last point, I was pulling out my hair that we religiously selected Sexton at his age and with his injury record instead of blooding a Byrne or Crowley fully. We left all our eggs in a tattered 38 year old basket Imo the thing the AB and Boks do better than anyone else is blooding talent. In Ireland, it's panic stations if we don't win every 6N or win all our autumn tests. Why not spend the first 2 years of each cycle trying out all our youngsters and seeing what works with the last two years used for refining it all? I love POM but he along with anyone over 33 should be forced out of the squad now to make room for new blood to develop. As for the first point, yeah I agree. I just don't like the endless comments saying we should copy SA or NZ, which ignore the facts we don't develop the monsters SA do and the talent NZ do (although we're getting closer there).
Ireland style of rugby is definitely easy on the eye. They had an incredible team & were it a "normal" draw they would've probably broken their QF hoodoo too. I dislike this narrative of "the way the game should be played" BS. All the different styles is what makes our game so beautiful imo. They lost against stats. I called it after the SA game. Of they’d gone on to win the RWC they would have won 20 games in a row. This has never been done before. Their success was their downfall.

Watch what they do at the breakdown. I'm sorry but if they were reffed properly? That fast ball they thrive on, would end. For example their constant clearing out rucks from the side. In pretty much every turn over you show? They don't release tackler before jackel, don't enter the ruck correctly and slow ball down by not rolling. The first time, in a long time they got called regularly on this? Was v ABs at WC. I have never seen a team get away with so much nonsense at the breakdown. Also at set piece and specifically the scrum, Andrew Porter has getting away with scrummaging at 45 degree angle. It became so blatant in the 6Ns, his rear was pointed at the touch line. Again v ABs? He got pinged on it a bunch. Ireland benefitted from a system that stretched the laws as far as they could take them. You can see it everywhere, from "dummy runners" blocking defenders from making tackles (1st try v Scotland at WC classic example), badgering refs to being offside so much it gets ignored (v Boks their entire defensive line was offside so much I began to laugh). Their "style" of play is insidious and cynical. Not denying Ireland don't have good players or are a good team, however, theirs is not the style I want to see at all. I realise they are nowhere near the team Ireland are but if rugby is to survive? I want to see teams do what Portugal did at the WC. Fast, entertaining rugby without the cynicism or need to skirt laws to win.
I think their loss to NZ was more to do with the pressue and weight of history hanging over them with Ireland's QF curse than it was NZ being better than them. If they didn't have that QF pressure hanging over them, that forced them to make so many mistakes, they would have won that game
Both teams were under the same immense pressure. The Kiwis had the a very good game plan, something the irish hadn´t seen before, and they simply didn't have the answers.
This ball in hand is perhaps one of the silliest narratives out here. Rugby union is different from rugby league. If you fancy running rugby, good for you, go watch rugby league. Rugby union is about strategy. Ran it if you can or kick it or scrum it or mawl it. Isn't it exciting to have two teams trying to outdo each other on the basis of their strengths? You want all teams to play the running game because what...it excites you? I would like to see a perfectly weighted kick from 15 targeting a weak aerial player and maybe that player catching that kick and springing up a devastating counter...all these preplanned by both coaches. We can't have rugby failures running away with this absolutely silly running game narratives!
Rugby league tries are all the same and all scored from within the 20 metre line. Very rarely see length of the field tries and you will never see tries scored where half the team handle the ball. There's a reason rugby league is a minor world sport. It's for small minded people with small attention spans full of low skilled rugby players.
Lets be honest here, Rugby's most prestigious award is the Webb Ellis Trophy. Every team prepares over the 4-year cycle to compete for it at the World Cup. And winning it determines who the best teams are. Coaches make a big thing about peaking at the right time. Nienaber basically said he wanted the Boks to peak for the World Cup. Both Ireland and France peaked the 12 months leading into the World Cup, whereas NZ and the Boks... peaked at the later end of the Pool stages. No one cares about an Autumn series. Winning a 6 nations means nothing anymore as England, Wales and Scotland are not even at the races (never mind Italy) The two best in the World are the Springboks and the All Blacks who have dominated the World Cup with 7 out of 10 between them.
So you think the best team is judged by a knockout tournament every four years? Ireland beat South Africa at the last world cup. And lets not even talk about the draw which allowed a team like England go further than Ireland or France.

