  • Hey everyone and happy new year!
    I was meant to record Departures instead but I felt a bit of FOMO seeing everyone else upload their cover of Animenz's arrangement of Kick Back 😅. Also, no blazer this time since it's too hot in Australia. Instead, you get a very wrinkled shirt haha
    Departures should be uploaded in a week or two though!
    Initially, I didn't think I would enjoy this piece as I prefer more ballade-like music but it slowly became an earworm after listening to it a few times, especially 2:43 for some reason.
    The piece itself is pretty straightforward to learn for the most part since it's just octaves. However, getting used to playing legato with your right hand while accenting the bass' staccato is quite challenging to get used to. By far the hardest part in the whole arrangement was 2:09 - those tremolos are really hard and tire your hands very quickly when you're trying to find the proper technique to play them. I realised that you have to play the bottom chord with fingers 1, 2, and 3 (rather than 4) while the top A is played with finger 5. Then, you have to stiffen your fingers so they don't bend, and use your wrist to help your fingers switch between the chord and note.
    I didn't want to damage the piano with my fists so I went a bit light at 2:11. It looks a bit funny compared to Animenz's but sounds alright.
    I hope you enjoy this cover of KICK BACK! I've seen many other people upload their interpretations already so maybe the ship has sailed
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
    The next upload will be Departures for sure =)
    Btw, that base at 3:16 is amazing

    I misstook this for an actual animenzz video at first. Great quality stuff here, amazing performance!

      Thanks! Maybe a change of clothing would make it look less animenz?

      @@CharlesMaPiano I think it’s mostly due to the setup. But don’t sweat it, maybe it’s a good thing. In terms of performance I certainly wasn’t disappointed at least and upon closer look there are plenty of unique elements.

    Your playing is just so full of character and attitude, and you've made your arrangement sound very interesting. Impeccable playing too and this sounds flawless! This was played with great excellence!

    Great performance as always! I like how you kept the fist slamming on the piano at 2:11 :D
    I don't know if it's the recording, the piano or just me, but your playing feels a little mellow in comparison to other interpretations. I myself would have preferred a tad more energy here and there (although that's just my opinion).
    You absolutely nailed the tremolo at 2:09!
    Overall a very good take on this arrangement, I think you managed to carry the momentum of the song well :)
    Love seeing your videos!

      Glad to see your comments again! I started watching Chainsaw Man after uploading this and yeah, I should've been more aggressive with the playing :/
      Most of my practice was actually perfecting the tremolo at 2:09 haha. Sometimes, I felt like giving up since it seemed impossible to play. It's so hard to play well and the arpeggio afterward doesn't make it any better...

    An advice for the beginning part try to hold a little bit more the notes and maybe just a tiny bit of pedaling

    I feel that the sound of the piano is a bit muffled, I wonder if you didn’t play it hard enough😂

    • @CharlesMaPiano
      @CharlesMaPiano  Год назад

      lol yeah, I don't really know what happened since it sounded fine in real life. I'm gonna ask someone to help me set up the mics to see if that helps cos they suck with loud songs at the moment. Try listening to it with headphones, it sounds fine to me when I use them =D
      EDIT: I think it's also cos I turned normalise on in Logic... rip

    • @Erainia
      @Erainia Год назад +2

      @@CharlesMaPiano It sounds like the mic positioning just needs changing more than anything. What kind of mics are you using?
      Also note that not every piano reacts the same way to mics, some need different mic positions to others to get the right sound, even compared to a piano of the same size. I recommend a XY at the side of the piano as a benchmark.
      In this case it sounds like you're not getting enough treble presence, hence the muddy muffled sound, so maybe direct your treble mic differently.
      It could also be since with these larger Faziolis, as you well know, they have a very strong, loud bass, that can actually be a bit too much for standard mic setups and produce this sort of tonality, I had the same problems when recording Bosendorfer 290s, in the end I ended up doing a 4 mic setup, with 2 condensers close mic'd practically on the strings, and 2 side ribbon mics at a 30-70 percent ratio.
      Hope this helps :)
      PS: I dont think normalising it should make too many issues.

      @@Erainia Thank you so much for the tips! I currently use a pair of Neumann KM184's in AB setup. They mainly point at the bass and mids since I found the treble to be a bit too loud. I want to borrow 2 more mics to see what 4 mics soundlike for the next video =) Then I think I will be able to capture the whole piano more accurately

    • @Erainia
      @Erainia Год назад +1

      @@CharlesMaPiano I think the lack of treble capturing might be the culprit here in this scenario, those pencil condensers really LOVE a nice direct sound, if the treble is a bit too much you can always bring it down, but its VERY difficult to add back in if you lose it.
      Do you have any other videos where you use the AB with the treble mic pointed higher?

    • @CharlesMaPiano
      @CharlesMaPiano  Год назад +1

      @@Erainia I don't think there are many videos where I used that position, perhaps my cover of "I finally knew" was like that since the treble sounds louder?

    Бро, очень круто, но походу мало практиковался?🤭 Скорость немного медленнее чем у Анименза, но в основном все сыграно идеально!
    Звук кстати немного заглушен или что-то такого рода

    • @CharlesMaPiano
      @CharlesMaPiano  Год назад +1

      It sounds a bit slower than Animenz's version but I played it in ~3:15 so 5 seconds longer than the original if you cut out the bits at the start and end. Initially, I played it faster than Animenz haha so I may have over-compensated a bit
      I think it's muffled since my mics aren't very good with bass and mids which is what this piece mainly consists of. Try listening to it with headphones if you haven't, it sounds pretty good with my generic Apple chorded headphones

      @twofoldd Год назад +1

      @@twofoldd Haha, no problems. The bpm is very high still so it's hard to get used to