France and Ireland won when it didn't really matter. SA was always focused on winning the WC. That was their priority and they used other matches to experiment. Ireland and France played well and were consistent but SA and NZ knew exactly what to expect, NH showed all their cards. Ireland without its imported players would have been half the team: Aki, Lowe, Gibson Park were all absolutely central to their success. NH teams will just need to keeping extracting SH talent it seems 😂 But this all sounds like coping man come on. The beauty is in the different strategies. NZ and SA play different games and they are both successful that's what makes it so exciting.
No one EXTRACTED anything from the SH. Aki, Lowe, Gibson-Parke were never going to get the chance to play in the Black Jersey (according to several NZ sources) - deemed 'not good enough'/'surplus to requirement'. So the 3 of them LEFT NZ to pursue opportunities abroad. A couple of the NZ rugby pundits have pointed out before this WC, that these 3 players only DEVELOPED their game by playing in Ireland - that's not a positive reflection on the people in NZ who made the original judgement calls on those players abilities. We have had Joe Schmidt and Michael Cheika and Warren Gatland and David Nucifora lay the foundations, build and develop the game here in Ireland - were they EXTRACTED too? Or maybe its just that the game has developed beyond parochialism.

My prediction was that Ireland wouldn’t have the ‘legs’ to get to the final and I was proved right. There were some stats that showed they hadn’t rotated players enough, so in the QF the starting team had played more minutes than other teams by a long shot. I think this comes down to the lack of depth. (Eg, They we’re never going to win big games without Sexton or Aki). Now compare that with SA who won a final with a replacement hooker in his late 30s who played over 70 mins. OR, if you can allow yourselves, compare it with Borthwicks management of England. He rotated players because he had depth and nerves of steel. For example, he played Marcus Smith at 15 in a knockout game with Fiji who had beaten England at Twickenham 2 months previously.
If you listen to most Irish pundits, they reckon that rotation was not a huge factor in their QF exit, even when the stats prove otherwise. The level of delusion and denial is astonishing.
Their top 23 was probably the best at the rwc, but lacked depth of SA and France. They were always going to fade in the attritional nature of the tournament
If Ireland could pick them up even younger like the New Zealand outfit do from the Islands, instead of having to improve older ones not considered in their own country, we would be unstoppable.

People forget Ireland were the worst team in the five nations for near 100 years and were the worst by quite a distance . The all blacks the most dominant test team in history went 5 world cups editions before winning a second one. People expect them to progress to World Cup contenders too early .

Bear this in mind - there are numerous reasons why Ireland have improved so much. The number 1 reason (imo) was the decision to model our game based on how New Zealand play through all age levels. Without that foundation we would not have reached this level.
As an Englishman married to an Irish woman i have seen this dominance up close and i was probably more gutted by there defeat to New Zealand. Few teams will be able to replicate this style and it should keep Ireland close until the next tournament where hopefully they'll go further.

Our set piece imploded after the Grand Slam win. Im not sure why. It went from being our strength to our biggest weakness. And it wasnt just in the world cup, it was misfiring throughout all our warm up games too. The only game where we seemed to get it right was the pool game against Scotland. It cost us the game against the All Blacks and made the South African game too close for comfort.
I think we have some excellent young players coming though, we're nut just dominating at senior level in Europe, our under 20s have won successive grand slams too. And I think that Jack Crowley and Ciaran Frawley will more than cover the hole that Sexton has left. But the 2023 World Cup was one we let get away, and you have to wonder if we'll ever have a chance like that again.

In the SA game, Andrew Porter was going for dominance in every scrum, he may have been wrongly penalised, but should have adjusted his approach especially in the 8 v 7 scrum during a yellow card, that was their opportunity to take the lead and likely the win.
As I south African I love the way they play, in fact I consider that July 2022 kiwi Tri series the best June series I have ever watched purely on entertainment value alone. I hope they continue playingn that style. Even though I am a saffer I tread our style of rugby but it's effective for tournament rugby

As an Irish fan I love the way we play now. It’s so fast ,the players are so skilful as for the World Cup quarter-final despite losing it was probably one of the best games I’ve ever seen and the fact Ireland didn’t go away they fought like hell the end they just ran out of energy and were up against a quality side really impressed me I wish we didn’t have to meet the all blacks in the QF though. Hopefully we don’t ever get a draw like this again and world rugby learns their bloody lesson.

As an Ireland fan I'm very happy with how we play. Disappointed that we didn't make it a few matches further. But if we had made the final we would have had a winning run that had never been done before. Fair play to the All Blacks the only team to have beaten us in a year and a half.

I am irish and feel the summary was ans is right on the money. Ireland play a terrific and entertaining game and can and do challenge the very best of teams. So could have would have and what ifs are part of both the winning and loosing. The quarter final was a really entertaining game , played by two of the most fluid and entertaining teams and ireland won everything but the game. Fair play to nz they needed to get everything right and did. So no shame at all in any of that. I feel nz mentality was an all or go home and ireland didn't quite get was it played full to win or as styled as a knock out game. We got caught at the end with too little time to correct and my god was the nz defence amazing. So hopefully the scrum rules get modified and we all spend less time around that part of the game.

I suppose if you hate something you are going to take every opportunity to twist the knife when you can. That's unfortunately the way human beings are in this anonymous world of social media comments. However, Ireland has only really been a very good team for about 5 years or so and in the previous world cups they weren't really expected to progress much beyond a quarter final stage anyway. This team could have won the whole thing and it took a very good performance from the ABs to beat them. In my heart I knew the ABs would be the team to end our winning run and there is no shame in losing to the Kiwis and you could see how much it meant to their players at the end of the match. We have good players coming through and a great system to develop them. I think we are only really starting out and will get better in the years and decades ahead.
You sometimes forget the good stuff, and as an Irish man and fan, your stats make great reading. Could not get tickets, so had the pleasure of going to bars and roaring at the telly with like minded individuals. The game has lifted, and even the after schools clubs are now seeing great attendances again.
To lose some of our best through retirement is worrying, but the system is working and seeing greatness coming up the line.
It's probably the best world cup I have ever seen, but the real issue is the refereeing and how certain individuals are bullying the best refs out of the game.

I’m Irish and while I absolutely agree with the point you’re making in the video, it’s still a little hard to see the bright side when we’ve walked away with nothing from the World Cup, again. Though that’s just me (well, my dad as well)

Ireland are a very good side, but they showed their inexperience earlier on when they put on a full strength team against Romania. They focused so much on their playing style and forgot the fundamentals. The set piece (the line-out and the scrum) was an issue throughout but they almost did it. I think the main difference between Ireland and the southern hemisphere giants is that intergenerational knowledge.
There is no doubt IRL has learned from other nations, and NZ in particular. Joe Schmidt had a lot to do with that. And, as you point out, the style is fast, attacking, and fluid. It gives opponents absolute yips. It's good to watch, and that's great for IRL and rugby more broadly. Was disappointed like every other fan that we lost again, but the manner in which we played in this WC, up to and including the QF, was such a pleasure. It was a great NZ performance in the QF , and whilenthe better team won, it was a very close thing.
From an Irish fan: Brilliant team to watch and they’ve been great. Only thing in the world cup this year is that in every game they were on the back foot for the first 20 minutes of every game. In terms of world cup tactics they should learn too that the world cup is a marathon, not a sprint. There are over 2 squads for a reason. Don’t just play the first team all the time. Never pick an injured player in a world cup knockout game against a team that is capable of beating you either. A part from that, great tactics on the pitch. Play other ways too in order to adapt the game as well
6 months ago I said I'd be happy I'd Ireland got into the last 4. I said the way rugby is heading and the talent Ireland have coming through and we have to get a better draw. Ireland will do better in 2027.

Good stuff, I really think that having two tough games before with two less days off was the big difference in that tight quarter final, whether they could have beaten SA is another question but they were more likely to end the game with 15 players at least!
I think the All Blacks team that made the Final will always wonder 'what if we had kept 15 on the pitch'. The margins between the top teams now are so tight - the match results reflect that.

I think many teams will try and replicate Ireland, but will miss out a critical piece of the puzzle. Hugo Keenan is essential to how Ireland play rugby. He’s a traditional fullback, never makes mistakes, and allows Ireland to go 100% in attack without needing to think about what happens if there’s a turnover and the backfield is uncovered. Keenan is always there and always ready. And in attack, he’s the surprise option at the end of irelands moves. Every try he scores seems to come from nowhere, he’s again always in the right spot. Take him away and add a flashy fullback who wants to create and always run the ball, but leaves the defensive side of the ball worse off, and Ireland’s style won’t work.

Let's see how the team performs with Sexton gone. I believe there will be a real transition period as Andy Farrell and his coaching staff work to build a new team around Jack Crowley/Ross Byrne/Ciaran Frawley/Sam Prendergast in the 10 jersey. There has to be evolution in the game plan to negate predictability and to take advantage of what the new blood brings to the position.
You are so right Keenan is a big key to their game, but with the ball as well as his pace and decision making really stretch opponents.
Another underrated player, and I argue their most important, is Tadgh Beirne. He's always popping up all over the field and makes many key turnovers and touches.

Irelands biggest mistake was mastering everything but the line outs, we just about beat South Africa when our line outs were brutally bad and we lost to New Zealand by losing lineouts and not capitalizing on them when we had our chances in their 22

Yes devastating that we lost and out of world cup, it was just one game lost in fairness , The press made us out to be cockey and boasting ,when team and staff never said one word.No one here either ,we were all taking it ine game at a time ,as we had the hardest group to win.

Yeah, as an Ireland fan it was bitterly disappointing to lose just when it really mattered especially in the context of never winning a QF. But I don't think we played badly against the All Blacks. We were just very slightly worse on the day...which sucks but still over the 4 years Ireland were incredible. And I think we can be even better in 4 years time with the talent coming through in the 4 provinces.
I don't think we should change the playing style hugely but maybe tweak it slightly to make us even harder to beat

As an NRL fan, it sounds like they played Rugby's version of the Penrith system. High speed, high fitness, everyone in motion in attack and defence.
As an Irish fan it’s lovely reading all these comments from NZ and SA fans, I know a lot of Irish fans may have become unbearably arrogant prior to the World Cup but most of us couldn’t really believe that we had gotten to the point where we were actually favourites to win the tournament at one point - winning a World Cup in any major sport would stop the country for weeks and to get the respect from rugby nations like NZ and SA is an honour
It's the old story, particularly proven with soccer, lucky teams win cups, good teams win leagues. Leagues are won by playing consistently good over a long period, as seen by Ireland's stats. No sour grapes NZ beat us fair and square in that game. We knew the rules just like NZ. I do feel also the Ireland game was NZ World Cup Final . They had nothing left after that.

I don’t think we managed the competition right , although it was an awkward run in.
We needed a squad as good and equal to the first 15 and we were not quite there yet , we were a bit flat by the time we faced the All Blacks and they were a bit fresher, not an excuse, but to beat the AB’s you have to be at 110% . We went from having the best line out in the top 6 to probably the worst in a couple of months . I am fairly iffy about the 6 Nations as a bit of transition going on now. But I think we will emerge stronger long term with a bigger better squad. 💚☘️

As a Connacht fan too - who's brand of rugby for years is ball in hand, its successful ( punch above our weight i think in Galway ) and so entertaining. Love 8 man, kicking battles too. But a fast attacking game with forwards offloading and line breaks is hard to beat. I have a feeling its trending towards this style - while watching the Champions Cup this season. Huge emphasis on attack in so many games, although that might not necessarily translate to the International game. South Africa get a bad rep - but I find them exhilarating to watch. With their amazing forwards and so much skill in the backs. Can only imagine Robertson will have the ABs playing lovely stuff. cant wait - but also - very scared. International rugby is in a good place

TBH, I believe that Sexton will be an inspiration for our number 10's going forward. Richie McCaw would be a good example of that.
That's very generous of you, but as an Irishman I just don't see us improving or staying at that level, maybe the pain of losing the Qtrs again, (although that's irrelevant as we were there to win it all) is still haunting me, we literally had our golden generation playing at their peak (albeit line-outs were a disaster) but failed to deliver in the knock outs, they played poorly and lost by 4 but it felt like much more. Heck of a team though

I don’t think that Ireland are going to change the way they’re playing at the moment. The underage structure in Ireland, with all of the underage teams, right on up to the next bunch of lads that are just waiting to break into the National senior team, are all playing roughly the same way. And it’s all quite successful. Now they will have to tweak some things sometimes. There’s no doubt about that. But as for major radical seismic paradigm shifts in the way they play the game? No there’s going to be nothing like that happening.
This game has only really taken off since the 09 grandslam. Like GAA was nd will always be are number 1 sport. I always felt if we didn't have GAA we have a lot more players and would take it more serious. We're only catching up in the last 10 years.

Very complmentary presentation, Ireland is a small nation, with rugby being the 4th most popular sport, generally Irelands WC woes are due to 3 factors - lack of depth, injuries and a bad draw in the pools ( ie, big games just before the quarters) Being no. 1 for WC 23, should have guaranteed a favourable draw and run of games, i guess 'the curse' extends to World Rugby's poor management. If they had been drawn an easier team for pool game 4 and rested players, they would have been really 'up' for the NZ game.

This is not a shot at Ireland, but the idea that every team needs to play that way or even a specific or particular way is what will kill the sport. The reason why it's appealing to some is because it can be juxtaposed against a contrasting style. No body wants to watch the same thing over and over and again. Now as to wether or not it's effective, unfortunately the only metric that can be used to gage that is the world cup. And unfortunately for them they couldn't even exceed their previous best attempt ever. So going by that metric not even talking about winning the competition it was just not effective enough. Having said that they need to do what's suitable/comfortable for them and maybe one day it will bring them the desired success of a world championship. But for the most part people remember those that were victorious not those that looked good and were not victorious.

back in the old days when international travel was expensive & rare (& so was tv), countries wouild develop their unique styles through their domestic competition & then it was a fascinating clash during a test tour - which style would come out tops? & if one side lost they might take on elements of their opponents style & bring it back into their own domestic competition so progress went on
@RO-nr6up You can disagree, but the fact's of the matter remain the WC is the only platform where you get all of the strongest teams coming together to play each other for the title. The current champs literally played every other team in the top 6 to win it. It's not like Ireland didn't have 4 years to prepare for it.
Also injuries happen to every other team and that's exactly why it's the best way of deciding who's the best. In fact this time out Ireland actually had negligibly the least amount of injury woes. NZ started off with some injury issues/South Africa had injury issues yet both teams made it to the final despite the adversity. If you need every advantage and no disadvantages to be called the best then you cannot be the best.
I have no problems with Irelands style of play, they should do what suits them. But what I won't do is make a claim a specific style of play is the best style and then when it fails at the moment it counts the most try to use every excuse under the sun to validate it's lack of success. They had the platform to show the whole world it is the best style yet they couldn't exceed they previous best record. Keep making excuses if it suits you though.

I think that all the other teams learned Irelands amazing style of rugby and the All Blacks learned how to find a way to nullify it.
During RWC Ireland kicked the ball 22.6 times per game. SA 25 times. Interesting the perspective of one team changing the game with ball in hand vs a traditional boring side like SA who are 'ruining the game' with kicks and scrums. England was top with 35.9 and NZ #2 with 30.7. That being said, great side who went on a great run

In 1999, the Boks won 17 games in a row. But they did not win the WC that year. But nobody remembers the Boks winning 17 in a row because they failed to win the WC. Ireland has lost two World Cups since 2019 and their 17 in a row does not matter. Ireland's 17 in a row will soon be forgotten.

For teams that have been established as top teams since the start success is probably only measured in winning World Cups, for New Zealand and South Africa that is certainly the case, but for Ireland reaching a semi-final would have been considered a success because it would be another milestone. At this stage, passing the quarter, semi and winning a World Cup are the only three things left to try and achieve for Irish rugby, but they are entitled to be proud of milestones reached in their recent history.

The team was built on an ability to convert points once we got into the 22. We very rarely left without scoring something. To revert to taking penalties instead of backing ourselves would be changing the style

I agree that with sexton now gone things will change but i think it will be for the better in terms of more delegation of leadership on the field. To rely on one person all the time is precarious to say the least. That's why the concept of Co captains is being explored more and more

They lost against stats. I called it after the SA game. Of they’d gone on to win the RWC they would have won 20 games in a row. This has never been done before. Their success was their downfall.

Watch what they do at the breakdown. I'm sorry but if they were reffed properly? That fast ball they thrive on, would end. For example their constant clearing out rucks from the side.
In pretty much every turn over you show? They don't release tackler before jackel, don't enter the ruck correctly and slow ball down by not rolling. The first time, in a long time they got called regularly on this? Was v ABs at WC. I have never seen a team get away with so much nonsense at the breakdown.
Also at set piece and specifically the scrum, Andrew Porter has getting away with scrummaging at 45 degree angle. It became so blatant in the 6Ns, his rear was pointed at the touch line. Again v ABs? He got pinged on it a bunch.
Ireland benefitted from a system that stretched the laws as far as they could take them. You can see it everywhere, from "dummy runners" blocking defenders from making tackles (1st try v Scotland at WC classic example), badgering refs to being offside so much it gets ignored (v Boks their entire defensive line was offside so much I began to laugh).
Their "style" of play is insidious and cynical. Not denying Ireland don't have good players or are a good team, however, theirs is not the style I want to see at all.
I realise they are nowhere near the team Ireland are but if rugby is to survive? I want to see teams do what Portugal did at the WC. Fast, entertaining rugby without the cynicism or need to skirt laws to win.
I think their loss to NZ was more to do with the pressue and weight of history hanging over them with Ireland's QF curse than it was NZ being better than them. If they didn't have that QF pressure hanging over them, that forced them to make so many mistakes, they would have won that game
Both teams were under the same immense pressure. The Kiwis had the a very good game plan, something the irish hadn´t seen before, and they simply didn't have the answers.

This ball in hand is perhaps one of the silliest narratives out here. Rugby union is different from rugby league. If you fancy running rugby, good for you, go watch rugby league. Rugby union is about strategy. Ran it if you can or kick it or scrum it or mawl it. Isn't it exciting to have two teams trying to outdo each other on the basis of their strengths? You want all teams to play the running game because what...it excites you? I would like to see a perfectly weighted kick from 15 targeting a weak aerial player and maybe that player catching that kick and springing up a devastating counter...all these preplanned by both coaches. We can't have rugby failures running away with this absolutely silly running game narratives!
Rugby league tries are all the same and all scored from within the 20 metre line. Very rarely see length of the field tries and you will never see tries scored where half the team handle the ball. There's a reason rugby league is a minor world sport. It's for small minded people with small attention spans full of low skilled rugby players.
Lets be honest here, Rugby's most prestigious award is the Webb Ellis Trophy. Every team prepares over the 4-year cycle to compete for it at the World Cup. And winning it determines who the best teams are.
Coaches make a big thing about peaking at the right time. Nienaber basically said he wanted the Boks to peak for the World Cup. Both Ireland and France peaked the 12 months leading into the World Cup, whereas NZ and the Boks... peaked at the later end of the Pool stages.
No one cares about an Autumn series. Winning a 6 nations means nothing anymore as England, Wales and Scotland are not even at the races (never mind Italy)
The two best in the World are the Springboks and the All Blacks who have dominated the World Cup with 7 out of 10 between them.

France and Ireland won when it didn't really matter. SA was always focused on winning the WC. That was their priority and they used other matches to experiment. Ireland and France played well and were consistent but SA and NZ knew exactly what to expect, NH showed all their cards. Ireland without its imported players would have been half the team: Aki, Lowe, Gibson Park were all absolutely central to their success. NH teams will just need to keeping extracting SH talent it seems 😂
But this all sounds like coping man come on. The beauty is in the different strategies. NZ and SA play different games and they are both successful that's what makes it so exciting.
No one EXTRACTED anything from the SH. Aki, Lowe, Gibson-Parke were never going to get the chance to play in the Black Jersey (according to several NZ sources) - deemed 'not good enough'/'surplus to requirement'. So the 3 of them LEFT NZ to pursue opportunities abroad. A couple of the NZ rugby pundits have pointed out before this WC, that these 3 players only DEVELOPED their game by playing in Ireland - that's not a positive reflection on the people in NZ who made the original judgement calls on those players abilities. We have had Joe Schmidt and Michael Cheika and Warren Gatland and David Nucifora lay the foundations, build and develop the game here in Ireland - were they EXTRACTED too? Or maybe its just that the game has developed beyond parochialism.

My prediction was that Ireland wouldn’t have the ‘legs’ to get to the final and I was proved right. There were some stats that showed they hadn’t rotated players enough, so in the QF the starting team had played more minutes than other teams by a long shot. I think this comes down to the lack of depth. (Eg, They we’re never going to win big games without Sexton or Aki). Now compare that with SA who won a final with a replacement hooker in his late 30s who played over 70 mins.
OR, if you can allow yourselves, compare it with Borthwicks management of England. He rotated players because he had depth and nerves of steel. For example, he played Marcus Smith at 15 in a knockout game with Fiji who had beaten England at Twickenham 2 months previously.
England wouldn't have made it out of Irelands pool let alone a semi final. Borthwick is a shit manager they just had a very easy run.
